Dallas Morning News
Barack Obama touts tolerance, inclusion, Texas barbecue at Dallas diversity conference

Former President Barack Obama said Thursday that the nation must embrace inclusion and not be divided by differences.

"The working premise of America is that despite those differences, we can come together as a team and transcend those differences," he said in Dallas.

The former president's remarks during a question-and-answer session at the National Diversity Council's annual conference were designed to bolster the group's work to promote diversity in the workplace.

But they were also a reminder of Obama's stark political differences with his successor, President Donald Trump. His remarks come as the nation is still grappling over what to do about illegal immigration and the county's changing demographics.

Americans rank Barack Obama as best president of their lifetimes: Poll
https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/america ... d=56545031
A new Pew Research Center poll says more Americans rank former President Barack Obama higher than any other when asked which president has done the best job in their lifetimes.

Obama was named the best or second best president by 44 percent of Americans in the survey that came out Wednesday. Thirty-one percent ranked him as the best president in their lifetimes.
:snippity:
Pew found that rankings changed by generation. More than 60 percent of millennials view Obama as the best or second best president of their lifetime and 46 percent name him as the best.
Sadly, Trump made the list, but at least Obama and Clinton got more votes than him.

WaPo
How will Obama be remembered? A massive new oral history project will help shape his legacy.

During his eight years as president, Barack Obama demonstrated a keen appreciation for history. The nation’s first African American commander in chief used Abraham Lincoln’s Bible for his swearing-in on Inauguration Day. He quoted Franklin D. Roosevelt when making an address about Syria. He held regular White House dinners with prominent historians to glean lessons from the past.

Now some of the crucial work to cement his own legacy is about to begin.

On Thursday, the Obama Foundation and Columbia University will announce the creation of a massive oral history project for the Obama presidency. Over the next five years, the Columbia Center for Oral History Research will conduct and collect more than 400 interviews of people with insight into the 44th president’s life and administration.

Starting with Herbert Hoover, oral history projects have been conducted for every American president. Some have had the cooperation of the former president himself, as Obama’s will. Others were conducted after the president’s death or without explicit approval, as was the case with Richard M. Nixon.

Many of these oral history collections are housed in presidential libraries or academic institutions and provide biographers with richly detailed firsthand accounts from which to reconstruct Oval Office narratives.

The Root: Sasha wore a classic black dress to the Sidwell Friends prom, while Milton, whose waves were sure to have made a few chaperones seasick by the end of the night, matched Sasha’s fly in a classic black tux and the quiet confidence of a man taking the President’s daughter to prom

Obama, Trudeau meet at Ottawa brewery

Former President Obama and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau were spotted at a brewery in Ottawa on Friday.

The pair, who were known to have a close working relationship during Obama’s tenure in the White House, were pictured on social media with beer and bites in hand at the brewery.

Trudeau shared a picture of the two on Twitter on Saturday morning, and the Big Rig Brewery in Ottawa posted several images of the meeting on their Instagram page.
................
It was not immediately clear what the two discussed. An Obama spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Hill.

Obama delivered a speech to thousands of attendees in Ottawa on Friday night, where he weighed in on life after his presidency and remarked about having "a little bit of a love affair with Canada," according to the CBC.

Yahoo!:
Obama attends Raptors-Warriors Game 2, gets MVP chants from crowd
:
With the Toronto Raptors appearing in their first-ever NBA Finals, celebrities have been flocking to Scotiabank Arena to experience the festivities firsthand.

Things kicked up a notch Sunday for Game 2, with former United States President Barack Obama in attendance as Toronto aimed to take a 2-0 series lead over the Golden State Warriors.

Obama has a well-documented friendship with Raptors president Masai Ujiri, and the relationship grew in part due to Ujiri’s work with Giants of Africa. In fact, the two impressive men were together when the Kawhi Leonard trade talks were materializing.

An avid basketball fan, Obama also has a close bond with Steph Curry, as the Golden State superstar has been involved in multiple Obama-led charitable initiatives. The Warriors won one NBA championship during Obama’s time in office, and decided to meet with him in lieu of visiting Donald Trump’s White House after their 2018 title.

Obama received MVP chants and a standing ovation from the Toronto crowd when shown on the jumbotron during a break in play in the first half.

New York Times
Kentucky Crowd Cheers Valedictorian's Trump Quote, Then Learns Obama Said It

Wisdom comes from the unlikeliest places. And on Saturday, Ben Bowling, the valedictorian of Bell County High School in Pineville, Ky., made an inspirational appeal that left his graduating classmates and their parents dumbstruck.

“This is the part of my speech where I share some inspirational quotes I found on Google,” he told the packed auditorium. “‘Don’t just get involved. Fight for your seat at the table. Better yet, fight for a seat at the head of the table’ — Donald J. Trump.”

The crowd burst into applause. President Trump is quite popular in Pineville and the surrounding area, which is the heart of coal country and overwhelmingly supported the president in the 2016 election after he promised to bring coal jobs back to America.

Mr. Bowling, though, wasn’t finished.

“Just kidding,” he said. “That was Barack Obama.”

