Northern Ireland Set to Legalize Abortion and Same-Sex Marriage
The collapse of local government allowed Parliament to step in and bring the territory’s laws in line with Britain’s principles of human rights.
By Ceylan Yeginsu Oct. 21, 2019 Updated 1:45 p.m. ET

BELFAST, Northern Ireland — Traditionally conservative Northern Ireland is about to legalize both abortion and same-sex marriage, a head-snapping about-face that was imposed on the territory by the British Parliament.

The changes, bitterly resisted by anti-abortion and church groups, were mandated in an amendment to a routine bill on governance of Northern Ireland that Parliament passed in July amid a power vacuum created by the collapse of the region’s governing assembly nearly three years ago.

The amendment will go into effect at midnight on Monday, weeks after the High Court in Belfast rebuffed a legal challenge, ruling that Northern Ireland’s 158-year-old abortion laws are incompatible with the United Kingdom’s human rights commitments.

The judgment was a major victory for women’s rights activists, who had felt left behind after the Republic of Ireland voted to legalize abortion last year. Although Northern Ireland is a part of the United Kingdom, and the majority of its people say they would like abortion to be made available, the regional power-sharing government had blocked abortion reform before collapsing in 2017 over sectarian divides.

 Press release from Keen. Incredible, incredible, thank you to the majority of America for having open hearts and minds. Root beers for everybody!
LGBT Candidates Sweep to Victory Across America on Tuesday

More than 75 percent of openly LGBT candidates running in Tuesday’s off-year elections won. The total, 112, 106 Democrats, one Republican, one Independent, and four with undeclared party affiliations. It was a happy night for Democrats. Anti-LGBT Republican Governor Matt Bevin of Kentucky was beaten by pro-LGBT Democrat Andy Beshear. In 2016, Republican presidential nominee won Kentucky with a 30-point margin over Democrat Hillary Clinton. In Virginia, where gerrymandered districts installed Republican majorities in both the state House and Senate in 2017, courts quashed the map and voters gave Democrats a sizeable majority in both chambers.

All nine openly LGBT candidates in Virginia won their races, including five incumbents in the General Assembly. Among those five was Danica Roem, a transgender candidate who won a stunning upset victory against an incumbent Republican two years ago for a House seat. Tuesday, she won re-election against another anti-LGBT Republican challenger, with a margin of victory six points larger than in 2017. Roem raised nearly twice as much money as her opponent, Kelly McGinn. McGinn had signed onto a letter calling marriage for same-sex couples “morally repugnant.”

Human Rights Campaign President Alphonso David said the results in Virginia sent “a powerful message that Virginians support a bold, progressive vision for the future of the Commonwealth.” David said HRC helped turn out 1.2 million “Equality Voters” in Virginia and spent over $250,000 to elect “pro-equality candidates across Virginia.”

Pennsylvania, a state which Trump won by less than one percent in 2016, experienced a “blue wave” of voter support for Democratic candidates. According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, said Republican candidates were “fading even on friendly turf.” The Keystone State fielded the largest number of LGBT candidates than any other state –14. And 13 of those 14, all Democrats, won, including Jessica Rothchild to the Scranton City Council.

Ohio also voted for Trump in 2016, but Democrats did well this year, and all 12 of Ohio’s openly LGBT candidates won, including new Toledo City Council member Theresa Gadus. In Indiana, which gave Trump an almost 20-point margin over Clinton in 2016, the 25-member Indianapolis City Council picked up three new openly LGBT City Council members to join another who won re-election Tuesday night. Alison “Ali” Brown, Keith Potts, and Ethan Evans will now join Zach Adamson on the capital city’s governing board. Brown and Evans are openly bisexual and married to spouses of the opposite sex. Evans and Potts both beat Republican incumbents.

