Watch: Here’s how ‘peaceful’ anti-lockdown protest in Dublin turned violent
Emma Costello

An anti-lockdown protest organised for Saturday afternoon in Dublin’s city centre had been shared online as a ‘peaceful march’.

Hundreds were expected to attend at 2pm, and in response An Garda Siochana called on the Office of Public Works to shut down St Stephen’s Green.

As the hour approached, Gardai set up barriers around the road surrounding the public park.

A video obtained by Extra.ie shows the beginning of the demonstration, with protesters hurling offensive language towards Gardai as the force called for back-up.

As the minutes passed, things began to heat up as some members of the crowd began to lift barriers.

Gardai attempted to control the crowd and move them further down Grafton Street. As things seemed to be settling down, a man approached Gardai with what appeared to be a firework in hand.

Holding the explosive above his head, the man made his way through the crowd of protesters with the ‘firework’ directed towards members of the Gardai.

In a video of the moment shared online, a woman can be heard: ‘He’s aiming it right at them.’

As the explosive was let off, it narrowly missed the heads of Gardai as they quickly moved out of the way.

After a moment, Gardai reacted and chased protesters down Grafton Street as more explosives could be heard.

Some made it down the street, others fell to the ground, while a handful attempted to obstruct the Gardai.

A spokesperson for An Garda Siochana told Extra.ie: ‘A number of traffic diversions and other policing measures are currently in place in Dublin this afternoon, Saturday February 27, 2021 in response to a demonstration in the city centre area.

‘A policing plan has been implemented and An Garda Síochána will provide a full update when this operation has concluded.’

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said in an interview to be broadcast on Sunday it is too early to make a decision on reopening his country's border with the U.S.

“The approach that [President Biden] is taking on COVID right now much more aligns with where Canada has been for quite a while, grounded in science, grounded in protection of people as the best way to protect the economy, and understanding that, that being there to support people is absolutely essential so that we can get through this as quickly as possible,” Trudeau told NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

“It's great to see America re-engage. I think certainly there were things that were more challenging under the previous administration in terms of moving the dial in the right direction on the international stage,” he added.

Asked by NBC’s Chuck Todd how soon border restrictions would be listed, Trudeau responded: “I think there's an awful lot of different metrics we need to look at on.”

China makes anal swab Covid tests compulsory for foreign arrivals

China has made anal swab tests for the coronavirus mandatory for almost all international arrivals, deepening a row with other countries over a practice many have described as humiliating.

The Japanese government has already raised concern about its citizens being subjected to the “undignified” procedure while American diplomats have also complained. Katsunobu Kato, Japan’s chief cabinet secretary, said it would ask China to alter its testing regimen after some Japanese travellers reported suffering “psychological pain” from the invasive procedure.

Speedy variants power virus surge sweeping Europe
The virus swept through a nursery school and an adjacent elementary school in the Milan suburb of Bollate with amazing speed. In a matter of just days, 45 children and 14 staff members had tested positive.

Genetic analysis confirmed what officials already suspected: The highly contagious coronavirus variant first identified in England was racing through the community, a densely packed city of nearly 40,000 with a chemical plant and Pirelli bicycle tire factory a 15-minute drive from the heart of Milan.

“This is the demonstration that the virus has a sort of intelligence. ... We can put up all the barriers in the world and imagine that they work, but in the end, it adapts and penetrates them,” lamented Bollate Mayor Francesco Vassallo.

Bollate was the first city in Lombardy, the northern region that has been the epicenter in each of Italy’s three surges, to be sealed off from neighbors because of mutant versions that the World Health Organization says are now powering another uptick in infections across Europe. The variants also include versions first identified in South Africa and Brazil.

Because the J&J vaccine was tested later than the other ones and included people in South Africa & Latin America, it's shown 60%+ effectiveness with the those variants. The other companies are working on it, but have stated that they think vaccines are effective for the variants. I wonder how many people in Italy have been vaccinated.

► Show Spoiler
I found it!
As of March 4, 2021, there had over five million COVID-19 vaccine doses administered in Italy. Breaking down this figure by region, Lombardy stood out as the one that administered the highest number of vaccine doses, more than 776 thousand. However, the figures may be for one shot, not two.
"So far, in fact, just over 1.5 million people in Italy can be said to be fully protected against COVID-19."

This plan sounds alot like Thailand's: High-end package tours, which would probably be cheap options for vaccinated Chinese, but Vietnam doesn't really have great resort areas and the tourist areas of the city are open (though many shuttered businesses around the tourist zone here in Saigon) but they aren't much fun without a ton of hustle and bustle...We shall see...
Vietnam eyes stepwise plan to reopen to foreign tourists
Monday, March 08, 2021, 10:02 GMT+7

Vietnamese tourism authorities are devising a phased road map to welcome foreign tourists of certain nationalities back to the country.

Nguyen Thi Thanh Huong, deputy director of the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism, said the country would “not reopen completely” during a conference in coastal Quang Ninh Province on Friday.