The cheering abruptly stopped. The crowd went mostly silent. There was a lone boo.

CNN
Judge throws out lawsuit attempting to block Obama's Presidential Center

(CNN) A federal judge on Tuesday dismissed a lawsuit that tried to prevent construction of the Obama Presidential Center in Jackson Park on Chicago's South Side, saying that construction should begin immediately.

Environmentalists brought the lawsuit against the city of Chicago for the offering of public land for the private project, which former President Barack Obama announced in 2015. Democratic lawmakers in Springfield previously introduced legislation to give the city legal authority to have a private museum or library built on public lands.

"This case is important, but it is not a difficult case," US District Judge John Blakey said in making his ruling to dismiss it.

The Obama Foundation chose Chicago to house the presidential center, which will serve as the foundation's headquarters and a presidential library, in a nod to the former President and first lady's ties to the city. The project will also include a lantern-shaped museum, a public meeting space, an athletic center and a branch of the Chicago Public Library, according to the project website.

The center will also provide space for collaborations with Obama's famous friends, including "a studio where I can invite Spike Lee or Stephen Spielberg to come and do workshops on how to make films around the stories that young activists are working on," the former President said in May 2017.

The Hill: South Dakota town unveils Barack Obama statue ...

The bronze statue is the newest addition to the town's City of Presidents, which places life-size statues of past U.S. presidents along the streets and sidewalks of Rapid City.

The statue, which was constructed by local artist James Van Nuys, took roughly two years to complete.

President Obama did such an admirable job of balancing the hardest job in the world with maintaining strong, healthy family relationships. I love that his statue conveys his dedication to his family while serving as President.

WaPo OpEd - Karen Tumulty
We need someone who can lift us up again. Enter President Obama.

An open letter to Barack Obama:

Mr. President, it is time. You must speak. Your country needs you.

Eleven summers ago, as you accepted the Democratic nomination for president, you announced: “Tonight, I say to the people of America, to Democrats and Republicans and independents across this great land: Enough. This moment — this election — is our chance to keep, in the 21st century, the American promise alive.”

Of course, we knew then that our nation had deep political differences, and would continue to. Only the most naive among us would have expected the election of the first African American president to come about with no backlash.

But would anyone have anticipated that within a dozen years, we would hear another president tell four nonwhite congresswomen — three of whom were born in this country — to “go back” to where they came from?

Donald Trump’s tweets over the weekend were the basest kind of bigotry, the oldest of racist tropes. And they were a reminder that in the eyes of some, who apparently include our current president, people of color will never be seen as fully American, regardless of how many generations their families have been part of this nation’s story or how much they achieve as individuals.

President Obama, I understand your reluctance to weigh in on Trump’s latest transgression. You are a respecter of norms, including the one dictating that former presidents steer clear of criticizing their successors. And for all the barriers you shattered, racism was never a topic upon which you seemed eager to hold forth.

But silence now is unacceptable. It is time to make yourself heard.

We have long since given up expectations that anyone in Trump’s own party will do or say anything to call him out for what he is. The few who tried at the beginning have capitulated, been driven from office or walked away.

For Trump, racism is not a moral failing; it is a political tactic. None of us can really claim to understand what is in his heart, but the cynicism of his actions is apparent, and it must be exposed for what it is.

No one knows that better than you do. Trump launched his political career by spreading a blatantly racist lie that you had been born in Africa.

At the time, Americans could still be hopeful enough about who we were to write him off as a buffoon. You even joked about it. As Trump sat fuming in the audience at the 2011 White House correspondents’ dinner, you released what you said was your “official birth video.” It was a clip from “The Lion King.”

But he was just getting started. Birtherism turned out to be Trump’s original sin, the one from which so many others have followed — the 2015 presidential announcement speech in which Trump branded Mexican immigrants as drug dealers and rapists, his call for a ban on Muslims entering the country, his claim that a judge of Mexican descent born in Indiana was incapable of ruling fairly on a case involving Trump University, his declaration that there were “very fine people on both sides” of the deadly clashes between hate-fueled white supremacists and protesters in Charlottesville.

There was a political calculation behind every one of those vile statements, and as repulsed as we are with his latest racist rant, it is possible to see the calculation that is at work here as well.

Trump knows Democrats will set aside their internal differences, as they should, to rally around the four, who represent their party’s more liberal, more youthful edge. He intends to make Reps. Ayanna Pressley (Mass.), Rashida Tlaib (Mich.), Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (N.Y.) and Ilhan Omar (Minn.) the faces of the Democratic Party, as he wants America to see it.

“These are people that if they don’t like it here, they can leave,” he said Monday. “They hate our country. They hate it, I think, with a passion.”

The irony was rich, given how incessantly Trump himself criticized this country before he was elected, and how even his campaign slogan — “Make America Great Again” — denigrated both the nation and the progress it has made.

President Obama, what we need more than anything else right now is someone who can lift the country’s sights again. Someone who can charge us, as you once did, with a mission to “march into the future. Let us keep that promise, that American promise, and in the words of scripture hold firmly, without wavering, to the hope that we confess.”

Find your voice again. Reclaim your legacy. Do it now. It won’t wait until your memoirs.