Among the more stinging of the 21 LGBT losses Tuesday was Telluride, Colorado, Mayor Sean Murphy, who lost his bid for re-election to a second term. Telluride was among only five incumbent LGBT candidates who lost their re-election bids. In Houston, where five openly LGBT candidates were running as Democrats for City Council, only two won. And outside Atlanta, in Doraville, Georgia, an openly gay City Councilman, Joseph Geierman, lost his bid for mayor. Of the 112 openly LGBT candidates, 105 were running for local office. The field included 67 men, 44 women (including six trans women), and one non-binary candidate. The national Victory Fund said 80 of the candidates it endorsed won Tuesday night. The organization said it directed more than $420,000 to its endorsed candidates. “We are building a pipeline of out LGBTQ leaders at every level of government,” said Annise Parker, president of the LGBTQ Victory Fund and former mayor of Houston.

Other highlights among Tuesday’s results:

In a Seattle City Council race, openly gay candidate Egan Orion appears to have beaten an incumbent in District 3. Orion, a gay activist and former organizer of Seattle’s pride parades, told local news outlets that he was “really frustrated” that the corporate giant Amazon supported his campaign through a political action committee that gave half a million dollars to his bid.
In the Texas House district outside Houston, lesbian Eliz Markowitz was the top vote-getter among six candidates and the only Democrat. But now she’ll have to run against just one of those Republicans for the heavily Republican 28th District seat. The runoff will take place in December.
Former Florida State Rep. David Richardson will meet and opponent in a runoff for a seat on the Miami Beach Commission. Richardson came up just one point short of reaching enough votes to win the seat Tuesday. Richardson won 49 percent of the vote; his runoff opponent won 38 percent.
In tiny Carrboro, NC, openly lesbian Mayor Lydia Lavelle won re-election unopposed and openly gay newcomer Damon Seils won one of three seats on the town’s Board of Alderman –coming in second out of five candidates. In nearby Hillsborough, openly gay incumbent Matt Hughes came in first out of four candidates running for three seats on the Board of Commissioners.
In Newton, Massachusetts, transgender candidate Holly Ryan was unopposed for a seat on the City Council, making her the first transgender woman to win election to public office in the 11th most populated city in the state. Prior to running for office, Ryan served as the LGBT liaison for two mayors.

The Victory Fund estimates there are 765 openly LGBT elected officials nationwide. Parker said “Americans are understandably focused on the 2020 presidential and congressional elections, but the LGBTQ candidates who won tonight will arguably have a greater impact on the everyday lives of their constituents.”

I wrote a long post about this, then hit the wrong button and *poof*, into the ether. Try #2.

In Texas, there’s a case where a young child is either James or Luna, depending on which parent is consulted. The story was brought to national attention by Walt Heyer in The Federalist. (Walt Heyer, it turns out, is a former trans woman. He says trans people do it for attention.)

https://thefederalist.com/2018/11/26/mo ... sagreeing/

https://thefederalist.com/2019/10/25/te ... reatments/

Many conservative and Christian Right publications and bloggers picked up the story and ran with it, using the Heyer story as the source of facts. The family’s pictures, names, addresses, schools, etc. have been published. The mother’s pediatric practice closed due to vandalism including dead animals left at the entrance. Her twitter account was deleted due to horrific abuse. A rock was thrown through the children’s bedroom window.

Another vlogger delved into the court documents posted on the father’s site. According to transcripts and unlike the father’s public narrative, the father only has boy’s clothing at his home, refuses to dress the child as a girl, and shaved the child’s head. (The child has a twin brother, whose hair wasn’t cut.) The mother has both boy’s and girl’s clothes and allows the child to choose. The child chooses girl’s clothing at school and prefers to be called Luna. Child Protective Services was called, investigated, and testified that there was no abuse by the mother and that the child identifies as a girl. Teachers, siblings, the child, and a neutral pediatrician agreed. The jury agreed and awarded custodianship to the mother, but the judge intervened and awarded joint custodianship.

