Mass Shootings

#1

Post by Lani »

Four people, including a child, were killed Wednesday evening and a fifth person was injured in a mass shooting at an Orange office complex.

It marks the third mass shooting in the United States in two weeks, coming after incidents at three Atlanta spas that killed eight people, including six Asian women, and at a Boulder, Colo., supermarket that killed 10.

Few details were immediately available about the victims or a potential motive for the shooting.

Lt. Jennifer Amat, a spokeswoman for the Orange Police Department, said officers received a call about 5:30 p.m. of shots fired and responded to a business at 202 W. Lincoln Ave. in Orange. The beige, two-story office complex at the address contains a number of small businesses.

Are mass shootings only incidents that involve deaths? There was a shooting here at a bar last week that injured 7, but no deaths, and it obviously isn't being counted as one of the "three mass shootings in the US in the last week" so I'm curious how they decide what is or isn't a mass shooting.

AFAIK, four or more injuries is the definition of a mass shooting.

“Under U.S. federal law, the Attorney General – on a request from a state – may assist in investigating “mass killings,” rather than mass shootings. The term was originally defined as the murder of four or more people with no cooling-off period but redefined by Congress in 2013 as being murder of three or more people.”

“First, the Investigative Assistance for Violent Crimes Act of 2012, signed into law by the president in January 2013, permits the U.S. attorney general—at the request of appropriate state or local law enforcement personnel—to provide federal assistance during active shooter incidents and mass killings (defined by the law as three or more people) in public places. The attorney general delegated this responsibility to the FBI.”

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - Seven people have been shot in a mass shooting at 7th and Kidder Streets in Wilmington. N.C, according to Wilmington Police Chief Donny Williams.

The shootings happened at 718 Kidder St. around midnight.

“There was a house party that was taking place inside of a house,” Williams said. “At least seven people inside were shot and three are deceased. They are not being identified until the next of kin has been notified.”

The four injured are being treated at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

“We do not feel the general public is in any danger at this time and we are working to get suspects identified,” Williams said.

Williams says they do not have a motive for the shooting. The names of the victims are not yet being released as police work to notify family members of the shooting.

If you have any information, police ask that you contact the Wilmington Police Department at (910)-343-3609 or use the Wilmington, NC PD app. You can also text an anonymous tip to 847411 (tip411) by including the keyword WPDNC.

Allen Family of Six Killed in Apparent Mass Murder-Suicide: Police
Investigation ongoing into deaths of six family members inside Allen home

https://www.nbcdfw.com/news/local/allen ... e/2597209/
The names and ages of the victims have not been confirmed, but police said they included a grandparent, two parents and three children.

It looks like two teenage sons entered into an agreement that they were going to commit suicide and that they were going to take their family members with them," Allen Police Sgt. Jon Felty told KRLD-AM Monday morning.

It has not been confirmed when the deaths took place.

Felty said there is no threat to the neighborhood and that there were no problems reported at the home, KRLD reported.

Child calls 911 after four, including parents, killed in apparent murder-suicide, NYPD says
The 9-year-old girl, who is the daughter of the gunman and one of the slain women, was unharmed in the shooting, police said.

https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/ch ... d_nn_tw_ma
A 9-year-old girl called 911 after her father shot and killed three people, including her mother, in an apparent murder-suicide in Brooklyn on Monday evening, police said.

Officers responded to the call about 11:30 p.m. at an apartment building in the 360 block of Sutter Avenue, according to the New York City Police Department. The officers found two people in the hallway and another person in the living room. All were pronounced dead at the scene, the department said.

The names of the victims have not been released, but authorities said one is a teenage girl. The other two victims are 20-year-old and 45-year-old women.

Police said officers found the body of the 46-year-old gunman with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to his head in a walkway near the apartment. Two firearms were recovered near his body, according to authorities.

Navy hospital corpsman wounded 2 in Maryland shooting before being killed at nearby Fort Detrick, officials say
(CNN) A man shot and injured two people at a business in the Maryland city of Frederick on Tuesday morning before driving to the US military's nearby Fort Detrick, where personnel there shot and killed him, police said.

Though police didn't publicly identify the gunman, the US Navy said he was a Navy hospital corpsman, and Fort Detrick officials told CNN that he was posted at that installation.

The gunman -- a 38-year-old man -- entered a business at Riverside Tech Park in the northeast of the city and opened fire in or near it, striking two men, Frederick Police Chief Jason Lando told reporters.

He then drove to Fort Detrick, about 10 minutes away, where "personnel on the base" fatally shot him, Lando said.

For some reason, this is getting national news. A person in the military and may be stationed on Oahu began shooting through his hotel room door in the Kahala Hotel. No one has been injured. The Kahala Hotel & Resort guests and employees are being allowed to leave and many have left to the Waialae Country Club, where shuttles are waiting to take them home or to another hotel.

Negotiations are underway. NOBODY HAS BEEN INJURED OR DIED.

