Grad school search

#1

Post by Chilidog »

So, I've posted before about my son's college search and his quest to become a professional biologist.

Last May, he graduated with honors from Augustana College with a BA in Biology and German. His initial plan was to find a Graduate Assistantships program focused on ecology, conservation, and either birds or reptiles.

Unfortunately, with some of the Covid restrictions, there weren't too many positions open.

So he took a temp job at a hospital as a patient transporter while continuing to look for and apply for any open positions.

I've been helping him organize and track his applications letters. Finally his search has started to pay off.

He's made the first cut on two really good positions, interviewed with the professors and in one case, submitted the a formal application to the school.

There are different good and bad to both, academically speaking. Financially, the programs are about equal.

The two schools are TCU in Ft. Worth, TX and Towson University outside Baltimore, MD.

The TCU professor wants him on board, but has to get the funding approved by the Grad committee.

Towson is a little less certain, but he feels he has a better than 50% chance of getting the offer.

We shall see. It's his choice, but I feel every bit of the anxiety.

I have a good friend who graduated from The University of Texas @ Austin who always says if he had it to do all over again, he'd have gone to TCU and found a rich girl there to marry. So, there's that.

Well, fingers crossed! I recall how anxious that time can be, esp when you hear 'we are trying to get the funding'.

Through the pandemic I have been getting a craving to go back to school and get a grad degree, but gah it is an overwhelming process!

Well it looks like Austin Peay It is.

There appears to have been a funding issue at TCU.

And the others didn't pan out.

On the other hand, the chili pup has developed a good connection with the professor at Austin Peay. I think this will be a good fit for him.

That's a good city to live in, it has a little bit of everything, and a short drive or long boat ride to LBL or Big Sandy (massive wildlife and water rec areas).