Meanwhile, anti-LGBTQ factions are up in arms. It’s a conspiracy by the Liberals and Homosexuals to recruit victims for pedophiles, all paid for by George Soros. The father’s pediatrician-ally is the Executive Director of the American College of Pediatricians (anti-LGBTQ conservative group), who says the mother has Munchausan-by-proxy and desperately wants a girl -- in spite of her having adopted 2 older girls. The father claims he doesn’t have a religious objection, in spite of his many statements at religious rallies and in interviews with religious video hosts. He’s also raised over $139,000.

The mother was awarded an annulment due to fraud. The court found, among other gems, that he lied about his education, his previous marriages, his military experience, his income, his debt, and his employment. (He wasn’t a professor, didn’t teach, didn’t have college degrees, and told the Army he was a homosexual to get discharged but wasn’t.) He was a vexatious litigant. He “will say or do anything to get his way.” He was behind in and/or failed to make ordered payments. He sold her truck. He physically and mentally abused her older children. Lots of crunchy goodness here: http://search.txcourts.gov/SearchMedia. ... f3ab2d1708 and in the appeal https://www.casemine.com/judgement/us/5 ... 519068f711

Vox delved into both this case and conservative legislators trying to get involved in transkids lives.
https://www.vox.com/identities/2019/11/ ... ld-custody

What the battle over a 7-year-old trans girl could mean for families nationwide
Legislators want to have a say in whether Luna Younger should be allowed to socially transition.
Around age 3, Luna Younger started asking to wear dresses. Since the age of 5, she has insisted she is a girl. Now Luna is 7, and during court hearings, physicians, school staff, and family members have all testified that Luna has consistently, persistently identified as a girl.

While Luna’s mother respects her daughter’s gender identity — letting her wear what she chooses, whether it’s nail polish, dresses, or longer hair — Luna’s father does not. He insists Luna is not transgender. These polarizing differences over how to raise and treat a child are why trans families and advocates, as well as conservatives, have been closely watching the custody battle over the Coppell, Texas, trans girl.

After 15 months in court, on October 22, the jury awarded Luna’s mother, Anne Georgulas, full conservatorship of her daughter. It was a decision that brought relief to the trans community and outraged conservatives who believe supporting a trans child’s gender identity is tantamount to child abuse. :snippity:

Two days after the debate boiled over online, Judge Kim Cooks decided to vacate the jury decision. Instead, she granted the parents “joint managing conservatorship,” which is the equivalent of joint custody in Texas. (Cooks has maintained that she did not make her decision based on any government official’s opinion; she has not responded to Vox’s request for comment.) While Georgulas, a pediatrician, had requested that the court order Luna’s father, Jeffrey Younger, to respect their daughter’s gender identity, Cooks said that “the Court finds that the State of Texas has no compelling interest to justify such interference.”

The ruling has brought more questions than answers: When one parent honors her child’s gender identity and the other does not, what does that mean for the child? More specifically, what will it mean for her socialization, her mental well-being, and who she’s allowed to be?
Reddit has a scam page with many links.

TL/DR: Father is a piece of work lying grifter. Mother is trying to make a safe harbor for her children. Child is being turned into a poster child of the Conservative Christian Right, but just wants to be the girl she knows she is.

We're a country that puts children into cages to die like animals, so nothing about the treatment dished out to Luna and her mother is shocking, but everything about that case makes me shake with anger. I hate her father and her abusers and every asshole who chuckles or shakes their head over the story and I hate this goddamned country.

But it's just an instance of a much broader anti-trans/anti-2SLGBTQ strategy that the fascists have adopted to bully and threaten anyone "sick" or "crazy" enough not to be a straight white man. Even the language is indistinguishable from the language been used to bully faggots for decades. Nothing's changed. Nothing's new.

apropos of this, here's dave rubin, a gay man and self-described "classical liberal," who's widely feted by the right and whose punditry is watched by millions, yesterday

the right's obsessed by anything that smacks of gender variance and rightists will take every opportunity to incite disgust for it in exactly the same way that they've always incited disgust for homosexuality. why, in the last republican administration, republicans took the presidency by running against dave's marriage

(if there's any comfort here, it's the knowledge that if the fascists come for us, they'll come for dave rubin, too, and maybe someone will shank him in the camps)

