Democrats fortify their blue wall — and Electoral College math — for 2024
Donald Trump's 2016 inroads in Rust Belt battlegrounds look more ephemeral than ever.
By ADAM WREN 11/09/2022 08:54 PM EST

The blue wall is back. As Democrats secured key electoral and historic victories up and down the ballot in states such as Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, they shored up their position in the Rust Belt ahead of 2024, rebuilding the so-called blue wall states that Donald Trump won in 2016. After Democrats’ better-than-expected performance Tuesday, never has Trump’s 2016 romp in the region looked more ephemeral. For the third consecutive election, Democrats have won consequential races in these three states, with Biden rolling back Trump’s victories there in 2020, and poised to do it again in 2024 based on returns this week.

If the dismantling of the blue wall states came at Trump’s own hand in 2016, so too did its reconstruction this week, as Democrats handily ousted candidates endorsed by the former president. What’s more, Democratic gains in Arizona and Georgia — where Democratic incumbent Mark Kelly leads Blake Masters in the Senate race, and Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-Ga.) and Republican Herschel Walker are heading to a runoff — further buttress the party’s improved Electoral College math ahead of 2024. After Tuesday, a revived Democratic coalition that turned out their base and won over swing voters in these states looks increasingly resilient.

In perhaps no place was this more evident than in Wisconsin, where Democrats not only denied the GOP a supermajority in the statehouse but where incumbent Tony Evers fended off a challenge from Trump-endorsed Tim Michels. Evers became the first Democratic governor since 1962 to win Wisconsin in a midterm year while a Democrat was serving in the White House. While there was one notable exception to Democrats’ good night in the state — Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) beat back a Democratic challenge to win a third term — the party emerged from the state with well-founded confidence about their prospects in the 2024 presidential race. “Trump stepped into office in 2016 by smashing a hole in the blue wall,” Wisconsin Democratic Chairman Ben Wikler told POLITICO on Wednesday. “Gov. Evers and [Michigan] Gov. [Gretchen] Whitmer began to rebuild that wall. And now in the moment of greatest peril with a Democratic president, the wall holds firm. It’s a historic and profoundly consequential victory for Democracy.”

In Pennsylvania, meanwhile, Josh Shapiro and John Fetterman scored crucial gubernatorial and senatorial wins in a pivotal 2024 state, dispatching Trump-backed Doug Mastriano and Mehmet Oz, respectively. And in Michigan — a battleground state that Trump in 2016 became the first Republican to carry since 1988 — Democrats secured wins in the gubernatorial, attorney general and secretary of state races. They also flipped the Michigan Senate for the first time in nearly 40 years. “The fact that we’ve got a state in the Midwest — that’s probably one of the most consequential battleground states in the country — that now has a Democratic trifecta for the first time in nearly 40 years heading into 2024, it just changes everything,” said Michigan State Sen. Mallory McMorrow, who raised millions of dollars on the back of a viral speech, money she devoted to help win back the Republican-controlled legislative body.

To win, Democrats like McMorrow in the Rust Belt beat back the culture wars and successfully awayed what she called “normal voters.” Pete Buttigieg, the transportation secretary and former 2020 presidential candidate who rose to national prominence with a December 2016 manifesto outlining how Democrats could win back flyover country, said his party has improved its messaging to Rust Belt voters since then. “I think there’s been a lot of growth,” Buttigieg, who barnstormed Michigan last week, told POLITICO in an interview in suburban Detroit last week. “I think it’s part of the reasons why the results of Michigan and Wisconsin were different from 2016 to 2020. But I think there’s more to do before people fully hear the ways that we are best aligned with the values of the middle of the country.”

Even in Ohio, where Democratic Senate hopeful Tim Ryan lost to J.D. Vance, his coattails boosted fellow Rust Belt Democrats like Rep. Marcy Kaptur, who won by double digits. Ryan, said Ohio Democratic Party Chair Elizabeth Walters on Wednesday, “ran one of the best races Ohio has ever seen.” In yet another sign of a strengthening map for Democrats, several incumbents in Rust Belt states survived a forbidding political environment for their party. Among them were Reps. Susan Wild in Pennsylvania and Angie Craig in Minnesota. The wins in some contested Rust Belt states remove a potential obstacle for the party in 2024, said David Pepper, former chairman of the Ohio Democratic Party. “These states are important institutionally,” Pepper said, “because you have people now who will oversee elections in a way that we can trust.”

Oh, so you're saying I have to run this joint another two years, huh?

And if'n I do, you promise Democrats will win and my car won't be stuck in the mud again?

