I am amazed that any cruise line is prepared to depart from a port in Florida, when they are not allowed to impose a prior vaccination requirement on passengers.
All it needs is for one cruise vessel to have an attack of Covid at sea, and the entire industry will be permanently impacted.
This could be one of the shortest commercial suicide notes ever written by a major industry.

I agree, but, also too, there isn't another state geographically situated to efficiently function as a port to the Caribbean. Sure, they could (and do) ship out of other red Gulf states, and I don't know what, say, LA is doing about vaccine proof. Was it Royal Caribbean or Norwegian that threatened to pull out but gave in? They were between a rock and a hard place. There's no good option but I suppose they decided to go ahead, suffer the inevitable consequences so they could say "I told you so!"

Two young unvaccinated passengers on Royal Caribbean cruise test positive for coronavirus

Two young unvaccinated passengers on a Royal Caribbean International cruise out of the Bahamas tested positive for the coronavirus, the cruise line said.

The passengers, who were younger than 16 and traveling in the same group, left Adventure of the Seas before the end of the cruise on Thursday in Freeport with their companions. They returned home to Florida on a private flight arranged by the cruise company, CEO Michael Bayley said in a Facebook post.

As for crew, the cuise companies are making the staff selection and I understand that they will not allow any not-vacinated staff to board. But I believe that several of the vaccinated in the past did not have the minimal two weeks until the vaccine comes into full effect. With the Delta variant nobody can be sure they are covid-free even when full protection is assumed. I guess the cruise industry will need to have staff within a two week quarantine like environment.

As for passengers, don't board any cruise leaving from FL with their idiot law forbidding a requirement of vaccination.

Norwegian Cruise Line sues Florida over prohibition on vaccine requirements.

The fight over requiring vaccinations for travel is heating up.

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings sued Florida’s surgeon general on Tuesday, accusing the state of preventing it from “safely and soundly” resuming trips by barring it from requiring customers to be vaccinated against the coronavirus.

The filing represents the latest twist in a monthslong fight over the resumption of cruises from Florida, a hub for the industry. Under Gov. Ron DeSantis, the state has fought vaccine requirements by cruises and other businesses, claiming that such policies are discriminatory. Supporters of vaccine requirements have argued that requiring vaccines is necessary to protect public health.

Under a state law approved in May, businesses that force customers to provide proof of vaccination could face fines of up to $5,000 per violation. In its lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida, Norwegian said it was forced to sue Scott Rivkees, the state’s surgeon general, “as a last resort.”

“One anomalous, misguided intrusion threatens to spoil N.C.L.H.’s careful planning and force it to cancel or hobble upcoming cruises, thereby imperiling and impairing passengers’ experiences and inflicting irreparable harm of vast dimensions,” the company said in the lawsuit.

Norwegian is claiming that Florida’s ban is not valid because it pre-empts federal law and violates various provisions of the Constitution, including the First Amendment. Neither Norwegian nor the Florida Department of Health immediately responded to requests for comment.

Several other ships in the Carrier Strike Group are also affected.

The CSG is in the Indian Ocean on the way to Japan.

Nearly 3,000 guests, crew disembark cruise in Singapore after positive Covid case left them confined in cabins

https://www.cnbc.com/2021/07/14/nearly- ... -case.html
Nearly 3,000 passengers and crew are disembarking a Dream Cruises ship on Wednesday after being confined in their cabins when a passenger tested positive for Covid-19.

All passengers and crew aboard the three-night World Dream “cruise to nowhere” in Singapore had been required to isolate in their cabins, with only essential crew members being allowed to move throughout the ship.

The guest had taken a rapid antigen test prior to boarding the cruise that came back negative, but contact tracing revealed the guest was a close contact of a confirmed Covid-19 case. The guest was then immediately isolated and tested positive for the virus on Tuesday, Dream Cruises, owned by Genting Cruise Line, said in a statement.

According to a report by Reuters, other guests on the ship were confined to their rooms being at 1 a.m. local time. The travellers began leaving the ship about 8:30 p.m.

Cruise Ship With COVID-19 Infections Arrives in New Orleans
The state health department said at least 10 people on the ship tested positive for COVID-19

https://www.nbcdfw.com/news/coronavirus ... t_DFWBrand
Local news outlets in New Orleans confirmed the Norwegian Breakaway had arrived in the city. The ship departed New Orleans on Nov. 28. The Louisiana Department of Health said in a late Saturday news release that over the past week, the ship made stops in Belize, Honduras and Mexico.

Norwegian Cruise Line issued a statement that confirmed a “handful of COVID-19 cases among guests and crew.” The company said all of the identified cases involved people without symptoms of the illness.

Norwegian said it requires all passengers and crew members to have been vaccinated against the coronavirus prior to departure.

“We are testing all individuals on Norwegian Breakaway prior to disembarkation, as well as providing post-exposure and quarantine public health guidance by the (U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention),” the company's statement said. “Any guests who have tested positive for COVID-19 will travel by personal vehicle to their personal residence or self-isolate in accommodations provided by the company.”

There were 3200 people on that ship. They plan to leave on another cruise tomorrow.

Yeah, let's do our sums.

Three thousand, two hundred people on the ship. Does that include non-passengers? Anyway, 3,200. They are all - ALL - vaccinated against the virus. They visit Belize, Honduras, and México. Somehow by the time they get back to N'awlins, 10 of them - about a third of one percent - have breakthrough cases. Which will not be terribly serious, if they're being honest about having gotten the vax.

That's really not :panic: time.

IMHO.

You do know that there is a new, aggressive variant -- Omicron

Oh yeah, I do know that. I think it's still a good time to stay home and not go on cruises. Even fully vaxed, you're taking a risk going to foreign countries.

Except that the incubation period for Omicron is 5-7 days. Assuming the infected people were actually negative when they boarded the ship and became positive over the next few days, they only boarded 7 days ago. No reason to think that there won't be more positives in the next few days.
