Does this mean there will be vigilantes staked out at PP? Taking down license plates, following people?

Start by suing every legislator plus Abbot that has supported lax gun laws that have resulted in harm to pregnant women.

See how long before the law is amended.

That is exactly what it means. Citizen enforcers. Private attorneys general. The law was deliberately written to exclude state officials from the means of enforcement so it couldn't be enjoined.

However, in the back of my mind I wonder whether the Supremes let the petition expire because there was not yet a live case or controversy. When an abortion vigilante brings a lawsuit against a slut who wants an abortion, then there will be. What do other lawyers here think?

Yes. Plus the persons who paid for her PAP tests and according to the law, anyone who knew of or assisted her to get an abortion.

In my opinion, guys who get women pregnant should be the first targets of the law. If she wasn't pregnant, she couldn't get an abortion.

I agree with that. Also Viagra and those folks, enablers.

 with this lax wording of "suspicion" how about targetting wives of lawmakers or TX government with a law suit. Let them fight for it to get dismissed...

Kinda win-win, the way the law works is plaintiffs are entitled to attorney fees in addition to the $10k, defendants... aren't. Even when they prevail, it is specifically excluded.

Leaving aside the fact that this “law” is aimed at abortions, are there any similar precedents?

There should be an army of spies following the wives, daughters, relatives, and friends of RWNJs. We all know that they get abortions for themselves. Many, many examples.

I heard this on MSNBC, so maybe not correct: if the "accused" woman and/or her enablers ( uber driver, friend, abortion clinic personnel, etc.), win in court, they don't get a penny from the accuser. Plus they will have a big legal bill. This law is written to urge on vigilantes.

I think it will also lead to killing, given the universal availabilty of guns in Texas. No problem if sluts wanting abortions are killed.

True, accusers get $10k + legal fees if they win, defendants get bupkis if they win, they are specifically excluded from collecting even legal fees.

No, the law specifically prohibits that.

Of course, that means that someone could sue every Republican legislator or her husband on suspicion of taking his child-bearing age wife or daughter to get an abortion without having to worry about countersuit...

No, Patagoniagirl is correct. The law specifically allows that exact outcome.

Then perhaps those cases should be the first off the rank...

An abusive law such as this should have the abuse fall first on those who make it happen.

Since this abomination finally became law, my Third Grandma, TRL, whom I know is a huge women's rights advocate has yet to post anything. I have little doubt that it's because she's trying to clam herself down, and when she does I expect a profound post that will be laced with enough profanities that will make even our beloved Sugar Magnolia blush :smoking:
