Fat Bear Week 2022 at Katmai National Park in Alaska

Katmai National Park is one of the last complete ecosystems on the planet. Part of that ecosystem is a very large population of brown bears. Alaska has the largest concentration of brown bears in the US. Where is the best place to bear watch in the world? Brook River in Alaska.

I. AM. OBSESSED!

Katmai livestreams on Brook River when bears are active; early June through early Nov. I discovered the livestreams in early June, just as the bears were coming to the river to eat after 6 months of hibernation.

The park has cameras at several locations along the river. When the bears come out of hibernation, they gather at Brook Falls to binge on salmon as the salmon travel upstream to spawn. The best camera for bear watching in early fall is, imo, the River Watch Channel.

All known bears at the park are numbered. Some have nicknames, but many don't. One of the bears, 747, aka "bearforce one" and "Colbert" is one of the largest brown bears in the world. He weighs over 1400 pounds when he goes into hibernation. 747 just went into hibernation. He's usually one of the first bears to enter hibernation.

747 became the park's most dominant bear last summer. When younger bears see him, they either leave the area, or they at least leave the area surrounding "his" spot at the fall.

For the last 3 weeks before hibernation, 747 was struggling to get up the river bank at his favorite spot. He's just huge.

The fan favorite is Otis. He's 26, the oldest male bear at Katmai Park. He's a low drama bear. He's lost several teath. He can't compete for the best fishing spots anymore because younger adult bears push him to other spots, but that hasn't stopped him from being one of the consistently fattest bears at the park. He is a master angler. Otis has won 4 of the 8 Fat Bear Contests.

Otis enjoys daily naps at Brook Falls ... while sitting in the river. He isn't napping in the below pic.

Fat Bear Week begins on Mon. The contestants for the 2022 Fat Bear Competition will be announced at 4:00 pm PST on Mon. The first round of voting begins on Oct 5.

The first every Fat Bear Junior Competition was Sept 29-30. This little butterball, 909jr, won the award for Fat Cub 2022.

Screenshot_20220930-183113_Chrome.jpg
Screenshot_20220930-183113_Chrome.jpg (76.25 KiB) Viewed 6118 times

Picture 1 is when 909jr left hibernation in early June. Picture 2 is from Sept 25, 2022. She gained at least 60 pounds in less than 12 weeks.

I've watched a lot of 909jr this season. Her cousin, 910jr, sits in front of the main camera on the Brook Falls livestream most days, waiting as her mama fishes. 909jr is 1.5 years old. 910jr is 7 months old. They played right in front of the camera most days until recently. Both mothers are fishing lower parts of Brook River right now. I will post more about 909jr and 910jr in a different post.

Fat bears are successful bears. Alaskan brown bears, because of the length of their hibernation, must be fat. Very fat. These bears will lose 30% of their body mass during hibernation.

Fat Bear Week has made the news this past week.

This summer, something amazing happened at Katmai.

Touching Video Captured 'Surprising' Reunion Between Bear Sisters
While it is common for bear cubs to play with one another, it is less likely that the two cubs playing together are cousins.

A now-viral video shared by @exploreorg on TikTok on August 18 captured several clips showing a rare reunion between two brown bear sisters and the playtime their cubs shared with each other in Alaska's Katmai National Park and Preserve.

"It's not often that we see bear families reunite like this," read the caption of the video, which was viewed nearly 700,000 times.
:snippity:

At the start of the video, two bear cubs are seen playing with each other.

"This month on bear cam, we witnessed a surprising reunion," read the text over another clip in the video that showed four bears standing together. "Sisters 909 and 910 greeted each other in the river, and their own cubs met for the first time."

A clip that was taken from footage in 2016 showed 909 and 910 sitting together with their mother, Beadnose who has not been sighted in about four years.

"This week, sisters 909 and 910 fished next to each other in a spot their mom Beadnose was known to frequent as their cubs watch and wait and learn together," read the text over a clip that showed the two bears. "A family legacy that lives on."

TikTok viewers shared their appreciation for the sweet montage in the comments section.

"I honestly believe they don't forget one another," a viewer wrote.

"Well now I'm sobbing on a random Thursday afternoon," commented another. "To see 909 and 910 as cubs [with] Beadnose & now reunited as moms without her. I hope they stay safe.

The Reunion Continues
The family continued to spend time with each other and the cousins have bonded, as seen in other follow-up videos, even though officials initially thought the reunion would be short.

"They first met at the beginning of the summer when their moms 910 and 909 reunited in an encounter we thought would be brief," read the text over a video posted on Friday. "Rangers were surprised: extended families do not spend time together, but the Beadette family continued to hang."

