Apparently there are huge forest fires in Siberia, and DOTUS offered Putin help during their recent phone conversation. I haven't picked up on what kind of help we'd offer (not fond of us sending our firefighters when they're needed here), but if DOTUS wants to go over and rake the forests, I'm good with that :swoon:
Some news item i read compared the area covered by fire to the size of Belgium. The token fire fighting plane will not help much.
Another country that failed to pick up all of the leaves on the floors of its forests?

This is a pretty chilling piece of video. I dont know how to link it off twitter but the link at the end is what popped out after I right clicked and selected "copy video address. It shows a woman talking at the camera as police are literally breaking down her door and ends with them grabbing her.

Lyubov Sobol posted a video showing armed, masked men barging into her office ahead of today's rally in Moscow. Sobol was one of the opposition candidates not allowed to stand in the upcoming municipal elections.

While all this is going on. Putin is convienently away from Moscow. He's off getting himself filmed in a tuff leather jacket and riding a 3 wheeled motorcycle with some bikers, in order to have that dominate the evening news. I'm not kidding. Its almost Trumpian in its immacho stupidity. And to make it better he stalled the bike.

Putin is hanging out with the Night Wolves in Crimea today, so you can guess what's leading the evening news

And even Moar News; series of large explosions at a Russian Ammo dump in Siberia.

Putin says deadly military blast occurred during weapons system test

HELSINKI (Reuters) - Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday that a deadly blast at a military site in northern Russia earlier this month had taken place during a weapons system test.

Speaking alongside Finnish President Sauli Niinisto in Helsinki, Putin said that Moscow could not reveal everything about the blast because of its military nature.

He did not reveal which weapons system was being tested at the time of the blast.

The Russian leader stressed the need for a better system to exchange information on such accidents in the future.

Little any other US president could do about this except build up a Navy forcy in the Mediterraenean and enforce the embargo at sea along the shorelines of Syria and Lebanon. Apart of that, the offer by Putin is more to incise the ire of dotus than being of real help. I understand from reading on the web (https://www.oilandgasiq.com/oil-and-gas ... gas-fields) that the oil fields along the Caspian Sea are underdeveloped and don't seem to have much of connection to transport capacity and no way of sending oil from the Persian Gulf to the north.

Politico
Where’s Putin? President’s party pulls election disappearing act

MOSCOW — Voters in Moscow go to the polls in a local election on Sunday, but when they examine their ballot papers, they won’t find a single candidate running on the ticket of President Vladimir Putin’s United Russia party.

Instead, more observant voters will discover United Russia members posing as “independent candidates” in an apparent bid to distance themselves from Putin’s increasingly unpopular party.

This is the first time since it was formed in 2001 that United Russia has failed to nominate — officially — candidates for the City Duma polls. Its logo, a bear, once ubiquitous in the run-up to elections, is conspicuously absent from campaign billboards. Opposition activists have defaced election posters for “independent” candidates affiliated to Putin’s party with stickers reading: “Caution! United Russia candidate.”

“It’s like a black mark against a candidate if they publicly acknowledge that they are a United Russia party member,” said Konstantin Gaaze, a political analyst at the Carnegie Moscow Center think tank. “This party is pretty dead.”

The Guardian
Pro-Putin candidates suffer losses in Moscow elections

Opposition figure Alexei Navalny hails success of tactical voting campaign

Pro-Kremlin candidates have suffered losses in local elections in Moscow as Vladimir Putin’s biggest critic hailed the success of his campaign to encourage strategic voting.

The election was closely watched by both sides following a summer of protests in the Russian capital against the Kremlin’s refusal to allow candidates allied with opposition leader Alexei Navalny on to the ballot.

According to Russian media reports the Kremlin banned opposition candidates after internal polling indicated they would win at least nine seats. While the city council has few powers, analysts say the Kremlin was reluctant to allow Navalny’s allies a foothold on the electoral ladder ahead of far more significant parliamentary polls due in 2021.

Navalny, 43, portrayed the city council elections as a referendum on Putin and the United Russia party that backs the president. He appealed to voters to cast their ballots for United Russia’s strongest challengers, even if they represented political parties that they would not normally vote for, such as the Communists.

CNN
2017 US extracted top spy from inside Russia to protect him from Trump Leaks

Wide concerns about Trump in intelligence community

The removal happened at a time of wide concern in the intelligence community about mishandling of intelligence by Trump and his administration. Those concerns were described to CNN by five sources who served in the Trump administration, intelligence agencies and Congress.

Those concerns continued to grow in the period after Trump's Oval Office meeting with Kislyak and Lavrov. Weeks after the decision to extract the spy, in July 2017, Trump met privately with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the G20 summit in Hamburg and took the unusual step of confiscating the interpreter's notes. Afterward, intelligence officials again expressed concern that the President may have improperly discussed classified intelligence with Russia, according to an intelligence source with knowledge of the intelligence community's response to the Trump-Putin meeting.

Knowledge of the Russian covert source's existence was highly restricted within the US government and intelligence agencies. According to one source, there was "no equal alternative" inside the Russian government, providing both insight and information on Putin.

CNN is withholding several details about the spy to reduce the risk of the person's identification.

So this extraction took place while Mike Pompeo was CIA director? And the asset has disappeared in Russia, so Putin knows the identity of that person. I hope they didn't relocate him/her to Great Britain.

Russia’s Fingerprints Are All Over Trump’s Ukraine Whistleblower Scandal

https://www.thedailybeast.com/russias-f ... ia=desktop
Elements of the bombshell whistleblower report outlining various aims pursued by the Trump administration with respect to Ukraine keep connecting back to Russia.

Several of the reported objectives of President Trump, his administration officials, and his personal attorney Rudy Giuliani would benefit the Kremlin, and not the United States or its national security. Namely, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky was urged to make a deal with Putin, pressured “to play ball” with respect to providing or manufacturing compromising materials about Democratic presidential contender Joe Biden, and essentially tasked with concocting “the evidence” to disprove the well-established fact that the Democratic National Committee server was hacked by Russian intelligence agents in 2016.

The unconscionable demand for Ukraine to make “a deal” with an invader— which has annexed and occupied its territory and continues to fuel an armed conflict that has claimed more than 13,000 lives—would mean a surrender of Ukraine’s national interests for the benefit of the Kremlin. It would also lead to the lifting of sanctions against Russia for its aggression in Ukraine. Casting doubt on Russia’s involvement in the hack of the DNC server would potentially lead to the lifting sanctions against Russia for its election-meddling and other malign activities.

Treasury targets Russians suspected of meddling in midterms

https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/wireSto ... itter_abcn
The Treasury Department is targeting Russians suspected of trying to influence the 2018 U.S. midterm elections.

Treasury says, however, there is no indication that they were able to compromise election infrastructure in ways that would have blocked voters, changed vote counts or disrupted vote counting.

Monday's action targets for sanctions four entities, seven individuals, three aircraft and a yacht that are all associated with the Internet Research Agency and its Russian financier, Yevgeniy Prigozhin.

Treasury says the IRA used fictitious personas on social media and disseminated false information to attempt to influence the 2018 U.S. midterm elections and try to undermine faith in U.S. democratic institutions.
