These people can't keep their conspiracies straight. They've been saying for years that it's been an actor playing the part of Biden because he's dead or in a basement or on Mars or something. Just like he's both incompetent and the brains behind a complicated criminal network.

His situation was unique, but not without some historical parallels.

Executive summary: Biden is the first elected president to drop out while seeking a second full term.

Ascended presidents who didn't stand in a second full-term election (for whatever reason): LBJ, Truman,* Teddy, [known usurper] Arthur, the other Johnson, Fillmore, and Tyler.

Elected presidents who didn't stand in a second full-term election: Hayes, Buchanan, Pierce, and Polk.

Hayes, Buchanan, and Polk just didn't run; Pierce ran but didn't get the nomination (so he wasn't in the general election).

Edit: * As Foogy cheekily notes, Truman ascended, won his first election, but basically didn't seek a second full term. At 68, Truman in 1952 was considered too old with failing abilities.

I know I was a kid at the time, but I don't recall anyone demanding Johnson resign when he decided not to seek election.

There were protests aimed at him every day.

It is true however, that nobody wanted him to turnover the reigns to Hubert early. Humphrey was a very non-charismatic non-entity that would have made a lousy president (but he would have been better than Nixon).

Release of 32-year-old American from Russia secured as part of largest East-West prisoner swap since Cold War

Russia freed wrongly convicted Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich as part of the largest and most complex East-West prisoner swap since the Cold War, in which he and more than a dozen others jailed by the Kremlin were exchanged for Russians held in the U.S. and Europe, including a convicted murderer.

Moscow also released former Marine Paul Whelan, journalist Alsu Kurmasheva and Vladimir Kara-Murza, a British-Russian dissident and Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist, sentenced to 25 years in prison on treason-related charges. Russia also released a number of political dissidents.

The sweeping deal involved 24 prisoners and at least six countries, and came together after months of negotiations at the highest levels of governments in the U.S., Russia and Germany, whose prisoner, Russian hit man Vadim Krasikov, emerged as the linchpin to the arrangement.

Biden—about an hour before he notified the world he was dropping out of the presidential race on July 21—called the prime minister of Slovenia, whose country was contributing two convicted Russian spies to the swap, to secure the pardon necessary for the deal to proceed. CIA Director William Burns traveled to Turkey last week to meet his counterpart there and finalize the logistics for the swap.
