Whatever happened to Breitbart? The insurgent star of the right is in a long, slow fade ...

Since Trump became president, monthly traffic has virtually collapsed, plummeting nearly 75 percent. Aggressive conservative competitors have zoomed past it. At the same time, it faces a double financial whammy: the loss of its biggest donor and an ad boycott launched by a liberal group that continues to erode its revenue.

And Bannon, once the driving force behind its insurgent editorial focus, is long gone, forced out early last year, a few months after Trump forced him out of the White House.

As the 2020 campaign begins to heat up, Breitbart is still a reliable Trump ally, with a familiar set of enemies (freshman Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) is a popular target) and themes (anti-immigration, pro-economic nationalism, skepticism of multiculturalism).

Breitbart’s monthly traffic bottomed out at 4.6 million unique visitors in May, down from 17.3 million at the start of 2017, according to Comscore, a digital tracking firm.

Daily Caller: One America News Network Demands Retraction From MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow, The Daily Beast:
One America News Network (OANN) demanded retractions from MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow and The Daily Beast’s Kevin Poulsen after both suggested links between the network and Russian propaganda.

Poulsen wrote an article stating OANN’s Kristian Rouz is a “Russian national on the payroll of the Kremlin’s official propaganda outlet, Sputnik.” That same day, Maddow said on “The Rachel Maddow Show” that OANN “really, literally is Russian propaganda.”

Rouz does write for Sputnik, a Russian government-owned news outlet. He has “never had decision-making authority with respect to the content that is aired on OAN,” one cease-and-desist letter, dated July 25, reads.

“His outside work for other media outlets has no relation to — or bearing on — his work for OAN,” the letter stated.

Poulsen’s article quoted former FBI agent Clint Watts, who suggested OANN employing Rouz means the outlet has merged with “Russian state-sponsored propaganda.”

“This is vile, sensationalistic reporting,” Miller wrote in a press release. “These defamatory statements must be retracted immediately. One America News Network has no connection to the Russian government or any other government — no connection whatsoever, financial or otherwise.”

OANN’s lawyers have given Maddow and The Daily Beast until Aug. 15 to retract its statements, according to the cease-and-desist requests.

Maddow didn't say anything about the Kremlin paid reporter making editorial decisions at Trump's new favorite network. She didn't need to. Good luck fighting the army of lawyers NBC will bring to the fight.

Received an email today shortly before 5 p.m. from the WH: as of Monday afternoon my press pass is suspended for 30 days.
Edit to add, https://www.washingtonpost.com/arts-ent ... 9230eb2e15
Brian Karem, the chief White House correspondent for Playboy magazine, said Friday that his press pass is being suspended for 30 days in what he called an “anti-First Amendment move.”

The suspension will begin Monday, Karem said. In an interview late Friday, he said the White House told him the suspension was related to his actions in the Rose Garden nearly a month ago, where he infamously sparred with former White House aide Sebastian Gorka.

The White House wrote that Karem “failed to abide by basic norms of decorum and order” on July 11, Karem said. The letter further suggested that Karem had been rude to Gorka — “a guest of the president.”

But Karem told The Washington Post he thinks the move was retaliation by the White House for his tough questioning of President Trump. He said his attorney will appeal the suspension Monday.

CNN hires former acting FBI chief Andrew McCabe, drawing fire from Trump’s son, campaign and others

CNN announced Friday that it had hired former FBI acting director Andrew McCabe as a contributor, drawing a swift backlash from conservatives, including President Trump’s eldest son and a representative of Trump’s reelection campaign.

McCabe, who authorized an investigation into Trump for alleged ties to Russia and possible obstruction of justice, was fired in March 2018 after the Justice Department inspector general found he made an unauthorized disclosure to the media and lied to investigators about it.

Earlier this month, McCabe filed a lawsuit against the FBI and the Justice Department, alleging that he was illegally demoted and fired as part of a plot by Trump to remove those who were not politically loyal to him.

Allies of Trump seized on McCabe’s hiring Friday to take aim at CNN, a news organization that the president has repeatedly denigrated as “fake news.”

ThinkProgress, a Top Progressive News Site, Has Shut Down

https://www.thedailybeast.com/thinkprog ... tting-down
ThinkProgress, the influential news site that rose to prominence in the shadow of the Bush administration and helped define progressivism during the Obama years, is shutting down.

The outlet, which served as an editorially independent project of the Democratic Party think tank Center for American Progress, will stop current operations on Friday and be converted into a site where CAP scholars can post. Top officials at CAP had been searching for a buyer to take over ThinkProgress, which has run deficits for years, and according to sources there were potentially three serious buyers in the mix recently. But in a statement to staff, Navin Nayak, the executive director of the Center for American Progress Action Fund, said the site was ultimately unable to secure a patron.

“Given that we could find no new publisher, we have no other real option but to fold the ThinkProgress website back into CAP’s broader online presence with a focus on analysis of policy, politics, and news events through the lens of existing CAP and CAP Action staff experts,” said Nayak. “Conversations on how to do so are just beginning, but we will seek to reinvent it as a different platform for progressive change.”

A dozen ThinkProgress employees will be losing their jobs, a CAP aide said, as many who were on staff had already gone to work elsewhere and some were incorporated into the larger CAP infrastructure. Those who are being laid off will be given a severance package that runs through the end of November and health care coverage that lasts through the year, said the CAP aide.

Law & Crime: Conservative Network Files $10M Defamation Lawsuit Against Rachel Maddow, MSNBC:
The owner of right-leaning cable news channel One America News Network (OANN) has filed a defamation lawsuit against Rachel Maddow and others claiming that the 46-year-old liberal commentator “maliciously and recklessly” smeared the network as a Russian state propaganda outlet.

In a press release obtained by Law&Crime, attorneys for OANN’s owner Herrring Networks, Inc. said they filed a $10 million defamation lawsuit against Maddow, Comcast Corporation, NBC Universal and MSNBC in a California federal court [in San Diego, i.e., S.D. Cal.].

* * *

Maddow apparently responded in turn, defending her own network’s owners by blasting OANN and telling her own audience the right-wing network “really literally is paid Russian propaganda.” As you can see, the plaintiff claimed that counsel for NBC Universal said in a letter that by “literally” Maddow meant “not being literally true.” This was apparently part of the response to an OANN retraction demand.

* * *

Attorney Skip Miller[* representing OANN] is a partner with Miller Barondess, LLP in Los Angeles.

In comments obtained by Law&Crime, Miller reiterated the anti-factual nature of Maddow’s Russian jab at the right-wing network.

“One America is wholly owned, operated and financed by the Herring family in San Diego,” Miller said. “They are as American as apple pie. They are not paid by Russia and have nothing to do with the Russian government. This is a false and malicious libel, and they’re going to answer for it in a court of law.”
OANN's complaint.

* Perhaps Stern knows more, but Miller (UCLA law grad) is no Klayman.

Miller is considered a tough, hard nosed, competent litigator, but he has had his own disciplinary problems: https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm ... story.html

Whatever his problems, he is no Klayman. On the other hand, this lawsuit that he has filed will face a withering anti-SLAPP motion.
