Re: Weather Alerts
Our rainy season has been unbelievably dry and hot. The pool was so warm, it was like taking a hot bath. Thankfully we just had one heckuva storm move through and not only has the pool cooled off, it's full again.

Freak hailstorm hits Guadalajara, Mexico, swallowing buildings and cars
GUADALAJARA, Mexico -- Guadalajara had been enjoying a sweaty summer for the past few weeks until the weekend brought a surprise.
People woke up Sunday morning to more than three feet of ice after a heavy hailstorm swept through the region.
As government officials scrambled to contain the damage and clear up roads, residents captured jaw-dropping footage of vehicles and buildings swallowed by ice.
Jalisco Governor Enrique Alfaro Ramirez said he'd never witnessed scenes like those he saw Sunday morning.
"Hail more than a meter high, and then we wonder if climate change exists," he said on Twitter.
The government of Jalisco has been working with the Mexican Army and local authorities to remove the hail from the roads and provide support for those whose homes were impacted by the freak hailstorm.

Mr. Timmer seems a tad concerned.
Arkansas and western Tennessee are getting significant rain now that will drain into the Mississippi.
Saturday may be very bad for Louisiana.

Latest river gauge data from southeastern LA is alarming to say the least, and a sign of the hydrological disaster ahead with Tropical Cyclone Barry. River flooding, 12"+ of rainfall, existing water load from upstream, and storm surge flooding combined. NO levee can hold to 20'!!

Re: Weather Alerts
Our rain just started (thank god...101 today with heat index of 112) and they're predicting 8-10" here. That might mean 2" or 20" though. The 7.9" in NOLA in about 3 hours was totally unexpected.
And NOLA's fucked up catch basins are just as much at fault as the pumps are when they're working.

TS Barry-
https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/text/refresh/M ... 1453.shtml?
https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/text/refresh/M ... 1453.shtml?
Key Messages:
1. Barry is expected to bring storm surge, rainfall, and wind
hazards to the central Gulf Coast during the next several days.
2. There is a danger of life-threatening storm surge inundation
along the coast of southern and southeastern Louisiana where a Storm
Surge Warning has been issued. The highest storm surge inundation is
expected between the Mouth of the Atchafalaya River and Shell Beach.
Residents in these areas should listen to any advice given by local
officials.
3. A Tropical Storm Warning and Hurricane Watch are in effect for
much of the Louisiana coast and additional watches and warnings
could be required later today. Residents in these areas should
ensure they have their hurricane plan in place.
4. The slow movement of this system will result in a long duration
heavy rainfall threat along the central Gulf Coast and inland
through the lower Mississippi Valley through the weekend and
potentially into early next week. Flash flooding and river flooding
will become increasingly likely, some of which may be significant,
especially along and east of the track of the system.

New Orleans May Face an Unprecedented Weather Situation This Weekend
https://slate.com/business/2019/07/new- ... ekend.html
https://slate.com/business/2019/07/new- ... ekend.html
Hurricane Katrina, for example, sent 13 feet of surge up the Mississippi, but the river was at just 3 feet above sea level before the storm. Today it is at 16 feet. Katrina’s damage came from the north, and that’s where the bulk of the reinforcements have been made since the catastrophic levee failures of September 2005 killed more than 1,400 people.
Fortunately, Barry will not be a Katrina-sized storm. Still, it poses a test. The river levees are built to withstand storm surge, but on the assumption that tropical storms would only coincide with a river eight feet high, half its current height. With the river above 16 feet, even a small surge is a frightening possibility.
As I wrote last month, the Mississippi River in New Orleans has never been so high for so long, which poses risks to infrastructure and navigation. At the time, I thought, the odds of a hurricane storm surge coinciding with the lingering high water were slim. The subhead of my story asked a provocative question: “When will the Mississippi River come for New Orleans?” The answer, it turns out, might be this weekend.
Why is the river so high? In part because of years of intense civil engineering work that has penned in its course, slowing its path to the Gulf, stacking up sediment, and eliminating natural floodplains. Climate change is also likely a factor in the exceptionally rainy year further north that has engorged the river.

Rescue underway in Terrebonne Parish as dozen people are trapped

When they tell you to evacuate you really should do so.The U.S. Coast Guard has a mission underway to rescue 12 people trapped in Terrebonne Parish, an area that is forecast to be hit hard by Tropical Storm Barry, according to a WWL-TV report.
The dozen people who need to be rescued are on the Isle de Jean Charles, the report said. That area is about 45 minutes from Houma, and the one road into the community is impassable, the Coast Guard said.
