He/she begins high speed pursuit anyway. Audiences cheer as news copter follows.

Police car misses a sharp turn, careening onto a crowded sidewalk, killing a bystander. Target escapes.

Public decries reckless police chase. They should never take a chance like that.

(something like that actually happened in KC many many years ago.)

Your brain works like mine, because I saw it as metaphorical for Simone.

Hello all,
(new Olympic topic) Can anyone tell me why I keep hearing horns tooting during the swim events? They are very frequent, do not seem to be connected to "last lap" kind of signals. Who is tooting so much and why?
I asked google and found a reddit thread on the topic but the commenters were just complaining, no one was explaining, so I thought I'd ask here.
Thanks in advance for any insight.

One problem with the Olympics being in Japan is that it requires some effort for those of us in the USA to avoid news about final scores before we watch the matches.

Our SIL is avoiding all news to preserve his ignorance. ;)

Yeah, I caught the end of the US vs. Netherlands women's soccer match this morning at 7 AM MT. I am sure they will replay it in prime time on NBC tonight. I won't spoil it by posting the score. ;)

TOKYO, July 31 (Reuters) - Simone Biles withdrew from the vault and uneven bar apparatus finals at the Tokyo Olympics on Saturday as the U.S. gymnast continued to wrestle with mental health issues.

Biles had earlier stunned the Tokyo Games when she dropped out of the team competition following a poor opening vault and then decided not to defend her all-around crown.

The 24-year-old, however, might yet make another appearance at the Tokyo Games having not ruled herself out for floor exercise on Monday and beam on Tuesday.
Not surprising. Those are the 2 most dangerous routines. In practice, she fell flat on her back after the Yurchenko vault.

I love this commercial from Dick's Sporting Goods:

They have a 30 second version which is the one I've seen on TV.

I've loved and shopped at Dick's since its announcement to no longer carry assault rifles after the Margery Stone shootings.

This video is the BEST!!!

Pink offers to pay fines for Norwegian team fined for wearing shorts instead of bikini bottoms

Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter Pink is not only using her voice to help advocate for other women—she's offering to pay the fines of a Norway women's beach handball team after they opted to wear shorts instead of bikini bottoms during their match at the European Beach Handball Championship. “I’m VERY proud of the Norwegian female beach handball team FOR PROTESTING THE VERY SEXIST RULES ABOUT THEIR ‘uniform,’” the musician tweeted on Saturday. “The European handball federation SHOULD BE FINED FOR SEXISM. Good on ya, ladies. I’ll be happy to pay your fines for you. Keep it up.”

The Disciplinary Committee of the European Handball Federation (EHF) fined the team $1,768, or €150 per player, last Monday for "improper clothing," CBS News reported. The bikini requirement hasn't applied to beach volleyball players since 2012, according to International Handball Federation rules CBS News obtained. While male athletes wear shorts, the rules maintain that "female athletes must wear bikini bottoms" that have "a close fit," be "cut on an upward angle toward the top of the leg" and a depth of no more than 10 centimeters on the sides.

Katinka Haltvik, a player on the national team, told NRK in April she knows people who have opted out of the sport because of the uniform. "At first I thought it was very uncomfortable,” she said. “One becomes more concerned that the panties should not go astray than playing handball."

The women’s team thanked all of its supporters in an Instagram post. “Thank you so much for all the support ❤️🥺 We really appreciate all the love we have received🙏🏼You’re the best 👊🏼💥” the team said in the caption of the post.

MOSCOW (AP) — Belarusian Olympic sprinter Krystsina Tsimanouskaya, who plans to seek refuge in Europe after accusing team officials of trying to force her to leave the Tokyo Games early, said Tuesday that officials from her country “made it clear” she would face punishment if she returned home.

Tsimanouskaya, who had criticized the management of her team on social media, said officials hustled her to the airport and tried to put her on a plane back to Belarus, where the autocratic government has relentlessly stifled dissent and any criticism. She said she hopes to continue her career, but for now her safety remains a priority.

In the dramatic standoff, several countries offered her help, and Poland granted her a humanitarian visa Monday. She plans to fly to Warsaw later in the week, according to an activist group that is helping her.

Biles was cleared to participate on the balance beam. She had to reduce twist elements in order to be cleared to participate. Usually recovering from the twistees takes a long time, starting from the basics of gymnastics.

On top of that, her aunt suddenly died during the week after she had withdrawn from competition and just before she competed.

She won the bronze medal.

I hadn't read this post before now. But last night I had the same thought when I saw Canada, France & UK had multi-colored athletes with a vast range of accents. They were so happy to win medals for their new home countries.