Huckabee: Chick-fil-A should change the name to ‘Ichabod Chicken Sandwiches’

Chick-Fil-A Will No Longer Donate To anti-LGBT Organizations
NATIONALCNN Jordan Valinsky 11/18/2019 2:04 pm

(CNN) Chick-fil-A is making major changes to its charitable foundation, ending donations to two organizations that have been criticized for being anti-LGBT. The fast food chain announced Monday that beginning next year it will only donate to a certain group of charities. That list no longer includes the Salvation Army and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA). Both organizations have taken controversial stands on homosexuality and same-sex marriage. In 2018, the Chick-fil-A foundation donated $1.65 million to the FCA and $115,000 to The Salvation Army, the company revealed Monday.

The FCA writes in its employee application that "neither heterosexual sex outside of marriage nor any homosexual act constitute an alternative lifestyle acceptable to God." It also states on its website that "marriage is exclusively the union of one man and one woman." The Salvation Army has said in the past that the Bible forbids sexual intimacy between members of the same sex, that gay Christians should embrace celibacy and that scripture does not support same-sex marriages, according to Snopes. However, the Salvation Army says its services are available to all people, and the organization strongly refutes accusations that it is anti-LGBTQ. Neither organization immediately replied to CNN Business' request for comment.

Going forward, Chick-fil-A said it will work exclusively with organizations that focus on education, homelessness and hunger. Those are Junior Achievement USA, Covenant House International and donating $25,000 local food banks. Chick-fil-A's donations and comments from its executives have sparked controversy over the past several years. CEO Dan Cathy said in 2012 that the company supports "the biblical definition of the family unit." In a 2018 interview with a local Atlanta TV station, Cathy reiterated his position on same-sex marriage but said he's not anti-gay.
Gay rights organization GLAAD said in a statement that Chick-fil-A customers and employees should "greet today's announcement with cautious optimism" but says the company still has a checkered policy when it comes to LGBTQ rights.

"In addition to refraining from financially supporting anti-LGBTQ organizations, Chick-fil-A still lacks policies to ensure safe workplaces for LGBTQ employees and should unequivocally speak out against the anti-LGBTQ reputation that their brand represents," said Drew Anderson, GLAAD's director of campaigns and rapid response. The Georgia-based company is increasingly expanding into more liberal areas. It recently opened restaurants in New York City. Since it's privately held, sales figures aren't public but recent research found that Chick-fil-A generated $9 billion in sales in 2017. One estimate points to $10.5 billion in sales in 2018, according to Nation's Restaurants News.
All the "tolerance" for the gay community that lured young gay guys into being Trumpers is sure working out great.

I bought one of their sandwiches a couple of years ago. I wasn't impressed. Without having tried one, I'd say that Popeye's probably builds a better chicken sandwich. When I see a Buttigieg for President sign at one of their drive-throughs, I may try another one and see if the menu has gotten any better.

That's an interesting set of maps, with a clear border between the western side allowing same-sex marriage and the eastern side forbidding it. The countries in the eastern group are generally those with historic (including present) Orthodox Christian or Islamic cultures while those in the western group are historically Roman Catholic and/or Protestant. Poland is an exception being Catholic but I don't know if its Slavic connections are a factor or perhaps it's simply because the influence of the RC church remains stronger there than in other Catholic (e.g. Ireland) and formerly Catholic (e.g. France) countries?

Of course, correlation does not prove causation! (Ok, for Bayesians, it's complicated, as always.) It could simply be a cultural wave spreading eastwards. It could be affinity with the European Union and pressure or desire to conform. It could be degree of contact with English-speaking culture. It could be something very different.

But it's still a clear division.

Substitute teacher removed from school after students complain she called homosexuality 'wrong'
BY JUSTINE COLEMAN - 12/01/19 05:07 PM EST

A substitute teacher in Utah was removed from an elementary school after students complained she called homosexuality “wrong.” The incident began when a teacher asked a fifth grade class in Cedar Hills, Utah, what each student was thankful for, The Salt Lake Tribune reported Friday. One student, the son of former “Dancing with the Stars” coach Louis van Amstel, said he was “thankful that I’m finally going to be adopted by my two dads.”

