NBC News
Ex-Trump Adviser George Papadopoulos Pleads Guilty in Mueller’s Russia Probe

A former Trump campaign adviser struck a cooperation agreement with Special Counsel Robert Mueller, secretly pleading guilty three weeks ago to lying to federal agents about his contacts with Kremlin-connected Russians.

The bombshell announcement about George Papadopoulos, 30, came shortly after indictments against former campaign chair Paul Manafort and Manafort associate Rick Gates were unsealed, alleging financial crimes that predated Trump's candidacy.

Court documents unsealed Monday in the Papadopoulos case refer to unnamed campaign officials who were aware he was trying to set up a meeting between Trump and the Russians. Two sources familiar with the charges said one of the officials is Manafort, who authored a key email about Papadopoulos' efforts. ...

However, the court papers reveal that a Trump campaign supervisor, who was not named, encouraged Papadopoulos to make a trip to Russia for an off-the-record meeting with Russian officials "if it is feasible." ...

"Through his false statements and omissions, defendant ... impeded the FBI's ongoing investigation into the existence of any links or coordination between individuals associated with the Campaign and the Russian government's efforts to interfere with the 2016 presidential election," Mueller's team wrote.

Politico
George Papadopoulos' late night with the FBI ...

Breen declined to get into specifics of his conversations with his client, but suggested Papadopoulos was agitated by the series of events that played out on July 27. ...

In those conversations, the self-described oil, gas and policy consultant with a slot on candidate Donald Trump's foreign policy team learned that he was being charged with lying to the FBI in a January 2017 interview about his contacts with pro-Russia advocates and with obstruction of justice for shutting down his Facebook account one day after a follow-up interview with the FBI in February. ...

By the next morning, Robert Mueller's prosecution team told a federal judge Papadopoulos had "indicated he is willing to cooperate with the government in its ongoing investigation into Russian efforts to interfere in the 2016 presidential election." Prosecutors also said they hoped he would become a "proactive cooperator" — a term which can encompass efforts to obtain information from others or perhaps even to wear a wire.

After the dramatic stop at the airport, Papadopoulos was cut loose on his own recognizance the following afternoon, with prosecutors making no effort to seek bail or keep him behind bars. ...

In October, he became the first person to admit to a crime in connection with the Russia-focused Mueller probe.

Precisely what Papadopoulos did in recent months to aid the government remains unclear and the subject of speculation among Trump aides and former campaign officials. Prosecutors seemed pleased with the cooperation because they dropped the obstruction charge and allowed him to plead guilty to the false statement charge. A judge accepted Papadopoulos' plea at a secret hearing in October.

Papadopoulos role in Trump campaign appears extensive in undisclosed documents: report

Former Trump campaign adviser George Papadopolous appears to have had a larger role in the Trump campaign than campaign officials are willing to admit, according to documents reported Saturday by The New York Times.

Documents obtained by the Times show that Papadopolous was instrumental in setting up a meeting between then-candidate Donald Trump and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, and coordinated directly with later-ousted White House Chief Strategist Stephen Bannon in setting up the meeting and arranging talking points.

Other documents show that Papadopolous, then a member of the Trump campaign's fledgling foreign policy team, also met on behalf of the campaign with officials from the Israeli and Australian embassies. At least one conversation with a top Australian diplomat, led to the FBI investigation into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia, the Times reported.

The expanded role described by the documents comes in stark contrast to comments made by other former Trump campaign officials including Michael Caputo, who in October called Papadopolous a "coffee boy" who had "nothing to do with the campaign."

George Papadopoulos’ fiancée goes on tweetstorm to prove he wasn’t just a coffee boy to Trump
Noor Al-Sibai 06 FEB 2018 AT 15:29 ET

Simona Mangiante, fiancée to indicted former Trump campaign aide George Papadopoulos, is defending her man’s reputation on Twitter by insisting he was integral to the campaign and never acted without permission from the top.

As The Atlantic‘s Natasha Bertrand noted, Mangiante on Tuesday was “in the middle of a tweet/retweet storm of stories about how Papadopoulos played a high-level role on the campaign and never did anything without permission.”

BuzzFeed News
The Professor At The Center Of The Russia-Trump Probe Boasted To His Girlfriend In Ukraine That He Was Friends With Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov ...

A Ukrainian woman named Anna says Joseph Mifsud asked her to marry him in a restaurant overlooking the Kremlin. Later, he allegedly told a Trump campaign aide that Russia had "dirt" on Hillary Clinton. She hasn’t heard from him since that news broke in October.

Mifsud remains one of the mysteries in special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe of Russian interference in the 2016 US presidential election and possible Trump campaign collusion. According to court documents, Mifsud told Papadopoulos that the Russians had thousands of emails from Democrats in April 2016, two months before the Democrats themselves were aware that their computer system had been hacked. Mifsud told Papadopoulos he’d learned of the emails during a trip to Russia, but who told him is unknown.

Papadopoulos is reported to have later shared the information with the Australian high commissioner to the United Kingdom, whose government passed the information to US authorities after WikiLeaks began publishing the emails in July 2016. That information sparked the FBI to launch the investigation that Mueller now leads.

Exactly how Mifsud and Papadopoulos met also is not publicly known, though Papadopoulos is cooperating with the Mueller probe. Mifsud allegedly showed little interest in Papadopoulos until he learned that Papadopoulos had been named to Trump’s campaign.

