A Sharp Divide at the Supreme Court Over a One-Letter Word
In an immigration ruling that scrambled the usual alliances, the justices differed over the significance of the article “a.”

In an immigration ruling that scrambled the usual alliances, the justices differed over the significance of the article “a.”
https://www.nytimes.com/2021/04/29/us/p ... tw-nytimes
The 6-to-3 decision featured unusual alliances, with the three conservative justices most committed to interpreting statutes according to their plain words — Justices Clarence Thomas, Neil M. Gorsuch and Amy Coney Barrett — joining the court’s three-member liberal wing to form a majority.
The case concerned a 1996 federal law that allows immigrants subject to deportation to apply to stay in the country if they meet various criteria, including that they had been continuously present for at least 10 years. The law stops that time from accruing once immigrants receive “a notice to appear” for a deportation hearing listing various kinds of information, including the nature of the proceeding and when and where it will take place.
The question in the case was whether the government had to provide all of the information at once or could do so piecemeal. Justice Gorsuch, writing for the majority, said the statute’s use of the article “a” in “a notice to appear” was crucial.
“To an ordinary reader — both in 1996 and today — ‘a’ notice would seem to suggest just that: ‘a’ single document containing the required information, not a mishmash of pieces with some assembly required,” he wrote, giving other examples.

The tweeting machine says Josh Duggar got arrested by federal marshals and is being held in a jail in Arkansas without bond.
No word on the charges.

He has a court appearance this morning at 11 am in Arkansas.

Nope!
The world’s longest pedestrian suspension bridge has been completed in northern Portugal, where residents of the nearby town hope the tourist attraction will help revive a region whose economy was devastated by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Hidden between rock-strewn mountains covered with lush greenery and yellow flowers inside the Unesco-recognised Arouca Geopark, the 516 metres (1,700 feet) bridge hangs 175 metres above the fast-flowing River Paiva.
Before Sunday’s official opening ceremony, people from the nearby town of Arouca were on Thursday allowed to walk over the megastructure’s see-through metal grids.

I avoid hearing anything about that horrible family. Due to the new press interest in Josh, I've learned that he has 6 children with a 7th on the way. His wife is about to learn how to be a single mom of 7. BTW, there are lot of photos of him with Cruz, Huckabee & Rubio.

Re: Hijack This Thread
I am not at all surprised. Not because he’s a Duggar, or friends with right-wing politicians, but because this sort of crime is ubiquitous. It’s everywhere. And it’s a lot easier to commit than it used to be.
I’m all for law enforcement enforcing anti-child pornography statutes. But we’re deluding ourselves if we think they’re catching even one tenth of one percent of the perpetrators.
One of my cases involved a witness from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children who talked about how they try to identify the children in these images. I couldn’t imagine having to do that for a living.
If he’s guilty, Josh Duggar can go fuck himself. And if he’s not guilty, we’ll, he can still go fuck himself.

The judge in the Josh Duggar case has already stated that if he is released on bail, he has to have something called a third-party custodian. Can any of the IAAL types here explain this? I have not previously encountered this term.

An answer from Avvo:
https://www.avvo.com/legal-answers/3rd- ... 48191.html
As other attorneys in this forum have noted, a "third party custodian" is a person who vouches for a defendant in federal court, in order to help the defendant gain release on federal pre-trial supervision while the case is pending. Any citizen can act as a third party custodian if approved by the court, but a court will be most likely to grant pre-trial release to a third party custodian who is willing to allow federal pre-trial officers to visit the home, who does not have a significant criminal history, and who is familiar with the defendant. Third party custodians assume significant responsibilities, and will likely have intrusions on their privacy as a result of agreeing to serve in that capacity (such as home searches during pre-trial supervision and contacts with the federal probation officer). An experienced defense attorney will work with a defendant to determine possible third parties that are suitable, and will work with the custodian to answer any questions or concerns.

No, I couldn't. I could also tell that it wasn't English, but I enjoyed the hell out of it.

Mum said "That's lovely. Again, sing it, go on"
She's British. Which city I can't tell.
Re: Hijack This Thread
Sounds British to my untrained ear, but I think it’s also possible she’s Irish. The name on the TikTok seems to be Melissa Kearney.

Really? I couldn't make it out. In my defense, as a teenager I was disqualified from all branches of the military due to my hearing. I wanted to go Navy (tech). I passed the written tests with high marks / failed the physical, for the early entrance program.