Speaking of Vietnam's stance on reopening its borders to foreign tourists, Huong stated that selected foreign markets, more specifically those with high demand and preference for all-inclusive tour packages to the Southeast Asian country, would be welcomed back to certain resorts that can ensure apt isolation and air connection.

Echoing Huong’s ideas, Nguyen Manh Tien, deputy chairman of the National Assembly Committee for External Relations, urged relevant ministries and agencies to devise regulations and standards to reintroduce foreign tourists back in certain provinces, considering many secluded tourism complexes have been prepared in the country.

Will a lot change with the vaccine? Still way up in the air when I will be able to even get one (From the US Embassy HP):
Vietnamese health officials have also announced they expect to receive 60 million COVID-19 vaccine doses in 2021 to ensure better COVID-19 vaccination access for individuals in Vietnam. Any individual, Vietnamese and foreigners alike, with questions about COVID-19 vaccination access in Vietnam should contact the Vietnamese Ministry of Health directly.

Norway's capital introduces tightest restrictions of pandemic

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-heal ... B72Q7?il=0
Norway’s capital will close all middle and high schools and limit visitors in private homes to two people until early April to fight the spread of the coronavirus, the Governing Mayor of Oslo said on Monday.

In a separate press conference, Norwegian Health Minister Bent Hoeie announced that the government is introducing stricter measures for 52 municipalities surrounding the capital region, including the closure of non-essential shops and in-restaurant dining, although schools will remain open.

The government said last week that tougher national restrictions could be imposed unless local authorities managed to curb the COVID-19 outbreak.

The Nordic country has maintained one of Europe’s lowest rates of infection but now faces a third wave of the disease.

German COVID-19 cases are growing exponentially again: RKI

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-heal ... SKBN2B80KE
The number of cases per 100,000 reported on Tuesday was 83.7, up from 68 a week ago, and the RKI has said that metric could reach 200 by the middle of next month.

Germany is definitely in a third wave of the pandemic, driven by the fact it has loosened restrictions in recent weeks just as a more transmissable variant has spread, Dirk Brockmann, an epidemiologist at the RKI, told Germany’s ARD television.

“It has been totally irrational to loosen up here. It is just fuelling this exponential growth,” he said.

Chancellor Angela Merkel and state leaders agreed a phased easing of curbs earlier this month along with an “emergency brake” to let authorities reimpose restrictions if case numbers rise above 100 per 100,000 on three consecutive days.

Icelandic authorities have decided to enact regulations this week, allowing travelers from the US and UK who present certificates of vaccination for COVID-19 to enter the country, mbl.is reports.

We reported yesterday that so far, neither certificates of vaccination nor certificates of antibodies for COVID-19 have been accepted at Icelandic borders from passengers coming from outside the Schengen Area, which comprises 26 European countries.

Now, this is about to change.
You may not want to go to Iceland, but keep those cards safe, people!

China is resuming visa processing for foreigners from dozens of countries, but only if they have been inoculated against Covid-19 with a Chinese-made vaccine.

The move has raised questions about the motivations behind the demand, given China’s vaccines are not approved in many of the countries to which it has opened travel and that it will not accept foreign vaccines made elsewhere, including those approved by the World Health Organization.

Beijing had largely banned non-essential travel into China during the pandemic. Resumption of travel is a key driver for economic recovery and many countries are discussing carefully negotiated bubbles, or mutually recognised vaccination passports, as they implement domestic vaccine rollouts.

The announcements made by Chinese embassies in about 20 countries this week vary slightly for each country but mostly pledge a return to pre-pandemic visa processing for some groups, so as to resume “people-to-people exchanges in an orderly manner”.

So far it is open to foreigners from places including Hong Kong, the US, the UK, India, Australia, Iraq, Thailand, Croatia, Israel, Pakistan and the Philippines. Any prospective entrants must have taken either the full two-dose course of a vaccine, or a single dose vaccine at least 14 days before travelling, but the vaccine must be one of China’s domestically produced shots. Negative Covid tests and quarantine rules still apply.

Covid: Germany warns of 'exponential' rise in coronavirus cases
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-56460696
Coronavirus cases are rising exponentially in Germany, officials warn, as continental Europe braces for a third wave of infections.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said it was likely that the country would now need to apply an "emergency brake" and re-impose lockdown measures.

France, Poland and other nations are also reintroducing restrictions.

German Health Minister Jens Spahn has said that Europe lacks the vaccines needed to significantly reduce cases.

The COVID surge in Germany continues as the British variant becomes the dominant virus. I think I'll name it the Brexit virus.

Protests and riots are increasing across Europe as cases rise and new restrictions go into effect.

Anti-lockdown protests break out in Europe amid new COVID wave
"As European countries brace for another wave of infections, new coronavirus restrictions are triggering unrest."
The article reports on several countries facing angry citizens - many mask-less.
https://www.aljazeera.com/gallery/2021/ ... covid-wave

This is what we'll be seeing soon. Our new cases numbers have flattened instead of continuing to drop. I posted somewhere else (I think in the numbers thread) that almost half the states are beginning to show a rise. The Brexit virus is rapidly becoming dominant. On Friday Fauci warned that we have plateaued at about 55K per day, which has happened 3 times before another resurgence.

