Earthquakes and/or Volcanoes
Are our Hawaiian members all safe?
Earthquakes and/or Volcanoes

Don’t worry about the lava. But watch out for the hair of a goddess.
That was the message from U.S. government officials minutes after the world’s largest active volcano, Mauna Loa, erupted for the first time in nearly four decades.
The spewing lava did not threaten homes, they said — but there could be a risk as lava bubbles explode, sending delicate, golden strands of molten lava resembling human hair blowing downwind.
The phenomenon known as Pele’s hair is named after Pelehonuamea, the Hawaiian goddess of volcanoes and fire, who reputedly has the power to create through destruction.

2 new lava flows cascade down Mauna Loa as Hawaii sees neighboring volcanoes erupting

Mauna Loa’s eruption led Hawaii Gov. David Ige to sign an emergency proclamation Tuesday. This allows the state’s director and administrator of emergency management to handle actions such as issuing alerts and warnings as well as facilitating mandatory evacuations where necessary.
At just 21 miles apart, Mauna Loa and Kilauea have not erupted together since 1984, when Mauna Loa last erupted.
Neither volcano is threatening homes or nearby infrastructure, the national park said. But state health officials warned air quality could be worsened by hazards such as vog, or volcanic smog.
The rare dual-eruption event is expected to attract an influx of visitors eager to see the molten flows, the national park said in a Facebook post.

The eruptions are amazing to see. I saw 3. One time, we drove to a Kilauea flow that created a new black sand beach. A park ranger told us how to get around the barriers to reach the new beach. We walked across the flow, not hot on top, but warm . We enjoyed standing the new sparkling black sand and watching a smaller flow maybe 3 yards away. We weren't the only (crazy) people there. It was beautiful and hypnotic. Everyone was smiling. Some people brought gifts for Pele. We were all blissed out. Like seeing the creation of earth. I brought home some black sand and a chunk of lava that a park ranger gave me.
Returning home, we saw that more of the only road through town was being covered by a lava flow. We paused a little while to watch the lava slowly moving down the road. It was a few feet high. Heading out again, we saw men trying to move the first church of Father Damien. They got it on a truck bed, but it broke in half (age, rot, termites). We stopped again to watch and chat with the park rangers and truckers until the church was moved to a safe place.
One of the best days in my life. If you have a chance to watch a volcano eruption, do it. It's like watching earth being created. (But stay away from the explosive ones.)

Here's the downside. People have built homes on the side of an active volcano. some are very simple and rustic, but some (too many) have built regular homes with inside dining room, bedrooms and bathroom and lovely gardens. Government & insurance companies are tired of these neighborhoods going up in flames and/or covered by lava. Obviously, housing is cheaper in those areas, so people keep moving there anyway.

New Mauna Loa Eruption Reopens A Costly Old Issue: Why Is Building Allowed In Risky Lava Zones?
Hawaii County hasn’t finished buying out property owners after the 2018 lava flow that devastated Leilani and Kapoho, and here comes another potential disaster.
Sunday marked the first time Mauna Loa volcano has erupted since 1984, but county officials are once again facing a situation where lava could threaten housing that has sprung up over the years in what is known as Lava Zone 1. Those are the riskiest areas that are smack on the volcanic rift zones.
There has been talk of banning development in the highest-risk lava zones in the past, but that talk never translated into much action. People still buy and sell land in the riskiest areas, and land owners can still obtain county building permits to construct homes there.

What an amazing experience! I've never seen a lava flow, but experienced an active volcanic eruption and several feet of ash in an eruption in southern Chile. Amazing power of Mother Nature. Glaciers too.Lani wrote: ↑Wed Nov 30, 2022 1:59 am The eruptions are amazing to see. I saw 3. One time, we drove to a Kilauea flow that created a new black sand beach. I've seen it live in Costa Rica at Arenal Volcano and at Kilauea by helicopter. It is truly awesome. Pretty cool just seeing them smoke, which I've done at quite a few places.

I want to see a lava fountain like the one during the Kīlauea Iki eruption of 1959 that reached a height of nearly 2,000 feet...
Not sure if this is the tallest fountain of the eruption, but it is very tall.

At the risk of going slightly OT, when I visited the Big Island back in 2008 or thereabouts, I took this tour to the top of adjacent Mauna Kea where all the observatories are. I can't tell you how very, very cool that was. They pick you up at designated spots and drive you through the road between MK and ML (the saddle I think it's called) where the rental companies won't let you take their rental cars (IIRC, the road's a bit rough). Drive you up to the base top and see the observatories and the magnificent views and watch the sun set. Magnificent views, worth it for just that, but after the sun goes down they take you to a lower elevation and don fur parkas and gloves (you'll need them) and they have their favorite spot with no light pollution and bring out the telescopes and watch the stars. Just amazing, worth every penny. Long drive back in the dark and interesting - there must be some military presence in the Saddle - gunfire was going off like crazy.

