Fire!
Fortunately not a fire, just a fire-related lawsuit. The topic came up on a fire-fighting forum that I frequent.
The fire fighters aren't too happy about this and view the lawsuit as frivolous. Curious as to what any of you may think of this. I've only read the reports, haven't read the lawsuit.
The plaintiffs: https://fseee.org/Eugene environmental group sues Forest Service to stop retardant drops for wildfires
https://www.statesmanjournal.com/story/ ... 559141007/
The lawsuit alleges the continued use of retardant from aircraft violates the Clean Water Act.
It requests a judge to declare the pollution illegal, and was filed in U.S. District Court in Montana by Forest Service Employees for Environmental Ethics.

(original AutoBlog)73 cars destroyed in a fire at a Texas pumpkin patch
Jonathon Ramsey
Tue, October 18, 2022 at 8:18 PM·
Over the weekend, the Robinson Family Farm in Temple, Texas, held one of its three regular annual events, a Fall Festival with the fan favorite pumpkin patch. The day didn't go as planned after a fire started in the field of dry grass where visitors parked their cars, consuming 73 vehicles, some of them reduced to wheels and scraps of charred metal.
One attendee on Facebook wrote, "I have to say that is the most exciting and expensive pumpkin patch we've been to" after their family van "burned to a crisp."
The Bell County Fire Marshall's Office suspects the fire started when someone threw a cigarette into the grass. Fire Marshall Chris Mahlstedt wrote on Facebook, "We are seeking information on a possible person who may have discarded a cigarette into the grassy parking area. There have been some comments made on multiple social media posts stating there may have been witnesses to this claim."
The good news is no one was injured. Farm owner Helen Robinson thanked a supportive community and says it will take time to get the place back in order. She told local channel KXAN, "We still want to be the Robinson Family Farm that everybody knows and loves. Be patient with us as we work through that." The farm is trying to open again this weekend, and has taken several steps to give attendees the October experience everyone wanted, such as by keeping the pumpkin patch open an additional weekend. KXAN said the farm is also "accepting donations of car seats and other needs for the attendees who lost their vehicles in Saturday’s fire."

Fire!
The Mr went to cataraft school on the American River a week after this fire started. As fires do sometimes, it jumped over the rafting company’s acreage, so they didn’t cancel the class. (He went to school to prepare for a trip in Utah which was canceled due to weather after they’d already driven up there. Half their party turned back from Denver -snowy/icy passes.)
He looked like a chimney sweep after two days. He said it was like rowing in lava without the heat: chunky water. He trashed his clothes.

Fire!
I think this is a different fire from the one above. Both are relatively close to the Kansas Nebraska border.

Chemical plant fire and possibility of explosions prompt evacuations in Georgia
The fire started at about 4 a.m. Monday at the plant outside the port city of Brunswick, sending a large plume of thick smoke into the air.

