Heard a guy taking it to the school board in Miami, FL on the radio this morning. He wasn't a parent. He was gay, and contended that trying to help LGBT students only hurts them. His contention was that the ostracizing and whatnot he was subject to shaped his character and made him stronger, and that by attempting to eliminate that in our schools we are doing our children a disservice. Oh, and his future children will never go to a public school, they will go to a private school where they can be tormented as god intended if they are different.

Christians and Muslims coming together in support of censorship. Almost brings a tear to your eye.
School board meeting cut short as protests over LGBTQ books grow unruly

Roxanne McDonald banged her gavel repeatedly during Monday night’s school board meeting in Dearborn, Mich., where hundreds denouncing books with LGBTQ content packed into the Dearborn Public Schools administration building.

Protesters, upset about books in school libraries that they consider too sexually explicit for students, carried signs that read, “Keep your porno books to yourself,” “If democracy matters, we’re the majority” and “Protect the children,” the last one written out in five languages. Others were there to support the LGBTQ community and champion inclusivity.

People shouted over each other, the school board members, McDonald’s gavel and even warnings from police.

McDonald, who chairs the school board, pleaded for calm. “Let’s show our children how to behave with civil discourse,” she said.

But when attendees were told their public comments would be limited to three minutes, they booed McDonald loudly.

Shortly after, she and the other board members left, saying they would be recessing “until we can get the situation under control.” Despite a significant police presence, which included pleas from the police chief, the uproar continued, and the meeting was suspended until Thursday night.

It was the most recent clash in Dearborn between parents who say their children are being exposed to sexually explicit books in school and educators who say they’ve updated a system to assess materials to make sure they’re appropriate for students. The tension mirrors the growing antagonism between schools and parents that has flared up around the country in recent years, fueled by pandemic-related school closures and debates over teachings on race and gender.
:snippity:
Like other parts of the country, conservative Christians were the first to raise fears about books with LGBTQ content in the Michigan school district, which serves the city of Dearborn and part of Dearborn Heights in the Detroit metro area, the Detroit Free Press reported. They then rallied the significant Muslim population in both cities to join them.

Weeks ahead of Monday’s meeting, local Muslim leaders pushed people to attend to tell the school board they oppose LGBTQ books being in public schools. One of the most prominent Muslim leaders in the state, Imam Sayed Hassan Al-Qazwini of the Islamic Institute of America in Dearborn Heights, used his sermon on Friday to urge his followers to go to the meeting to protest.

“Some of those books are completely inappropriate for our children to read,” Al-Qazwini said, according to the Free Press. “Some of those books promote pornography. Some of them promote homosexuality. We don’t need this.”

In this episode, a local (to me) school board member suggests that parents pull their children out of the public school district THAT SHE REPRESENTS and put them into private schools or homeschooling.

You need not have kids in school to run and serve on the board. You only need to be a resident. Residents without children and even those who homeschool or send their kids to private schools still do pay taxes to support their local school (directly, through sales taxes, or through their rent, as the owner would make sure that the rent covers property tax).

Of course, she is quite the hypocrite if she homeschools but still sits on a board that makes decisions for the public schools. I assume she only ran to be difficult and stick it to people she hates.

The East Ramapo Central School District in New York took this idea to extremes. In New York (unlike most places), property owners pay a separate school tax set by the local school board. A group of people who send their children to private schools got elected to the school board, then systematically gutted the school district financially because they didn’t want to pay for services they weren’t using.

Things got really ugly.

This American Life did a terrific series on it. Since the series ran in 2014 there has been a ton of litigation.

Our local special elections are coming up, and as usual there are a number of candidates running for school board seats. We have eight people running for two seats. Three have no prior government experience. The same three are endorsed by known conservatives and/or elected GOP state party members. And (surprise!) they have similar statistical concerns about the level of education children receive (percentages aplenty!), prioritization, and listening to parents. How odd. Hmmm ...

One of these three has deeper pockets with elections signs all over the place. That's usually my first clue not to elect someone for a school board position. It's a political stepping stone so you can put prior experience on your resume. This is your "easy in". No thank you.

Two of the candidates are actual teachers. One is a retired principal and math teacher from this district. Long list of endorsements from teachers, elected officials, and parents. Seems like a good choice. The other is a former teacher, and now an outreach director for a local healthcare system. Her endorsements are even longer. Some of the letters of support are very heart warming. She seems like the best choice as well.

The remaining candidates may have been good choices. Emphasis on maybe. There is nothing remarkable about their statements, no perceived biases or political affiliations, and no crazy talk. For example one is a mother with kids in school in the district. She says she wants to get involved. She doesn't express any concerns, or list priorities. So, do we stack it up to this being her first run and doesn't know how to sell herself to the public, or is she a stealth candidate with a horrible agenda once she gets on the board?

Thankfully we have two who are eminently qualified. Our choices will be simple. This year.
