I belong to what appears to be a rapidly shrinking group that thinks all tattoos are hideous. I simply can’t think why anyone would want to disfigure themselves in that way.

I don't think all tats are hideous nor to do I think the group of people who are not getting them is shrinking. The opposite, actually.

Back when they were a fashion thing, many people got them in a peer-pressured drunken stupor. I don't see that in Gen Z anymore. They know how to wear custom message t-shirts that can be taken off at night before going to work the next morning.

To add: as a landlord and employer, visible tats are going to weigh in on my opinion and decision.

As long as there is not a tat of Richard Nixon on your upper back, I'm probably okay with them.

I don't have any either, nor plan to get any.

The tattoo that took me most aback was Helter and Skelter down the back of a young woman's calves. Beatles? Manson? 40 plus years past both.

Of course now I can't find it; it's probably on the Pitcairn Islands study site. There's an interesting list of the HMS Bounty crew's tattoos (spelled differently, which is part of why I can't find it).

If they count, I have six tattoos. If they don’t count, I have three. All of my tattoos are small and pretty well hidden. You would only see them when I’m wearing a bathing suit or a bellydance costume.

And I love your new tattoo, Sad Cafe!

My sister was a pathologist with the medical examiner’s office of a large East Coast city. When she started her career, the people who died in unusual circumstances were much more likely than the general population to have a tattoo. She joked that that the tattoos may have had a role in bringing about the tragic end. As time went on, tattoos became more widely popular across the population and the correlation disappeared.

My understanding is that tattoo removal has become a very big business these days.

No tattoos myself, but we buy quite a bit of ink and needles and Mrs Somerset has a discreet one. One of Mrs Somerset's brothers is a fairly well known tattoo artist in Cebu, and two of his sons are following in his footsteps. We have access to better supplies than they can get locally, so our Balikbayan boxes usually have a few bottles of special inks and couple of packets of needles. Getting a tat would be very easy, but not something I'm into.

Their style also tends to be a little heavy for me. Here's one of the son's pages:

Maybe but I wonder how much of that is getting rid of either bad tattoos or regrettable ones (ex lovers, etc).

He does very nice work - but I gotta admit, I might be a bit wary of going to a tattooist named "Harm"

*If* I ever get to be mobile again, I'd love to get a couple of tats. I'm closing in on 60, so I'm not to worried about coming to regret it when I get old. I'm already there :)