Well, great. My island reopens in two weeks.... :bangwall:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/20 ... -approval/
Hungarian officials announced Monday that they had issued emergency approval for China’s CanSino Biologics coronavirus vaccine and for Covishield, an Indian-made version of the vaccine developed by AstraZeneca, bringing the total number of approved coronavirus vaccines in the country to seven.

At an online news conference Monday, Surgeon General Cecilia Muller said the country needed vaccines, pointing to a third surge of coronavirus cases and an infection rate among the worst in the world.

“We are in a race against time,” Muller said, adding that vaccines were the “only way out of the epidemic” and that Hungary would continue to source vaccines from all over the globe.

Muller said both newly approved vaccines would be available in Hungary in the near future. If they receive approval for mass use by the National Health Center, Hungary will have seven sources from which to draw in practice.

As daily deaths near 4,000, worst may lie ahead for Brazil
Brazil currently accounts for one-quarter of the entire world’s daily COVID-19 deaths, far more than any other single nation, and health experts are warning that the nation is on the verge of even greater calamity.

The nation’s seven-day average of 2,400 deaths stands to reach to 3,000 within weeks, six experts told the Associated Press. That’s nearly the worst level seen by the U.S., though Brazil has two-thirds its population. Spikes of daily deaths could soon hit 4,000; on Friday there were 3,650.

Having glimpsed the abyss, there is growing recognition shutdowns are no longer avoidable -- not just among experts, but also many mayors and governors. Restrictions on activity they implemented last year were half-hearted and consistently sabotaged by President Jair Bolsonaro, who sought to stave off economic doom. He remains unconvinced of any need for clampdown, which leaves local leaders pursuing a patchwork of measures to prevent the death toll from spiraling further.

It may be too late, with a more contagious variant rampaging across Brazil. For the first time, new daily cases topped 100,000 on March 25, with many more uncounted. Miguel Nicolelis, professor of Neurobiology at Duke University who advised several Brazilian governors and mayors on pandemic control, anticipates the total death toll reaching 500,000 by July and exceeding that of the U.S. by year-end.

Brazil is just a tragedy...

I am surprised they are still going ahead with the Olympics. Japanese on-time efficiency is true but not under extraordinary circumstances and then throw a bunch of young foreigners on top of that...I may not make it back until next year...
Spectators From Overseas Are Barred From Tokyo Olympics

By Motoko Rich and Ben Dooley
Published March 20, 2021
Updated March 24, 2021

TOKYO — Spectators from overseas will not be allowed to attend the Summer Olympics in Japan, organizers said on Saturday, making a major concession to the realities of Covid-19 even as they forged ahead with plans to hold the world’s largest sporting event.

The Tokyo Games, which begin in July, were originally scheduled for 2020 but were delayed by a year because of the pandemic. The Tokyo organizing committee has been scrambling to develop safety protocols to protect both participants and local residents from the virus. Concern has been running high in Japan, with big majorities saying in polls that the Games should not be held this summer.

Seiko Hashimoto, president of the Tokyo committee, promised at a news conference on Saturday that the lack of international spectators would not spoil the Games.

.....

International ticket holders will now have to go through the process of seeking refunds. Everen Brown, 60, a photographer in Salt Lake City and a superfan who has attended 15 Olympics, bought about $8,600 in tickets for the Tokyo Games for himself and his nephew.

They were looking forward to seeing beach volleyball, archery, fencing, diving and a men’s basketball game and had tickets for the closing ceremony. According to terms from CoSport, the broker that handled ticket sales for U.S.-based fans, customers will not be repaid for some fees — which Mr. Brown said could cost him about $1,200 — and refunds could take time.

“Since we are being barred, it is only right for them to make everyone whole and refund all of the money paid,” Mr. Brown said before the announcement was made. What’s more, he said, after waiting a whole year, he wanted his refund quickly. “It would be real painful watching this at home on TV and knowing they have the money, and not knowing when you’re going to get it back.”

www.nytimes.com/2021/03/20/world/asia/t ... ators.html
[oh I cannot resist~~I mean, I am sorry for the guy but then again, who looks forward to archery?]

"Sir, your refund has been issued and is in route. Now, the carrier has had a slight delay, but the good news your check is most likely in one of the containers that Elon Musk will be removing with his rocket-copter and if it doesn't get accidentally dropped in the Persian Gulf, you should have it by Wednesday."

"This Wednesday?"

My daughter's school will make a decision soon as to whether they will return to the classroom this year. If not, she'll be on her way home very soon to get her vaccines. Every time I see another news report about the cases in Brazil my stomach knots up. It completely floors me that there is even a decision to be made about going back into the classroom, but then again, they haven't done anything else logically so I shouldn't be surprised. At least she no longer has to watch them digging mass graves from her apartment window.