Mifsud’s professional ventures before the Papadopoulos guilty plea are also in dispute. Papadopoulos’s fiancee, Simona Mangiante, who Mifsud hired in 2016 to work at the grand-sounding London Centre of International Law Practice, another UK-based organization where the Maltese academic held a senior position, told BuzzFeed News that she never understood what the organization did.

Papadopoulos says that Trump personally encouraged him to arrange meeting with Putin, new book reports
George Papadopoulos, a former foreign policy adviser to the Trump campaign and potentially a key witness in special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia probe, told federal investigators that before the election, Donald Trump personally encouraged him to pursue a summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to a new book being published Tuesday.

Papadopoulos’s account to Mueller — as reported in “Russian Roulette: The Inside Story of Putin’s War on America and the Election of Donald Trump,” by Yahoo News’ Michael Isikoff and Mother Jones’ David Corn — contradicts the public accounts of what took place at a critical meeting of Trump’s foreign policy team on March 31, 2016. It was at that meeting that Papadopoulos first informed Trump and the then candidate’s other foreign policy advisers that he had contacts in Britain who could arrange a summit between the GOP candidate and Putin.

Although one of the campaign officials present, J.D. Gordon, has said the idea was shot down by then Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions, Papadopoulos told Mueller’s investigators that Trump encouraged him, saying he found the idea “interesting,” according to the book, which cites sources familiar with his questioning by Mueller’s investigators.

Trump looked at Sessions, as if he expected him to follow up with Papadopoulos, and Sessions nodded in response, the authors write. Sessions has said he has “no clear recollection” of the exchange with Papadopoulos. A White House official said that others at the meeting remember it differently than Papadopoulos.

When a Russian news agency reached out to George Papadopoulos to request an interview shortly before the 2016 election, the young adviser to then-candidate Donald Trump made sure to seek approval from campaign headquarters.

“You should do it,” deputy communications director Bryan Lanza urged Papadopoulos in a September 2016 email, emphasizing the benefits of a U.S. “partnership with Russia.”

The exchange was a sign that Papadopoulos — who pushed the Trump operation to meet with Russian officials — had the campaign’s blessing for some of his foreign outreach.

Since Papadopoulos pleaded guilty last year to lying to the FBI about his Russia contacts during the campaign and agreed to cooperate with special counsel Robert S. Mueller III, Trump officials have sought to paint the 30-year old energy consultant as a low level volunteer whose outreach to Russia was not authorized by the campaign — and in some cases, was actively discouraged.

But emails described to The Washington Post, which are among thousands of documents turned over to investigators examining Russia’s interference in the 2016 campaign, show that Papadopoulos had more extensive contact with key Trump campaign and presidential transition officials than has been publicly acknowledged.

Papadopoulos's wife asks Trump to pardon her husband in Mueller probe

The wife of former Trump campaign aide George Papadopoulos on Monday appealed to President Trump to pardon her husband, who pleaded guilty last year in special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe.

Simona Mangiante Papadopoulos told Fox News’s Tucker Carlson that her husband was “dedicated and committed” to the Trump campaign. She said his “freedom is challenged” after he pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI last October amid the probe into Russian campaign interference.

“So I trust and hope and ask to President Trump to pardon him. I hope he will,” she said. ...

Papadopoulos was arrested in July and pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI about his contacts with Russians. He agreed to cooperate with Mueller's investigation.

Talking Points Memo - Josh Marshall
What On Earth Is Going On With George Papadopoulos?

So much news emerged overnight that I’m not sure how much attention will get focused on this odd development in the George Papadopoulos case. Let me address it briefly. We knew little about George Papadopoulos until last October when his plea deal with the Special Counsel’s office revealed that he was a key point of contact with Russian operatives during the 2016 campaign. Later we learned that his inebriated discussion with an Australian diplomat was the trigger that launched the Russia probe in July of 2016. He made a deal, has been cooperating and recently the Special Counsel’s office filed court papers signaling he’s likely completed his cooperation and is ready for sentencing. All of this is what you’d expect for a cooperating witness. But last night, Papadopoulos’s wife was on Fox asking President Trump for a pardon and seemingly claiming that George had been set up.

Now, it goes without saying that these are two different people, George Papadopoulos and his wife Simona Mangiante Papadopoulos. In practice though it’s hard to believe she’d go public with something so dramatically different from what he’s saying and what would seem to be his legal interests. Remember, the Special Counsel’s office still has the hammer of sentencing hanging over him. By any normal logic, he’s in no position to antagonize them.

What got attention last night was Mangiante basically begging for a pardon for her husband. But what got my attention was a bit different. Far from the posture one normally expects from a cooperating witness, Mangiante was essentially claiming her husband had been set up by the FBI and indeed that more evidence of FBI “spying” on her husband and the campaign was still to emerge. In the past, Mangiante had gone so far as to claim her husband would emerge as the “John Dean” of the Russia scandal, basically implying that he was the inside player whose testimony would prove the undoing of the President. In this video, before she asks Trump for a pardon, she rather unconvincingly explains that she never meant “John Dean” in the sense that the President had done anything wrong.

Legal Fees
My husband, George Papadopoulos, former Trump campaign foreign policy advisor, needs legal representation In the DNC lawsuit and to help make justice and clarity about his case. His role in the "Russia Investigation" has been profoundly misunderstood and abused. His young life has been on hold for too long now, and all our savings are now exhausted in legal fees.
Without your help we can't fight in the interest of the justice, and in the interest of all America to get to know the truth. We can't without proper legal representation. We can't do it without your support.
Your help means the world to us, and would be your contribution to help this chapter of American's history to be fairly written. Thank you will all my heart!