The military trains in the Saddle Road area. I used to drive on Saddle Road as the quicker way to Hilo despite the dangers such as rough pavement, no pavement, and steep hills. Sometimes I'd reach the top of a hill and see the military having a mock battle. That area is barren, just dirt and rocks. It feels like being on another planet or in a deadly desert.

We went up in March and had to be rushed out because it started to snow.

Thanks Lani. It was so dark when we came back from the Kona side, all I can remember is the gunfire. Was dozing a lot, and have to say still so damn cold I didn't take off the parka and gloves until the tour was over. It's about 2 days from cutting off the highway. No houses in that area, however.

Residents are evacuating as Mount Semeru, Indonesia's highest volcano, has erupted

Indonesia's highest volcano on its most densely populated island released searing gas clouds and rivers of lava Sunday in its latest eruption.
Monsoon rains eroded and finally collapsed the lava dome atop 3,676-meter (12,060-foot) Mount Semeru, causing the eruption, according to National Disaster Management Agency spokesperson Abdul Muhari.
Several villages were blanketed with falling ash, blocking out the sun, but no casualties have been reported. Several hundred residents, their faces smeared with volcanic dust and rain, fled to temporary shelters or left for other safe areas.
Thick columns of ash were blasted more than 1,500 meters (nearly 5,000 feet) into the sky while searing gas and lava flowed down Semeru's slopes toward a nearby river.

About two weeks after Earth’s largest active volcano began erupting, Mauna Loa has gone quiet. So, too, has Kilauea, its smaller neighbor on Hawaii’s Big Island, which had been erupting almost constantly for more than a year.
“We feel pretty confident this eruption has, in fact, paused and is probably over,” Ken Hon, scientist in charge of the U.S. Geological Survey’s Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, said Tuesday in reference to Mauna Loa.
But volcanologists don’t know whether there is a link between the end of the two eruptions, something that highlights the larger challenges the scientists face in analyzing and predicting volcanic activity. Mauna Loa is among the best understood and most closely watched volcanoes in the world because of its record of activity, with 34 eruptions since 1843, and yet significant questions remain about the factors influencing when it erupts and when it quiets.

Earthquakes - Humboldt Co CA 6.4
This just in from CNN - Mag 6.4 in Northern CA early this morning.
The quake, striking at 2:34 a.m. PT, was centered in the Pacific just off the coast, about 7.5 miles from the Humboldt County city of Ferndale, the survey said. That’s about a 20-mile drive southwest of Eureka and a 280-mile drive northwest of Sacramento.

Ferndale is a neat little community. Access from the north off US101 is only via highway 211 across a bridge that spans the Eel River. The bridge is old and narrow. Access from the east/south at Rio Dell is much longer and serpentine because of the aforementioned Eel River. The bridge is now closed. Ingress and egress just got a lot longer.
Much of downtown Ferndale is comprised of Victorian homes and street facades. It could be described as quaint.

Once upon a time in the early 60s, the state wanted to open up the "Lost Coast." This area is roughly from north of Fort Bragg along the Mendocino Coast to Ferndale and eventually US101. This area is the last true wilderness near sea level in the state. There were plans to forge a highway that would make this area accessible by auto. Because of unstable geography, mountains, and narrow/steep canyons, the highway was never fully engineered, let alone built. Curiously, Section 511 of the California Streets and Highways Code is still on the books with a simple sentence, "Route 211 from Route 1 near Rockport to Route 101 near Fernbridge." Fernbridge is on the north side of the Eel River. Yeah, I know confusing as heck.

(Reuters) -A 5.4-magnitude earthquake struck 15 km (9.3 miles) southeast of California's Rio Dell region, an area still recovering from a powerful earthquake last month.
The latest earthquake was at a depth of 27.8 km, the U.S. Geological Survey said on Sunday.
The California Department of Transportation said in a Twitter post that State Route 211 at Fernbridge was closed while it conducted safety inspections on the bridge following the tremor.
That same region of California, located in Humboldt County, was jolted by a magnitude 6.4 earthquake on Dec. 20, which crumpled homes and roads, ruptured utility lines and left thousands of residents without running water and electricity.
In the previous quake, at least a dozen people were injured, and two others died from medical emergencies that occurred during or just after the quake, according to the Humboldt County Sheriff's Office.
The region is known for relatively frequent seismic activity, although the 6.4-magnitude earthquake caused more disruption than usual in the largely rural area known for its redwood forests, local seafood, lumber industry and dairy farms.

The Kilauea volcano on Hawaii’s Big Island is erupting again, sending lava fountains and bursts of volcanic gas into the air.
The eruption began Thursday afternoon at the volcano’s crater, the U.S. Geological Survey said as it issued an alert for people on the ground and warned the aviation sector of airborne ash hazards.
So far, the lava from one of the world’s most active volcanoes is confined to within Kilauea’s crater, in a closed area of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, so there is no threat to communities, Hawaii’s emergency management agency said in a tweet.
