Podcasts - What Are You Listening To?
I am partial to listening to podcasts. I can go about whittling, cooking or hand quilting at the same time as listening to interesting subjects.
I enjoy almost all NPR pods...Wait, Wait, Dont Tell Me, This American Life, Hidden Brain, Radio Lab. For legal stuff, Stay Tuned with Preet, for politics, Al Franken and Pod Save America.
I actually subscribe to way too many on Spotify (all free) but sometimes I'm just in the mood for something quirky like Moth Radio Hour - stories told live with no notes. TED Radio Hour is always good.
I'm always looking for interesting pods, so look forward to suggestions here.

I can’t watch true crime TV, but I love me some true crime podcasts. I like My Favorite Murder (I have to binge it while I’m in the mood, because as fun as it is, a little goes a long way).
Criminal is good. I really like Phoebe Judge’s voice, and the stories are interesting.
I like Crime Junkies. (I mean, it’s OK, but I have to shut down the lawyer in me who wants to scream, “Stop with the ‘it’s just circumstantial evidence’ already. ALL evidence with the single exception of eyewitness testimony is circumstantial! *DNA* evidence is circumstantial! The diminution in value of circumstantial evidence exists only on TV!”)

Given that, check out True Crime Bull**it. It’s a thoughtful aka not murder porn podcast about Israel Keys. You may enjoy it.Maybenaut wrote: ↑Thu Apr 29, 2021 9:47 pm I can’t watch true crime TV, but I love me some true crime podcasts. I think one of the reasons it grabbed my attention is because unbeknownst to me, he and I were a lot of the same places at the same time. Mainly in the PNW.

I like Naritiv Live with Zev Shalev. It’s on Podbeans and the Apple podcast app. Also you can find the videos of the show sometimes on Twitter.
It’s very political. Noel Castler, Lincoln’s Bible*, and Greg Olear are frequent guests, as well as Andrew Laughler. Many journalists, too.
* That’s her Twitter handle. Does anyone know who she is in real life?

Lore: for bedtime stories
Swindled: well researched stories about frauds and those who perpetrate them.
American Shadows: a new podcast about all kinds of weird historical stuff.
Sleepy: Otis has a soothing deep voice and reads chapters from old books. Perfect for falling asleep.
Today in True Crime. The title says it all.

Sleepy is a new one for me. I need that.
Right now I'm listening to a fun BBC podcast. "A movie, Kim Jong-un and a devastating cyber attack. The story of the Sony hack. How the Lazarus Group hackers caused mayhem in Hollywood and for Sony Pictures Entertainment.
And this is just the beginning…

I am listening to the Magnus Archives on You Tube.
Dark and macabre, but not enough to keep you up at night, not everyone's cup of tea, but I am enjoying them.

Season 6 is out now.
Right now I am consuming "Renegade " with Obama and Springsteen. Makes me feel better, makes me think, a good space.
Re: Podcasts - What Are You Listening To?
I often listen to Mary Trump's podcast, depending on the guest. She is very sharp and asks excellent questions and has an easy rapport with her guests.
I highly recommend the current one with her guest, Ellie Mystal. He is very liberal and I don't always agree with him but he's always funny. This particular episode they discuss many of the topics y'all are passionate about (SCOTUS, the Constitution and its problems, the current problems with the Democratic Party) and he's right about all of it.

I listen to Newscast from the BBC and have been for years. Gives the day in review, behind the scenes at the BBC sort of thing. They try to be a bit light. It's where I found out about Wordle. The host played on the show and was very pleased when he won. So he said the solution out loud, because he didn't realize you're not supposed to. He apologized the next day, but it's that sort of show.
The BBC has also launched a spinoff of Newscast, called, Ukrainecast if you can tolerate 40 minutes of bleakness.

Great Olear’s podcast Prevail is often very interesting. This week he’s re-running a couple from 2021 about Ukraine. All the “commercials” during the show are done by Greg and his team.

Discovered this a while back and have really enjoyed it: Rivals: Music's Greatest Feuds
If you've ever wondered why the folks in a certain band seemed to hate each other, this will cover it.

"What Roman Mars can learn about Con Law" - Used to be "what Trump can teach us about constitutional law" as he craps all over it, but has evolved into more general SCOTUS topics. Elizabeth Joh has a voice I could listen to for hours.
"Twenty Thousand Hertz" - topics of sound in movies, games, devices. Lots of things I never really thought about. Introduced me to the Wilhelm Scream. Now I hear it everywhere.
And, of course, Wait Wait Don't Tell Me.

Re: Podcasts - What Are You Listening To?
It took watching American Greed for at least 5 years for me to understand money is #1 in these people's lives. I saw the pattern of how they operated but couldn't understand the why. I had an "experience" when I fully realized their priorities and values were so different from mine. I had not grown up with or been around "money is everything" people.Notaperson wrote: ↑Fri Mar 11, 2022 4:56 pmAs someone who has seen every episode of American Greed, I think I'll enjoy this one. So thanks.

May I suggest True Crime Bullsh*t? Seasons 1,2,4 and 5 are a deep dive into one serial murderer. The host discusses the ethics of the true crime genre and humanizes the victims, is kind/conscious of the killers family as opposed to other podcasts that feel like “murder porn”. I was sucked in because of what I mentioned, the FBI agreement to limit publicity to gain his cooperation and the fact I frequented areas at similar times he was known to select his victims.Maybenaut wrote: ↑Thu Apr 29, 2021 9:47 pm I can’t watch true crime TV, but I love me some true crime podcasts.