SAVANNAH, Ga. — A large fire burned Monday inside a chemical plant on the coast of Georgia, where authorities ordered about 100 nearby homes to evacuate because of threats from toxic smoke and potential explosions.
Emergency responders safely evacuated a small handful of employees working when the fire broke out at about 4 a.m. Monday at the plant outside the port city of Brunswick, Georgia, said fire Capt. Eric Prosswimmer, who was on the scene with fire crews from Jacksonville, Florida, sent to help battle the flames.
The fire sent a large plume of thick smoke into the air from the plant, about 70 miles south of Savannah.
As a precaution, local emergency officials ordered neighborhoods within a 1-mile radius of the plant to evacuate. People within a 3-mile radius were told to shelter in place.
Wayne Neal, chairman of Glynn County’s elected Board of Commissioners, estimated roughly 100 households had been told to evacuate. Sheriff’s deputies were using patrol cars to block entrances to affected neighborhoods.
Smoke from the plant had largely died down by late morning. But fire still burned inside, Prosswimmer said, and changing winds could stir up more smoke. Hazardous materials crews were working to survey the threats to determine whether evacuations should cover a larger area.
“We will evacuate more than we need to evacuate,” Prosswimmer told a news conference. “I know it’s a big inconvenience to the people, but it’s the right thing to do for health and safety reasons.”
Officials said they were mostly concerned about hazards posed by smoke drifting into populated areas. There had also been explosions at the site.
Prosswimmer said heat from the fire had caused three metal tanks containing chemicals to explode. Fighting the blaze was further complicated when firefighters depleted more than 1 million gallons (3.8 million liters) of water stored in tanks on the site.
Prosswimmer said firefighters had backed away from the fire to await the arrival of tankers carrying more water to the scene.
“We’re going to take very calculated, slow steps at this and make sure no one’s in jeopardy,” Prosswimmer said, adding: “Right now we’re staged way far back from it and some of it’s just being allowed to burn.”
He said one firefighter suffering from exhaustion had been taken to a hospital and was in stable condition. There were no other injuries.
The plant is operated by Symrise, a German company that produces fragrances, flavoring and other ingredients for foods and cosmetics. The Georgia plant manufactures fragrance ingredients used in perfumes, detergents and household cleaners, said Symrise spokesperson Christina Witter.

Yikes! Glad I didn't have to commute today, or I'd have been stuck in traffic a couple of blocks away from this. May have to go and view it this weekend, but dang, this is so close to the RR tracks that carry the Sounder trains (plus freight) and the Kent Station for commuters getting on and off train, parking, etc.

Fire rages at Illinois chemical plant, residents ordered to shelter

A chemical plant in northern Illinois went up in flames on Wednesday morning, sending up plumes of black smoke and prompting officials to advise nearby residents to shelter in place as emergency crews responded to the blaze.
The fire broke out at the Carus Chemical Company complex in LaSalle, a city of less than 10,000 residents located about 100 miles southwest of Chicago.
Fire crews were called to the scene at 9 a.m. after an explosion at the plant, and the ensuing blaze caused significant damage before it was contained, LaSalle Fire Chief Jerry Janick said at a news conference. Additional equipment was ordered to fully extinguish the fire and start an investigation.
All workers were evacuated and accounted for with no injuries, according to a spokesperson for the family-owned company.
Carus produces an oxidant used to treat drinking and waste water, phosphates for corrosion control, and carbon capture products used for air purification, according to its website.

The fire, Ivey wrote, “has the potential to impact the health, safety, and welfare of citizens living nearby.”
That proclamation came after repeated pleas from residents who have been driven from their homes and complained of worsening health impacts. It came after the filing of a class-action lawsuit, and after the Environmental Protection Agency began testing air quality around the site.
It came more than two weeks after county officials issued their own emergency declaration. And after ongoing confusion over who exactly should be keeping tabs on a private landfill that was designed to accept only “green” waste, such as vegetation and tree stumps, but in the past had been found to have tires and other potentially harmful materials on-site.
Ivey’s declaration came as state environmental officials formally asked the EPA to lead the effort to put out the sprawling underground blaze, acknowledging they do not have the expertise to tackle such a fire.

Authorities are investigating after a heritage-listed church in north-west London, described as an “architectural and historical treasure”, was destroyed by fire.
Eighty firefighters battled the blaze at St Mark’s church in Hamilton Terrace, St John’s Wood, from 11.19pm on Thursday until it was under control at 2.22am on Friday, the London fire brigade (LFB) said.
Residents were earlier asked to keep doors and windows closed due to the significant amount of smoke produced by the fire.
The LFB said it used three ladders, including the tallest in Europe at 64 metres (210ft), as towers to distribute water evenly and extinguish the blaze.
The National Churches Trust had listed St Mark’s as a grade II Victorian church, describing it as an “architectural and historical treasure” which finished construction between 1846 and 1847. It contained “stunning” mosaics by the Italian Salviati family as well as highly decorative marble flooring in the chancel, with the overall Gothic-styled design the work of the architect Thomas Cundy Jr.
