GOP Rep. Chris Collins' insider-trading arrest puts a deep-red seat on the House battlefield

Republican Rep. Chris Collins' arrest and indictment on insider trading charges Wednesday suddenly makes his safe red congressional district a lot more interesting in November's midterm elections.

The New York 27th District, lodged between Buffalo and Rochester in the western part of the state, has grown more Republican since Collins first won it narrowly in 2012. The area backed President Donald Trump by nearly 25 percentage points in 2016, while Collins breezed to re-election with about 67 percent of the vote.

The stain of the insider-trading accusations quickly makes the district more competitive — although it still favors Republicans. Regardless, the GOP cannot afford another contested seat in the state as it fights to stop Democrats from winning the 23 Republican-held seats the party needs to take a House majority.

Nonpartisan election analysis site Cook Political Report moved its rating for the district to "likely" Republican from "solid" Republican on Wednesday. A scandal can cause a 10- to 12-percentage-point swing and Collins' arrest is "perhaps on the more severe side," tweeted Nate Silver, data guru and editor in chief of analytics site FiveThirtyEight.

Liberals seized on the news of Collins' arrest almost immediately. The New York Working Families Party started to raise money for the Democratic candidate in the race, Grand Island Town Supervisor Nate McMurray. The party said "we can defeat this corrupt Trump Republican and win this seat in November." Collins was Trump's first supporter in Congress during the 2016 campaign.

Rochester Democrat and Chronicle
Collins opponent: It's 'about right versus wrong; who is honest, who is dishonest' ...

Nate McMurray, the Democratic candidate for the 27th Congressional District, said his disappointment in the recent arrest of his Republican opponent U.S. Rep. Christopher Collins, "turned to anger" after Collins spoke to media Wednesday night.

"People now understand that we're going to win," said McMurray, currently the town supervisor of Grand Island in Erie County.

He spoke, flanked by supporters, at a late morning news conference at the New York State United Teachers headquarters on North Union Street. ...

McMurray said when news broke about the arrests, he didn't want to gloat or take joy in the misfortune of others, but said he felt Rep. Collins was more concerned about his family and friends than those who elected him to the post.

In short, McMurray likened the allegations of insider trading to a student who cheats on a test. "If you get the answers in advance, it's cheating," he said. "He doesn't think the rules apply to him."

In the past 24 hours, McMurray said tens of thousands of dollars have been donated to his campaign, and that the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee reached out to partner with McMurray's team, already in place.

Rep. Chris Collins, fighting prosecution, seeks to end reelection bid

Rep. Chris Collins (R-N.Y.), who was charged this week as part of an insider trading scheme, is suspending his re-election campaign and will attempt to remove his name from the ballot.

The third-term congressman announced the decision Saturday morning on Twitter, just days after he vowed to clear his name and remain on the ballot.

Collins is facing multiple counts of securities fraud, as well as charges of wire fraud and lying to investigators. His son and another associate were charged in the scheme as well.

Federal prosecutors allege Collins — who sits on the board of an Australian pharmaceutical company — shared non-public details about the failure of a multiple sclerosis drug in clinical trials. Using that information, Collins’ family members were able to sell off shares and avoid more than $760,000 in losses, prosecutors say.

Collins, the first member of congress to endorse President Donald Trump in 2016, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Mychajliw says he's running for Collins' congressional seat

Erie County Comptroller Stefan I. Mychajliw says he's running for the 27th Congressional seat now that embattled Congressman Chris Collins is stepping aside.

Mychajliw released a statement shortly after 11 a.m. Saturday that read, in part:

"This has been a sad and difficult week for NY27. I respect Congressman Collins' decision and I than him for his decade of public service and I wish him and his family the best during the difficult days ahead."

Calling himself a "proud Republican and conservative supporter of President Trump," Mychajliw said he will "work to earn the support of the county chairs of the Republican nomination for the 27th Congressional district."

Yeah, than you very much. How do you pronounce Mychajliw, or can I just call you Than Man?

"Oh, Mister Than Man,
Thend me a dream!
Make him the cutetht,

Collins' Exit Sends New York Republicans Scrambling to Find Replacement

Rep. Chris Collins’ decision to suspend his re-election campaign following his recent indictment on insider trading charges has upended the race for his Western New York seat, and Republicans in the area are scrambling to determine their next steps.

Two GOP county chairmen said Saturday they expected Collins’ name to be removed from the 27th District ballot. The Republican chairs for the eight counties in the district are expected to meet early next week, potentially on Tuesday, to pick a new nominee.

According to the chairmen and GOP consultant Michael Caputo, Republican candidates were coming out of the woodwork to express their interest in the seat.

Those interested in the race so far include: Erie County Comptroller Stefan Mychajliw; state Assemblymen David DiPietro, Stephen Hawley and Ray Walter; state Sen. Pat Gallivan, a former Erie County sheriff; and David Bellavia, an Iraq War veteran and local radio host. And the list of potential GOP hopefuls was expected to grow.

Carl Paladino Announces His Bid For Congress

Carl Paladino, a Buffalo real estate developer and big Donald Trump supporter, announced Saturday that he intends to run for Congress in New York’s 27th district. The seat is being vacated by Rep. Chris Collins (R-N.Y.), who was arrested on charges of insider trading last week.

Paladino is basically Buffalo’s version of Trump ― loud, into real estate, conservative and known for offending people.

Paladino was co-chair of Trump’s presidential campaign in New York. He most recently served on the Buffalo school board until the state education commissioner kicked him off in August 2017 for revealing confidential information about negotiations with the city’s teachers union.

But members of the school board had previously voted for him to leave after he made racist comments in response to a local newspaper’s questionnaire about what he would like to see happen in 2017. Paladino said he’d like President Barack Obama to die from mad cow disease and called first lady Michelle Obama a man who should go live with gorillas.

House seat suddenly in play after Trump backer's indictment

HAMBURG, N.Y. (AP) — New York's most conservative congressional district is unexpectedly in play as Republican incumbent Chris Collins, one of President Donald Trump's first supporters, fights insider trading charges while seeking re-election.

Republican leaders in a western New York district that Trump swept overwhelmingly in 2016 are counting on party and presidential loyalty, even if it means voting for someone that even they wanted off the ballot.

"This district is Trump country, and it will continue to be," said Erie County Republican Party Chairman Nicholas Langworthy. "It's a conservative Republican district, and I expect that when the dust settles on election night it will re-elect a conservative Republican to the seat."

Democratic challenger Nate McMurray is still the underdog but says his volunteers and donations have surged since Collins was charged in August, and his crowds have gone from handfuls to hundreds.

"It's like an avalanche that started out with a little snowball that's rolling downhill and getting bigger and bigger every day," McMurray, a Grand Island town supervisor, said recently to a roomful of supporters. They included Tom Perez, the Democratic National Committee chairman, who dropped in to drum up enthusiasm in what had been a little-watched race.

Good morning from New York.

Pretrial conference in the insider-trading case against Rep. Chris Collins, on the heels of a ruling rejecting multiple motions argued at the last hearing.

I'm covering it live starting at 10:30 a.m. EST for @CourthouseNews.

How does this work now? Does he have to resign his seat, or carry on until jail time?

I'd forgotten this:
Collins (R) was the first sitting U.S. Representative to endorse Donald Trump for President of the United States, and he served on Trump's presidential transition team.

Another one angling for a pardon. A normal analysis would say a guy in BendictDonald's position wouldn't dare pardon this guy now, but the President* is so off the rails now, anything is possible.

I am seeing multiple reports of a resignation prior to tomorrow's guilty plea.