Another clip showed the two sisters playing together in a grassy patch of land. The video noted that this was an event that has never been seen in the 10 years the bear cam was installed.

Officials with the national park's natural resource team told Newsweek in an email that siblings playing together is not uncommon, even after they are "emancipated."

"We regularly see siblings spending significant time together as subadults and playing occasionally as adults," officials said. "That said, this was a very unique situation in that two sows (909 and 910) with cubs play with each other while the cubs played together."

Those bears are fascinating. IIRC, they don't so much eat the salmon as they do the skin of the salmon, leaving the meat for other creatures. Lots of fatty oils in that skin.

Of the several cameras in the area, one fascinating one during the fishing season of the bears is a underwater camers, see a bear paddling along in the water

PS. I was astonished to read that a bear goes into hibernation so early in autumn. Though the berry season is over, all picked or dropped overripe to the ground, and the fish would be getting rare. I understand that in parts of Alaske they had the first frost and are expecting snow within weeks.

Initially, bears do exactly that. Their favorite parts of salmon are the fattiest parts: skin, brain, and roe.

Because the salmon are so plentiful during the salmon run, bears eat their favorite parts of the fish and then let the rest of the fish float down river. When the salmon run ends, bears eat most of each fish. Brook River has 2 salmon runs, sockeye salmon and then silver salmon.

I watched one bear catching a salmon every 3 minutes for over 20 minutes. He's the 2nd most dominant bear, so he gets some of the best fishing spots. He'd grab a fish, take 2 strips of skin, and then release it. Now that the salmon runs are over, he eats as much of each fish as possible.

Bears eat at least 20,000 calories each day to gain as much weight as possible. Bears catch approx 30 salmon per day when salmon are most plentiful.

Adolescent bears are still trying to figure out how to fish. Thankfully, they can scavenge the parts of the salmon the adult fish toss. There are lots of dead salmon after spawning, too.

Mother bears are very dependent on scavenged salmon. They are typically hesitant to bring cubs to the best fishing spots because so many bears congregate at those spots. Male bears kill cubs. One cub was killed last week. It is suspected that another was killed at the river in June.

Whe the salmon run ends, most bears rely on scavenged salmon. Otis used to spend his waking hours at Brook Falls. Now he spends his waking hours down river, eating fish that's been dead for 2 months. Which is gross.

Underwater cam!

The first part of this video shows clips from the underwater cam.

My favorite clip from underwater cam:

The length of bear hibernation correlates with the length of cold weather in an area . Bears in CA will hibernate approx 2 months per year. Bears in Alaska and northern Russia spend half of each year hibernating.

It started to snow last week at Katmai. Bears get ice on their fur even during early July.

*856 was the alpha bear at Katmia National Park from 2011-2020. In 2021, 747 challenged 856, and won. This season, 856 has repeatedly challenged 747, but lost all but once. 856 and 747 have been challenging each other all summer.

747 is the first bear to leave the river each fall to hibernate. He's been gone for 2 weeks.

Holly, in all her roly-poly gloriousness.

Holly is a very special bear. Several years ago, she did something extremely rare in the bear world; she adopted an abandoned cub.

The cub, now bear 503, was abandoned because the mother was trying to save his life. Bear 856 is an enormous and, at the time, most dominant bear at Katmai. Mom went into estrous a year sooner than she should have. 856 was courting her. He has a history of killing cubs. Male bears court female bears for 8+ days. Courting = stalking in the bear world. While 503's mother seemed heartless, she was trying to save her cub's life. Holly adopted 503, nursing him for a season, and raising him with her single cub.

Today was the first of two semi-finals.

Bear 747 (aka Bearforce One) beat Ms. 435 (aka Holly).

747 maintained a steady, early lead until approximately 4:00 pm this afternoon. Suddenly, 435 took the lead! The crowds went wild! Was this a repeat of the 2020 election? Had Otis, in his frustration over yesterday's loss, taken revenge? Was there a mass social media call for votes for 435? Did 747 step on a wire?

After voting closed, the culprits that caused this chaos were discovered.

It was 504's cubs. The youngest cub distracted us all with its unbelievable adorableness. The eldest broke into the server room and screwed with the tech.

Today's winner 747:

504's cub's shenanigans were much more nefarious than originally known.

The cubs hacked the voting system! They used a bot to give Holly 9000 votes! It was a bot!!

Thankfully, rangers were on top of things. They let it slip that 504's cubs have been pulling stunts all season. The rangers have just never seen 2 cubs so tech savvy at such a young age! Thus, the rangers were caught unprepared for such shenanigans.

The park rangers have had a stern discussion with 504, who now assures us this won't happen again.