Students said the teacher responded, “Why on earth would you be happy about that?” before talking for 10 minutes to the class about how “homosexuality is wrong” and “two men living together is a sin.” She looked at the student who made the comment and said, “That’s nothing to be thankful for,” according to the Tribune. Three girls reportedly asked for her to stop, and when she did not, they left to tell the principal. As the substitute teacher was escorted from the building, she accused the boy of setting her off. The school called the student’s fathers after the incident, who told the Tribune they were “livid” that this occurred, especially in a public school. “You can imagine that set us off,” van Amstel said in a video posted on Twitter. “We are not letting this go.”

Our child was bullied. pic.twitter.com/gZ5yI0Z2F0
— Louis van Amstel (@LouisVanAmstel) November 22, 2019

The student was reportedly nervous to tell his fathers because he experienced two previous failed adoptions and thought the incident would make his fathers rethink their decision to adopt him, according to the Tribune. The final hearing for his adoption is scheduled for Dec. 19. Alpine School District spokesman David Stephenson confirmed to The Hill that an incident occurred with a substitute teacher and that “appropriate action has been taken.” He said in a statement to the Tribune that the situation is under investigation. “[We’re] committed to having the best employees who care about all children in our schools, whether it be the teacher, the custodian, the secretary or a substitute teacher,” he said in the a statement.

The school district has contracted the staffing company Kelly Services to hire substitutes since 2011. “We are concerned about any reports of inappropriate behavior and take these matters very seriously,” Kelly Services said in a statement obtained by the Tribune. “We conduct business based on the highest standards of integrity, quality, and professional excellence. We’re looking into this situation.” The Hill reached out to Kelly Services for comment.

For black women of a certain age, Billy Dee Williams is THE MAN. Now 82, wild interveiw...
Billy Dee Williams Comes Out As Gender-Fluid In Interview
Williams will appear in “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” later this month.
BY TOBIAS CARROLL / DECEMBER 1, 2019 2:13 PM

In a few weeks’ time, Billy Dee Williams will return to the role of Lando Calrissian in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. It’s the first time Williams has played the character on film since The Empire Strikes Back; Donald Glover played a younger version of the character in 2018’s Solo. In a recent interview, the 82-year-old opened up about something unexpected.

Out reports that Williams came out as gender fluid in a conversation with Esquire, noting that he uses multiple pronouns when referring to himself. (Alternately: that she uses multiple pronouns when referring to herself.) “I say ‘himself’ and ‘herself,’ because I also see myself as feminine as well as masculine,” Williams told the magazine.

The reaction from fans of the actor and of the Star Wars series has been overwhelmingly positive, with Entertainment Tonight collecting a good cross-section of the responses to Williams’s news. This caps a host of news that expanded the way many people viewed both Williams and Williams’s most famous character. Last year, Solo screenwriter Jonathan Kasdan confirmed that Calrissian is pansexual, a take on the character that Glover supported wholeheartedly.

I’m psyched that Billy Dee Williams came out as non-gender binary right before the release of the new Star Wars movie that people who hated the last one hoped would represent some kind of return to “traditional“ heroics.

Poland is not the only outlier. Like Poland, Slovakia has a strong RC presence and no Orthodox history. Latvia was traditionally Lutheran, but has not yet moved towards leglization. On the other hand Greece had the Orthodox Church, but has apparently liberalized its laws. Each country seems to have its own dynamic and timeline

Fair point. It will be interesting if/when academics can do good quality research to identify the critical factors in a country moving to liberalization, be they religion, socio-economic factors, democratic system, wealth, proximity to or trading relations with other liberal/illiberal countries, etc.

Less interesting if it's just people looking for any data to support their w.a. guesses (er, yeah, like me!).

Three girls reportedly asked for her to stop, and when she did not, they left to tell the principal.
Good for them! That is awesome.
