So do the trash pickup trucks.

Trash guy had better rain gear than the water guy.

We were in the calm of the eye for about half an hour. Now on the dry side of the storm but with high wind gusts.

Having been thwarted by the rain yesterday our lawn guys came this morning.

The good news is that all the leaves and small branches that came down yesterday are gone.

The PNW seafood industry is getting hammered by high temperatures and low rainfall.

Here on the North Fork the water temperatures are now 70F.

That matters because lobsters don't do well at temperatures above 68F. The once thriving inshore lobster fisheries of LI and southern New England are pretty much a thing of the past. :( The lobsters have moved north.

Our little Unitarian Universalist Fellowship which meets in the 1731 Meeting House here in our hamlet may be in trouble. Our once a month visiting minister is relocating and will be unavailable. The long time president is stepping down. The long time treasurer (a founding member of the group 40 years ago) died suddenly two weeks ago. :(

After her memorial service this past Sunday there was a congregational meeting to chart a path forward. Might merge with the Southold UU Church to our east if they will have us. Might attend the minister's new church via Zoom.

Much to think about.

Here is a fun little UU group from Canada I follow for the humor. However I know they have links to many UU resources.

Today and yesterday have been hot and muggy (by NF standards).

Our daughter (and her husband) are big women's soccer fans. Since our daughter got here we have watched several of the EURO 2020 men's matches and the Houston Dash NWSL games.

There is a Dash match tonight so Mrs. V. and our daughter are over at one of the cousin's cottages now playing games that they otherwise would play tonight probably roping me in as well.

The Dash have had an uneven season so far complicated by having some of their best players being away in the countries of their birth getting ready for the Olympics.

My observation on the difference between men's and women's matches is that the men run faster while the women's play is more subtle and interesting.

One other observation, when the men make contact with the opposing players they fall down, grab their knees or ankles and grimace in pain in order to get fouls called. The officials are wise to this and it rarely works.

Women players don't do much of this so if a woman does down and doesn't get up chances are she is hurt.

International Men's Football needs to add a best actor award to its honors. ;)

The loud cheering those of you in the NF area may have heard 30 minutes ago was due to the Dash beating the NC Courage 2 to 1. The Dash have never before beaten or even tied the Courage.

This win moves the Dash from 7th place to 4th place in league standings .

Our fire department parade starts in 5 minutes. Mrs. V., our daughter and one of Mrs. V's cousins have gone over to watch.

I'm skipping it this year because my balance is not great just now.

However it is not far so I can hear everything from the comfort of the porch.

This weekend Mrs.V. has a music event near Boston so we will be visiting my cousin on Cape Cod. Taking the noon ferry to New London tomorrow.

There's the police car siren which leads the parade!

Now the fire trucks have joined in. Half of the fire trucks on the North Fork and some from the South Fork are here.

Someone who heard this and didn't know what was going on might fear some terrible disaster had happened.

The bell lyre and drum band has started playing. Ting, ting, ting, thump, thump, thump.

Some loud horns which are likely the snow plows we passed on the road earlier this evening.

A really weird siren now. Perhaps space aliens have landed. :?

Another group of drums now.

The front of the parade is now on the main road so I am hearing it from two directions.

Soon the community center lawn will be full of beer drinking fire fighters. (They are bussed here and will be bussed home.)

The fire trucks leave as soon as they reach the center to minimize the time when they are not at their home station.

During all this there is a constant low rumble from the trucks' engines.

Something very noisy just started up. Not sure what it is but it would benefit from a new muffler. ;)

Getting quieter now. Most of the fire trucks have moved forward and the floats, local beauty queens and politicians come next. Then the antique farm tractors. Then the classic cars.

Now getting some sprinkles of rain as the LIRR evening train to Greenport briefly stops new paraders from crossing the track.

All the paraders stage just south of the track on the roads around our Circle. They then head north across the track.

JAWS!

My cousin on Cape Cod told me that local noncommercial lobster fishers have been prevented from going out due to sharks.