'Cuz Tuesday was brutal for me' n ol' Wifehorn. Down the crapper is what it was.

'Course, by 2024 something will replace Zoom, but we'll still have a Meetup.

Dang right, Foggy! (Chants of "Six More Years" "Six More Years") :P
Biden stops the Dem bedwetting ... for now
Let’s be honest, it will come again. After all, it’s the Democrats.
By DAVID SIDERS and CHRISTOPHER CADELAGO
02/08/2023 04:52 PM EST

Many Democrats are terrified of President Joe Biden running for a second term. Most of them, according to recent polls, don’t want him to. But in his State of the Union address on Tuesday, Biden did something largely unexpected: He lessened the mental anguish of those privately nerve-wracked, infamously bed-wetting Democrats — for a moment, at least. Inside the White House, where aides anxiously watched the proceedings, a palpable relief set in as the 73-minute speech progressed. Some said they literally began breathing easier once Biden got on a roll, taking comfort in his smiling retorts to jeering Republican House members.

It wasn’t only that the 80-year-old, gaffe-prone president had avoided any serious misstep. It was that Biden showed he was up for a fight and, frankly, had a few uppercuts left in him. “The energy of the speech, particularly the joyful jousting with the Republican hecklers, was a powerful rejoinder to those who question his mental acuity,” said David Axelrod, the former Barack Obama adviser, and someone not prone to hold back on Biden skepticism. “The speech,” he added, gave “Democrats a messaging road map.”

For months, uneasiness among Democrats about the president had centered on fears that it would be much harder for him to run in 2024 against any younger, less objectionable Republican nominee than Donald Trump. But in his sparring with heckling House members Tuesday evening, Biden demonstrated that there was an entire constellation of Republicans beyond the former president whom he could turn into a foil. Doing so had long been the plan of Biden’s advisers, but watching it actually happen in front of one of his largest audiences in recent memory was a different dynamic entirely. “It doesn’t have to be Trump being the boorish rude jerk if the rest of them are doing the work for him,” said Matt Bennett, a co-founder of the center-left group Third Way. One day after the State of the Union, Bennett said, “It’s a good day to be a Biden Democrat.”

That one evening could provide such profound relief and zest is a testament to the psyche of the Democratic Party. By most measures, Biden has proven to be one of the most effective Democrats in modern history: defeating a sitting incumbent, enacting historic legislation and scoring major midterm victories even while his approval rating hovered in the low 40s. And yet, the party — as it is wont to do — laments.
***
For Biden’s allies, Tuesday evening wasn’t a revelation so much as an affirmation of their long-held belief: that the party worries too much and too often about him and can’t seem to accept that he’s been a success. “He’s the master of lowering expectations and then clearing them by a mile,” said one Democrat close to the White House. “Whether that’s the press or Republicans lowering the bar for him, when it matters he just keeps knocking it out of the park. It’s something you can’t teach. You can only claim luck so many times. It’s working. It’s just working for him.”

Biden’s goading of Republicans on Social Security and Medicare on Tuesday night (getting them to publicly take cuts to the programs off the table) was, for many party allies, the evening’s crowning achievement. It amounted to what Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers, called a “brilliant master class.” Bennett said Biden “set a trap and the Republicans walked right into it. It was incredible.”
***
Joseph Geevarghese, executive director of the Bernie Sanders-aligned group Our Revolution, said the president had missed an opportunity to “up the ante” on Republicans by threatening to govern more on a range of issues by executive action. But as a table-setting address for Biden’s likely re-election campaign, Tuesday could hardly have gone better. “People continually underestimate Joe Biden,” said Kelly Dietrich, a former Democratic fundraiser and founder of the National Democratic Training Committee, which trains candidates across the country. “I know people worry about him being too old, but he’s crushing this job right now.”

“It’s a good day to be a Biden Democrat.”
Yes. And I find myself, contrary to all expectations, to be a Biden Democrat. And I don't care a fig about his poll nubmers. Nubmers, schmubmers, I always say.

Actually, schmubmers is not easy to say. At all. Probably because I am not Turkish, or even Turk-ish, and I don't speak Swahili.

OPINION
Budowsky: The Biden and Democratic advantages in 2024
BY BRENT BUDOWSKY, OPINION CONTRIBUTOR - 03/15/23 7:15 AM ET

The American economy has been threatened by a run on the banks, and President Biden quickly mobilized his administration to work with the Federal Reserve Board and FDIC to devise a highly successful plan to resolve the issue. Meanwhile, former President Trump and many leading Republicans have no explanation for why they removed many of the important financial reforms instituted by President Obama and Democrats after the 2008 financial disaster.

Similarly, as the International Criminal Court revealed it was expediting its investigation of war crimes against Russia, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) questioned Ukraine’s importance to American security, calling the war merely a territorial dispute. This, compared to Biden courageously walking the streets of Kyiv and unifying the NATO alliance.

Who would the American people, our democratic allies and free people everywhere prefer to be commander in chief?

There is a clear and present danger that action to extend the debt ceiling will be defeated by House Republican obstructionism, potentially plunging the American and world economies into a devastating crisis — who would not prefer President Biden, who can work with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) for a bipartisan solution, over any of his 2024 GOP opponents?

Let’s all extend best wishes to McConnell to return to great health as soon as possible. While McConnell is a fierce partisan on many matters, he does have a sense of deep understanding of critical matters such as defending democracy in Ukraine and reaching agreement on the debt ceiling, as do a significant number of his Senate Republicans whom Biden has always sought to work with throughout his career.

President Biden and Democrats are united to spend every day between today and Election Day 2024 reelecting Biden, winning control of the House and Senate and working to defend the rights of voters. They have a record of the Democratic president and House and Senate Democrats working together, often with bipartisan support, to achieve a historic record of legislative accomplishments on a long record of issues.

Building roads and bridges. Lowering prescription drug prices. Creating historic numbers of high-wage new jobs. Making life better for women, families and children. Enhancing respect for America around the world. Improving health insurance and child care. Raising incomes and enhancing working conditions for working men and women throughout the nation.

These achievements for Biden and Democrats in Washington are matched by Democratic governors and legislatures in states across the nation. This will make clear to voters that the pathway for Democrats winning office is the pathway for Americans winning a better life. In a more united nation. With leaders who believe we are in this together.

All this, compared to a deeply divided GOP that has been engaging in hurling insults in early primary and caucus states, led by Donald Trump, who I predict will never guarantee he will support the 2024 nominee and not run against him or her as a third-party candidate.

The greatest advantage Biden and Democrats have for 2024 is that they will be seen by voters as a united party, seeking bipartisan cooperation whenever possible. Republicans will be seen as a bitterly divided party with its most visible candidate embroiled in legal cases, insulting his GOP competitors throughout the campaign.

Budowsky was an aide to former Sen. Lloyd Bentsen (D-Texas) and former Rep. Bill Alexander (D-Ark.), who was chief deputy majority whip of the House of Representatives.

Not sure if you're kidding :P But not really... historically, the party in the White House usually gets, as President Obama put it, "Shellacked" in the mid-terms. Coming out of COVID, supply chain disruptions and Russia's invasion of Ukraine caused spikes in gas prices and consumer goods. While that was worldwide, most Americans don't pay attention to that. So while the Summer held surprises like the overturning of Roe V Wade, which electrified a lot of women, and the lowering of gas prices, there was still a school of thought that the "red wave" Suranis mentioned would prevail. Junk GOP polls like Rasmussen flooded the zone and threw the polling averages off. If you check out any Fox News clips from election week, they smugly talked about the LANDSLIDE that was about to happen. However, Democrats kept the Senate, and a lot of new Democratic Governors were elected. Now the GOP has an advantage in 2024, they have fewer seats to defend and there are more Democrats in red states up for re-election. But as the story above says, if voters look at who is trying to make things better for Americans, vs. ridiculous culture wars and fights that affect very, very few actual voters, Democrats are going to win again. We'll work our hearts out again to make sure that happens.

By contrast, I was quietly predicting that The Dems would do pretty well. Nancy Pelosi said the Dems were holding their own a few weeks before the Election. But ya everyone else was in doom and gloom mode.

Ironically that made the Dems not bother with some "no hope" races that turned out to be extremely close. If the Dems had supported Christ he might have unseated DeSantis, and Boebert's race was so dammed close that if the Dems had dropped some pennys there she would be gone. But the Dems have a terrible habit of listening to the Fox Inspired media narrative.

50 State Strategy. Of course, Elections have been made so stupidly expensive in your country that God does not have enough money for a 50 state strategy...

Happiness going into Easter Weekend (and Happy Passover):

The new MAGA GOP logo:

5 hours ago - Politics & Policy
The GOP's epic losing streak
Mike Allen

If Republicans step back and look beyond the legal and social-media spectacle of Donald J. Trump, they'll see screaming political sirens everywhere they gaze. Why it matters: The GOP's political trouble has been unfolding slowly but unmistakably, starting even before Trump's loss to Joe Biden in 2020.

First, the 2018 House elections were a disaster for Republicans: Democrats had a net gain of 40 seats to take over the House — their largest gain since the post-Watergate election of 1974. Then Trump lost the presidency. Next, Republicans blew two runoff elections in Georgia and lost control of the U.S. Senate. The runoffs took place a day before Trump backers stormed the Capitol. Then, Republicans won the legal fight over abortion as Trump-appointed justices helped to ensure the reversal of Roe v. Wade. But the GOP lost a series of political battles over it afterward — a reflection of polls indicating that most Americans support abortion rights. GOP-led state legislatures have shown no signs of slowing their push to enact stricter abortion bans, suggesting continuing political backlash. Republicans put high-profile election deniers on the 2022 midterm ballot in key state and federal races — only to see several lose winnable elections. Republicans blew a chance to control the Senate by nominating too many hard-to-elect-in-a-swing-state Trump facsimiles. Their hopes of a big House majority were erased for the same reason, creating constant headaches for new Speaker Kevin McCarthy. Just this week, progressive Democrats triumphed in two of this year's most consequential elections. Brandon Johnson, a teachers' union organizer, was elected Chicago mayor. In swing state Wisconsin, Democrat-backed Janet Protasiewicz flipped the state Supreme Court to liberals in a landslide, after leaning into her support for abortion rights. Senate Republicans have been gifted a historically favorable 2024 map — but hard-right candidates who appeal to the GOP base again threaten to inject uncertainty into at least five winnable races. Trump is driving an agenda dominated by vengeance and victimhood, diverting Republicans from the inflation- and crime-centered messages that helped them in the midterms.

Reality check: Trump, if anything, is stronger and more likely to win the GOP nomination than he was after the November midterms. Republicans in Congress have rallied to Trump's defense since his indictment.

By the numbers: For all his growing popularity among Republicans, Trump remains wildly unpopular nationally. Polls show Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis — who trails Trump by an average of 26 points among Republicans — would fare far better than Trump in a matchup against President Biden. Biden's approval rating has hovered around 42%, a dismal figure — but still better than Trump's.

The bottom line: Put polls aside. How likely does it seem that Trump will do better with persuadable voters than his 2020 loss when you toss Jan. 6, a 34-count Manhattan indictment and possible federal indictments into the mix?

Bonus: Kevin McCarthy's blame game sweeps Capitol Hill
As debt limit pressure mounts, it’s GOP leadership — not just the rank-and-file — that’s in disarray.

Hope that he stays alive through the next election cycle.

Okay, you asked for it.

Gosh, it delights me to see you, Dear Don
Looking so down in the dumps
Every guy here'd love to beat you, Dear Don
Just for being a Trump
There's no man in town as reviled as you
You're everyone's least fav'rite guy
Everyone's pissed and up-riled by you
And it's not very hard to see why

No one's sick as The Don
No one's thick as The Don
No one's hair's as incredibly slick as The Don
For there's no man in town half as slimy
(Defect, impure paragon!)
You can ask whose company is grimy
And they'll tell you the one that belongs to The Don
Who pays (tarts like The Don?)
Who breaks (farts like The Don?)
Who grabs other people's parts like The Don?
As a landlord, yes, I'm discriminating
(Oy, what a goy, that there Don)

I needed encouragement
Thank you, Ted Cruz
Well, there's no one as easy to bolster as you
Too much? (Wrong!)

No one shits like The Don
So unfit like The Don
On a deplaning ramp, nobody trips like The Don
When I drink, my hands start to quiver
And advisors of mine say a prayer
First, the germs make me shiver
So I never wipe my behind
(Is that hair?)
I don't care

No one eats like The Don
Gets bad beats like The Don
On a golf course, nobody cheats like The Don
I'm especially good at mulliganing
(Free shot for The Don!)
When I was a lad, I ate four Happy Meals
Every morning to help me get large
And now that I'm grown, I eat five Happy Meals
So I'm roughly the size of a barge!

Who lacks brains (like The Don)
Entertains (like The Don)
Who can make up these witless nicknames like The Don
I use gilding in all of my decorating
Say it again
Orangutan among men?
Without super success?
Don't you know? Can't you guess?
Ask his fans and his five hangers-on
There's just one guy in town who's going to go down
And his name's, T-R-U-M-P
He's been "indicated"
It just occurred to me that he's illiterate
And he's never actually had spelled it out loud before
The Don!
