Thank you, Mr. Gneiss, for the nifty clarification and explanation between the two ionic forms of iron. While I was aware of Fe+3, I didn't want to confuse my off-topic ramblings, and I wasn't up to speed on the conditions for that particular cation to exist.

I remember well that mess in the Animas River. Now if they can only clean up the Leviathan Mine Superfund site in Alpine County, California. But Caltrans closes the state highway during winter (it is closed now), and doesn't clear the highway until late April at the earliest, and sometimes into June if we have a heavy snowfall.

No doubt about me being a geeky science guy, eh?

As a hydrogeologist I participated in many remedial investigations in Colorado and Montana to characterize the extent of contamination by mining wastes and acid mine drainage. Understanding the iron cycle was part of the basic science one needed to complete those investigations.

We finished the Ranked Choice Voting count today in Alaska.

US Senate: Lisa Murkowski beat the Trump endorsed outsider Kelly Tshibaka.

US Representative: Mary Peltola beat the Trump endorsed Sarah Palin.

Republicans still hold the Governor’s seat.

The State House is evenly split D/R, we’ll have to see how the coalitions come together in January.

And David Eastman (R-Wasilla) is still facing an eligibility trial in December due to his Oath Keeper affiliation.

One interesting number from RCV, when the votes from the 3rd place candidate in the Senate race were split, they went 2000 - 20,000 for Murkowski.

220-213 in called races
222-213 expected (2 uncalled, both leaning to the GOP)

It takes 218 votes for speaker, there are 5 GOP who say they won't vote for Kevin, though this could be posturing to extract favors.

Thanks for posting. I was wondering what the latest count was. That means the Good Guys would have to flip 5 seats where vacancies occur from deaths, resignations or Republicans going to prison. Sure would be nice to see some moderates caucus with the Dems.

On the 5 who say they will not vote for McCarthy, I will believe it when it happens.

Alternately, those five and the entire Democratic caucus could elect a sane Republican (such as Liz Cheney) to the Speakership.

I would go for that. The Free-Dumb Caucus would go insane. (Well they already are but even more so.)

House rules don't specify that the Speaker has to be a member of the House.

As for Murkowski, I still stick with my previous comment. The democrats should actively court her. This is twice now in two elections that the Republicans tried to 1. Knock her off the ballot (via primary) or 2. Outright defeat her in the general. If we had a Murkowski we wouldn't need the turncoat from Arizona.

The Speaker needs a majority of votes cast, not a majority of the House as a whole.

These five could not vote, or vote "present," and McCarthy would still be elected.

Man, that scared me. I just checked my Lee registration and it's still D. If it wasn't for the primaries, I'd probably go I just because I worry, as a D in this pool of red blood in south Florida, I'm afraid my registration will get "lost."

Beyond my shock and awe  , I'm pretty sure it is related to me updating my address last week with the DMV and/or USPS. Something went klufunked in the data exchange as they are all tied in.

With Florida, I bitch much, but it runs pretty clean with their open records (sunshine) laws. You all know you love Florida Sunshine laws -- without such you would not get FLORIDA MAN stories.

Texas’s top elections official quits after overseeing controversial new voting laws
Secretary of state navigated rocky launch of new voting laws that resulted in thousands of discarded mail ballots

Associated Press
Mon 5 Dec 2022 23.02 GMT

Texas’s top elections official resigned Monday after an intense year of trying to reassure election skeptics, navigating the rocky launch of new voting laws that resulted in thousands of discarded mail ballots and overseeing a limited audit of the 2020 election.

Secretary of state John Scott, who was appointed by Republican governor Greg Abbott, came under immediate scrutiny from the moment he took the job in October 2021. He was briefly part of former president Donald Trump’s legal team that challenged the results of the 2020 election but said upon taking the job in Texas that he did not dispute that Joe Biden was the winner.

Right away, Scott was tasked with trying to give Texas voters confidence in election results and the ability to cast a ballot after Republicans passed a sweeping new voting law just weeks before his appointment. But those efforts got off to a bumpy start during Texas’s first-in-the-nation primary as voters struggled to navigate new mail voting requirements, resulting in counties throwing out nearly 23,000 mail ballots.

In the November elections, the rate of rejected ballots had returned to more normal levels, and Scott’s office said there were no major issues surrounding the election. “By listening directly to the concerns of local election officials, voters, and grassroots activists from across the political spectrum, I was able to understand how to better educate Texas voters about their most sacred civic duty,” Scott said in his resignation letter.

Scott said he will return to private legal practice. His successor will be chosen by Abbott, who was re-elected to a third term in November.
