Well I’m shocked and not shocked.
But definitely saddened and angered.

Re: TX Anti-Abortion Law
Hard day for me at work. Had to deal with anti-vaxers yelling "my body my choice" while women in Texas lost their choice....
Also it reminds me of when I was young & couldn't get the pill unless you were married. And even then, only for a limited time. Had to use something else during a break from the pill. Then finally every woman could get the pill if you found a non-misogynist doctor. As a young bride, I relied on Planned Parenthood for healthcare including birth control. After Roe, my local Planned Parenthood was under attack, and I'd call to say that I love them. I joined with others to provide safety for patients 24/hrs a day. Although I moved, I continued to support PP by safely escorting women into the building.
I thought this was over. I was wrong.
And here we are.

Re: TX Anti-Abortion Law
My user name may explain this, but I can’t see how the content of this law can in any way whatsoever be considered constitutional. As others with more knowledge have pointed out, if it is allowed to stand equivalent laws could be enacted covering any activity a given legislature wish to attempt to curtail. I’m stunned and appalled.
Snark - do the Texas legislators have shares in the morning after pill?

Re: TX Anti-Abortion Law
SCOTUS seems to be fine with it, so it is Constitutional. I still have some hope, but not much. Maybe I'll feel better tomorrow. (Doubt it.)
The US won't even affirm equality for women. "Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex." I was very involved in the movement, and I had police protection for awhile because I was threatened and stalked.
Don't underestimate what is happening.

From the WaPo…

Never mind the Fifth Amendment,… the rational is that it’s not the Govt putting someone in double jeopardy.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/outlook/ ... -lawsuits/
So a Doctor who gets found guilty can be sued again and again by multiple parties ad infinitum. But S.B. 8’s malice does not stop there. Once abortion providers and supporters are dragged into state courts, S.B. 8 then changes the courthouse rules to make these lawsuits as costly and burdensome as possible. For instance, S.B. 8 allows suits to be brought in any of Texas’s 254 counties and bars the courts from transferring the case to a more appropriate location. A physician who provides abortions in El Paso, for example, might have to fly across the state to Houston to defend themselves against an ideologue or stranger looking to force them to stop. If the vigilante prevails, they get their costs and attorney’s fees covered — but if abortion providers and assisters successfully defend themselves, they have to swallow all of their litigation costs. The law also allows abortion providers to be sued multiple times over a single abortion, while prohibiting them from defending on the ground that another court already found in their favor.

Re: TX Anti-Abortion Law
Well, SCOTUS has specifically said they are not ruling on its constitutionality at this point, basically punting by saying 'it is complicated, we need more time, so it is ok for now'. But with that nasty little 'court cases do not count unless they are SCOTUS' clause, the conservative wing bought time.. and time is what they need to get more states to pass such laws. Since a big part of their argument is 'this is not doing any harm', that gives them a chance to twist the numbers to 'prove' the restrictions are not an 'undue burden'.
For a party that thinks very short term, they are surprisingly good at long term political planning.
Re: TX Anti-Abortion Law
SCOTUS' increased use of the shadow docket (i.e., deciding major cases as emergency applications) also is concerning.
But perhaps SCOTUS would like to the state courts first to have a pass at whittling away the unconstitutional parts/see if there are provisions that violate state constitutional/decisional law.

Re: TX Anti-Abortion Law
I think it goes hand in hand with the increasingly popular political tactic of passing unconstitutional laws that have little chance of surviving scrutiny but are big base pleasers.

I've bookmarked it and set a reminder with Alexa to submit one a day, starting with one last night. I didn't know if my ISP would get profiled if I was too prolific. Since I'm not from Tx, I don't know the best tactics. Could vague suggestions be submitted here, or would that violate TOS?Patagoniagirl wrote: ↑Thu Sep 02, 2021 9:51 am TX anon tip site article with links. Make it hurt.

But now that I think of it, I'm off to the vet with my two cresties. If I use their Wifi, i'd have a different ISP, yes?

I wonder if they are actually checking though, does one even have to be a resident of TX to bring a lawsuit? Much less give a tip. But it would be an easy way for them to filter out some garbage for sure.

I’ll look back into the VPN thing. I had it once but my regular bookmarks (banks, credit cards) didn’t like it, thinking I was a hacker so I had to jump thru extra hoops to get in.
In the meantime, I can still spam the shit out of them.

But I should’ve been more clear initially. Who, what, where should I make accusations? Do I need to name names, clinics, elected Republican officials? I don’t want to cause more grief for Planned Parenthood. Maybe some whack job RW targets?

Speaker Pelosi on the Texas abortion ruling: "This ban necessitates codifying Roe v. Wade.
"Upon our return, the House will bring up Congresswoman Judy Chu's Women’s Health Protection Act to enshrine into law reproductive health care for all women across America."

Re: TX Anti-Abortion Law
It took Trump's actions on the pandemic to turn my Republican sister into a Biden voter. I wonder if Texas' and the Supreme Court's actions will similarly affect Republican women who support abortion choice.
