Re: Dogs!
In my family, blackberry cake is a thing. There are competing recipes, long tradition and rivalries over who makes the best blackberry cake, aside from Joan Litteral who I think everyone agrees is the standard we all strive for. I'm quite the heretic because I put chocolate icing on mine. I have no shame.
Friday night I came home from work and using the blackberries fresh picked from my own backyard made a wonderful blackberry cake. I didn't have many berries and I just made a little 8x8 cake, halving the recipe in my grandmother's own hand I have. Then I went to take a shower.
As I got out of the shower, I heard a crash in the front of the house and rushed out to find Root Beer sitting on the bed with her best "Don't look at me" look on her face. Making my way to the dining room, I found Biscuit sitting next to the pan, every crumb of the cake gone, icing still on her nose, wearing her "It was the cat" look.
We don't have a cat.
Saturday at the Evans Family Reunion, while the normally well behaved Root Beer made a right pest of herself barking at the other dogs, drowning out the music and such, bad girl Biscuit charmed the crowd so much that no one even cared when she started knocking over beer cans to help her self to some suds to wash down the cake.
After she got to taste just a morsel of Aunt Joan's recipe she told me Sandy Littteral made it better and everyone else is right, if you can't make caramel icing you can't really make blackberry cake. Irene's recipe or not.

Re: Dogs!
I’ve had a couple of dogs who stole steaks right off the grill. I had one who nabbed the Thanksgiving turkey off the dining room table as I was in the kitchen getting the stuffing (and my useless guests gaped in astonishment). I even had a dog who would be SUCH a good boy if only you’d give him some rice.
But I never did have a little dog who scarfed a whole cake!

Re: Dogs!
I posted elsewhere that most of my interactions are with Ted since I began working from home. "He is always at my side and very goofy. But now, he's mostly napping in the yard, enjoying the sun. He is 12 -13 years old, clearly in his end time. We have a visit to the vet on Tuesday to see how we can better help him. "
About napping in the yard - my backyard is basically a bamboo jungle. It's very hard to reach him if he doesn't want to come to the house. I have to crawl to him to avoid falling and being stabbed by bamboo shoots.
We won't make it to the vet. And not much can be done b/c of his blood disorder. He doesn't seem to be in pain, but he is extremely weak. I tried to get him to come to me by dangling the keys and telling him we can go for a ride. He ignored me. So tonight I cleaned myself up, slung my purse over my shoulder, and walked to the car to open his door while dangling the car key. That did it! He got up and walked to the car. I helped him into the car. We drove around the neighborhood for awhile. Most of the time he laid on the back seat, but he also sat up and hung out the window. Then it rained, and he enjoyed hanging out of the window in the rain.
When we returned, he was obviously happy about the trip. But I leashed him before he could return the bamboo jungle in my backyard. I brought him into the house where I had set up a bed and food & water in the living room, He rejected it. He went up the 3 stairs to lie down by my bedroom, as he has done for more than 7 years.

You can't wait until life isn't hard anymore before you decide to be happy.

Lani and Ted - I hope he eats and drinks something soon. I'm so glad you were able to get him into the car for a nice ride. Sounds like he enjoyed that.

It's so hard, but somewhere I read
"Better one day too early, than one hour too late."
I was (somewhat) lucky with my Miniature Schnauzer last November: I knew, after some advanced imaging with a specialist vet exactly what was going on inside of Rion, he ate his breakfast like his normal self, I went out to run a quick errand, and when I got back it was obvious that something major had happened internally. The specialist warned me that he would either quit eating or the tumor would rupture. When it happened, it was quite obvious. He had his last vet visit a few hours later.

So sorry, Lani.