All hail the algorithm!
Content in general produces a feedback loop, with whatever people are consuming increasing demand, which results in more consumption, which means more of that content getting produced. This is news because outlets do not want to risk other outlets getting the views, and thus giving the people more of what they want.... and there probably is a certain degree of automation and emergent behavior involved with ranking systems bubbling stories up.

Man with apparent semi-automatic weapon taken into custody in Times Square

https://longisland.news12.com/sources-m ... mes-square
A man was taken into custody in Times Square with what was believed to be a semi-automatic weapon, according to sources.

Sources say an officer spotted an 18-year-old man with what he believed to be a semi-automatic weapon outside of the turnstile of the Times Square A/C/E subway station.

The man claimed to have a permit for the weapon in his home state and may have had an Ohio ID, sources say.

Sources say the man was taken into custody without incident and is being questioned, with charges pending.

Sheriff: 3 dead, 2 wounded in shooting at Wisconsin tavern

https://longisland.news12.com/sheriff-3 ... sin-tavern
KENOSHA, Wis. — Three people were killed and two were seriously wounded in a shooting at a busy tavern in southeastern Wisconsin early Sunday, sheriff’s officials said.

Kenosha County Sheriff David Beth said the suspect in the shooting at Somers House Tavern in Kenosha County is still at large, but that he believes the public is not in danger.

“We believe our suspect knew who he was targeting,” Beth said during a Sunday morning news conference. He asked that anyone with information about the incident contact the Kenosha Sheriff’s Department. Kenosha is about 30 miles (50 kilometers) south of Milwaukee, not far from the Wisconsin-Illinois border.

The suspect had been asked to leave the bar, but returned and opened fire. Beth said shots were fired inside and outside the bar, which he described as “very busy” at the time. He left open the possibility that there was more than one suspect. He said he believed at least one handgun was used.

We had 6 murders within 11 hours here. Three shot dead in a house, one shot dead in the middle of the street and two shot dead at a bar. That brings us to a total of 49 so far this year. We set a record last year with 120 and we'll no doubt blow past that this year.

This shit will never end until everyone is dead.

In the weekly newsletter from my former State Representative up in Massachusetts:
As you may have heard, there’s been a pause in distribution and administration of the one-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine due to a rare blood clotting disorder in six women. The pause is meant to determine the source of the disorder and whether the vaccine was responsible. The consequence of the pause is a speed bump in our efforts to increase the amount of vaccine available to the public and in reaching high-risk and homebound populations. My sense is that the pause demonstrates that the safety process is working. I wish we had the same process for mass shootings and access to guns.

The authorities had known that the gunman at an Indianapolis FedEx warehouse last week was mentally unstable, but they did not invoke a “red flag” law to bar him from buying guns.
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — A former employee who shot and killed eight people at a FedEx facility in Indianapolis never appeared before a judge for a hearing under Indiana's “red flag” law, even after his mother called police last year to say her son might commit “suicide by cop," a prosecutor said Monday.

Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears said authorities did not seek such a hearing because they did not have enough time under the law's restrictions to definitively demonstrate Brandon Scott Hole’s propensity for suicidal thoughts, something they would need to have done to convince a judge that Hole should not be allowed to possess a gun.

The “red flag” legislation, passed in Indiana in 2005 and also in effect in other states, allows police or courts to seize guns from people who show warning signs of violence. It is intended to prevent people from purchasing or possessing a firearm if they are found by a judge to present “an imminent risk” to themselves or others. Police seized a pump-action shotgun from Hole, then 18, in March 2020 after they received the call from his mother. But the law only gave them two weeks to make their case.

“This individual was taken and treated by medical professionals and he was cut loose,” and was not even prescribed any medication, Mears said. "The risk is, if we move forward with that (red flag) process and lose, we have to give that firearm back to that person. That’s not something we were willing to do.”

9 juveniles injured in gunfight that broke out at 12-year-old's birthday party
An estimated 60 people were at the party. Not one has given a formal statement.

https://abcnews.go.com/US/juveniles-inj ... itter_abcn
The incident occurred on the evening of Saturday, April 17, at approximately 8:37 p.m. in LaPlace, Louisiana -- about 28 miles west of New Orleans -- when officers received a call to reports of gunfire, according to St. John The Baptist Parish Sheriff’s Office.

When authorities arrived they discovered that multiple people had been shot after an alleged verbal confrontation at a 12-year-old child’s birthday party somehow erupted into a gunfight.

“Through further investigation, officers discovered nine juveniles were injured,” St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff’s Office said in a media statement. “Of the nine, seven were treated at a local hospital and released. Two remain in the hospital in stable condition. Those injured were a 17-year-old male shot in the arm; a 16-year-old male grazed in the ribs; a 15-year-old male with a graze wound to the ankle; a 15-year-old male shot in the foot; a 14-year-old male shot in the leg; a 13-year-old male shot in the leg; and a 12-year-old shot in both legs. A 16-year-old male shot in the stomach and a 14-year-old male with a gunshot wound to the head remain in the hospital.”

Authorities believe that an estimated 60 young people were at the 12-year-old’s birthday party and that two groups of male juveniles who have an ongoing feud with each other began arguing at some point during the party which is what eventually led to the shootout.
