ACLU SETTLES LAWSUIT AGAINST BCSO FOR RACIALLY PROFILING AN AFRICAN-AMERICAN FEDERAL AGENT ON THREE SEPARATE OCCASIONS

Katie Hoeppner
FEBRUARY 10, 2020

ALBUQUERQUE, NM - The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of New Mexico and the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office reached a settlement last week in a police-profiling case filed by the ACLU on behalf of Federal Agent Sherese Crawford in December, 2017. The then 38-year-old African-American agent sued BCSO after she was pulled over on three separate occasions, twice by the same deputy, while on temporary assignment in New Mexico.

“This settlement is a victory for our client — an accomplished federal agent who was targeted for driving while black,” said ACLU of New Mexico Legal Director Leon Howard. “We hope BCSO learns from this lawsuit and takes immediate measures to ensure that deputies do not continue to humiliate and frighten people of color who are just trying to get from one place to the next in our state.”

The BCSO sheriffs who pulled Crawford over did not have probable cause or reasonable suspicion that she was breaking the law. None of the three times she was pulled over was she given a warning or a citation.

Victoria’s Secret ‘Karen’ attacks Black woman, has meltdown after she’s caught on camera
Biba Adams
Tue, July 13, 2021, 4:28 PM·

Ijeoma Ukenta captured the bizarre incident in which Abigail Elphick charged at her and later becomes hysterical when she realizes she’s being recorded.

A white woman caught on camera attacking a Black woman in Victoria’s Secret store had a full meltdown after realizing her rude and violent behavior had been caught on camera.

The first of a six-part YouTube video recorded at the Short Hills Mall and posted by Ijeoma Ukenta Sunday shows the woman, identified in a police report as Abigail Elphick, charging at her with a hand open as if to strike her. In later recordings, Ukenta said she was browsing at the lingerie store when the woman moved in front of her, basically pushing her out of the way.

Instead of leaving the store, Elphick screams and at one point, pretends to faint laying on the floor in front of the Victoria’s Secret registers. In another video, she demands Ukenta stop recording her, yelling, “Get away from me!” while chasing the woman.

Yeah, she’s also not the daughter of a cop.
While this was more of a fail on Twitter conspiracy theorists' part, Elphick herself seemed to have some discrepancy involved in sharing information about her online as she is definitely not a teacher's aide under the Cedar Grove School District. Although she has ties to Cedar Grove and Newark, New Jersey, the school's website has denied Elphick is an employee there, writing on its homepage: “The individual involved at the Mall at Short Hills that took place on July 11, 2021 is not and has never been employed by the Cedar Grove Board of Education.”

England lost the Euro 2020 final game when 3 of its players missed penalty kicks at the end of the game which were taken because the match was tied after regular and overtime play.

The 3 players happened to be black. Already several racist online posts have resulted in arrests. A large mural honoring one of the players was defaced.

The prime minister threatens to ban the authors of abusive racist posts from attending future matches.

Facebook and Twitter have deleted thousands of these posts but haven't been able to keep up.

These racists should reflect on the fact that without the work if those players England might never have got to the final.

Commerce Unit Went ‘Rogue,’ Senate Report Says, Targeting Chinese Americans
An obscure federal office operated for more than a decade as an “unaccountable police force” inside the Commerce Department, using extreme and unauthorized tactics.

By Catie Edmondson
July 16, 2021, 6:11 p.m. ET

WASHINGTON — Officials in a little-known security unit within the Commerce Department conducted unauthorized surveillance and investigations into the agency’s employees that targeted people of Chinese and Middle Eastern descent, Senate investigators said in a new report.

The report, informed by more than two dozen whistle-blowers and released this week by Senator Roger Wicker of Mississippi, the top Republican on the Commerce Committee, concluded that the Investigations and Threat Management Service functioned for more than a decade as “a rogue, unaccountable police force,” opening thousands of unauthorized investigations into department employees, often for specious reasons.

It found that the work of the office — consumed by concerns about rampant Chinese espionage in the United States — sometimes veered into racial profiling, and that its leaders used extreme tactics, such as sending masked agents to break into offices to search for incriminating evidence.

“Combating national security threats posed by China should be a priority for any agency, but that does not give the federal government a license to disregard the law,” Mr. Wicker said in a statement. “Abuse of authority and race-based targeting is unacceptable, especially in law enforcement.”

The unit, an internal security office inside the Commerce Department, became fixated on rooting out foreign espionage, according to the report, resorting to searching employees’ email accounts for certain phrases in Chinese and flagging “ethnic surnames” for background checks through secure intelligence databases. In some cases, its agents would covertly search employees’ offices wearing face masks and gloves, sometimes picking locks to gain entry.

In a new political low in Texas, the Republican-dominated state Senate has passed a bill to eliminate a requirement that public schools teach that the Ku Klux Klan and its white supremacist campaign of terror are “morally wrong.”

The cut is among some two dozen curriculum requirements dropped from the new measure, along with studying Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech, the works of United Farm Workers leader Cesar Chavez, Susan B. Anthony’s writings about the women’s suffragist movement, and Native American history.

Critics say the state is promoting an “anti-civics” education.

Senate Bill 3 — passed last Friday 18-4 — drops most mentions of people of color and women from the state’s required curriculum.

The Guardian has identified an Alaska assistant attorney general as a supporter of the Mormon-derived extremist group the Deseret nationalists who has posted a series of racist, antisemitic and homophobic messages on social media.

The Guardian’s investigation has triggered a review in the Alaska department of law, where the lawyer works.

But evidence from his Twitter output allowed Cicotte to be identified by anti-fascist researchers, whose evidence was confirmed and augmented by a Guardian investigation.

“Tommy Robinson loses High Court libel case”:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-leeds-57930901

“Anti-Islam activist Tommy Robinson has lost a High Court libel case brought by a Syrian schoolboy.
Jamal Hijazi was filmed being attacked in the playground at Almondbury School in Huddersfield in October 2018.
The English Defence League founder, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, claimed Mr Hijazi attacked "young English girls".
Mr Justice Nicklin ruled in Mr Hijazi's favour and granted him £100,000 in damages.
He was also ordered to pay legal costs which the BBC understands amount to about £500,000.”

This is what our representatives of color face on a daily basis. It's so ordinary I hesitate to post it, and that is really sad. Cori Bush, Congresswoman, MO-01.

https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2021/ ... -guardians
Known as the Indians since 1915, Cleveland’s Major League Baseball team will be called Guardians.

The ballclub announced the name change Friday with a video on Twitter narrated by actor Tom Hanks, ending months of internal discussions triggered by a national reckoning by institutions and teams to permanently drop logos and names considered racist.

:snippity:

Team owner Paul Dolan said last summer’s social unrest, touched off by the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis, spurred his intention to change the ballclub’s name.

In 2018, the Indians stopped wearing the contentious Chief Wahoo logo on their jerseys and caps. However, the team continues to sell merchandise bearing the smiling, red-faced caricature that was protested for decades by Native American groups.

To be perfectly honest, I think they both need help, though maybe of different kind. This incident (the start of which we see very little), encapsulates much of what is wrong in America today. An apparently minor incident blows up with ludicrous over-reaction on both sides. Threats of involving law enforcement, social media, a go fund me, lawyers, and so on. What is wrong with people? Everyone seems to be walking around full of latent anger. In a kinder, nicer society there would be an exchange of “sorry” and everyone would have gone home.
