Oh then you don’t want to read today’s headlines about Bob Dylan.

CNN: Lawsuit alleges Bob Dylan sexually abused a 12-year-old [girl] in 1965.

(Dylan turned 24 in 1965.)

Not to broken record this, but I've known this moron (Abbott) since he was in law school. As one of my friends noted years ago, "Abbott went to Austin and became a monster." I think of that comment often these days.

Is there no bottom Abbott (and the legislature) can go?

Today is my friend's 70th birthday. I will call him but I wanted to re-up this post because Greg Abbott is still a monster.

from the article linked in above tweet
The new law requires social media companies with more than 50 million monthly users to disclose their content moderation policies and institute an appeals process. It would also require such social media companies to remove illegal content within 48 hours.

Under the state legislation, users may sue the platforms to get their accounts reinstated, and the Texas attorney general would be able to file suits on behalf of users.

"We will always defend the freedom of speech in Texas, which is why I am proud to sign House Bill 20 into law to protect first amendment rights in the Lone Star State," Abbott said in a statement. "Social media websites have become our modern-day public square. They are a place for healthy public debate where information should be able to flow freely — but there is a dangerous movement by social media companies to silence conservative viewpoints and ideas. That is wrong, and we will not allow it in Texas."

Not sure what this actually accomplishes, other than riling up the rubes.

Not clear how Texas state law applies to corporate entities not in Texas.

But I am definitely NAL.

I'd wager that most Fogbowsers are smart enough to use VPNs successfully, though. At least, on a better curve than most of Texas. But that could just be my selectivity bias showing.

Parler and GAB are safe from the new rule because they are quite small. Telegram is not but will Abbot go after a company in the UAE?

Oh, thanks! Actually, we are still at our summer place out of state and are extremely reluctant to go back. If we do I want to get a Handmaid's costume and wear it to the grocery store!

Texas Board of Pardons recommended a pardon for George Floyd's 2004 TX drug conviction based on the mess that has become the arresting cop's history in Harris County. The recommendation now goes to Abbott. My bet is that he does not issue a pardon because he is more concerned about performing for the right. Justice is none of his concern. He will use some excuse that Floyd is deceased so issuing a pardon is just PR.

And refusing to pardon Floyd is PR for Abbott.*

*If he refuses, which I also assume will be the case.
