Yeah, I've heard that. Doesn't change the fact that I prefer ketchup and onions.

I did live my first 13½ years in Wisconsin. That said, my parents were of Norwegian descent, not German, which probably accounts for the difference.

I put spicy brown mustard on 'em. And I grill the bun for a few seconds until it turns a little brown.

Even better is if you boil them with onions in a mixture of pilsner beer and butter before grilling them. Then top with the onions you boiled them with and whatever kind of mustard suits your fancy (I also like spicy brown Dusseldorf mustard). That's the Wisconsin way.

One thing I learned somewhere along the way is that you actually want your kraut from a jar or a can.

The kraut in plastic bags has 'stuff' added to help it last longer (even refrigerated).

And my grandmother always used Silver Floss from a can.

That's my story and I'm sticking with it.

Having said that, putting anything on lutefisk would improve it.

As a Chicago native of polish descent, whose mother used to make sauerkrout in the basement refrigerator, I can assure you that the Cleveland brand krouts are pretty damned good. They have a traditional caraway version if you want to get picky.
