Several experts contacted by The Washington Post said people should keep covering their faces on planes once it is no longer required if they are feeling ill or have compromised immune systems. And even absent those conditions, many said they believe mask-wearing is a sound idea in environments like planes.

“Different respiratory pathogens may circulate at different times of the year and in different areas of the world,” Lin Chen, director of the Travel Medicine Center at Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge, Mass., and an associate professor at Harvard Medical School, said in an email. “So when flying with travelers from anywhere/everywhere, it’s a good idea to wear masks.”
I have no plans for air travel until September. I'm not even sure if that trip to Europe is going to happen. But I think once this pandemic is over, I will never travel without a supply of masks again. I'm used to seeing people in airports and on planes wearing masks. I never thought I'd be one of them, but I guess I am.

The nation’s top aviation regulator is suggesting that local police around the country should file charges more often against unruly airline passengers and that airports should clamp down on alcohol sales.

Federal Aviation Administration chief Stephen Dickson said that every week, police are asked to be there when a flight lands after an incident involving passengers, including cases in which they assault flight attendants.

“Nevertheless, many of these passengers were interviewed by local police and released without criminal charges of any kind,” Dickson said in letters to airport officials. “When this occurs, we miss a key opportunity to hold unruly passengers accountable for their unacceptable and dangerous behavior.”

Dickson noted in the letters dated Wednesday that the FAA has proposed civil fines against dozens of passengers in recent months, but the agency has no authority to file criminal charges.

It doesn't really fly yet, the FAA is the unfriendly object in the sky
US regulator grounds Virgin Galactic space planes as it investigates July flight
  • Flight to edge of space veered off course during descent
Virgin criticizes ‘misleading characterizations’ of incident

Virgin Galactic space planes, which the British billionaire Richard Branson used to launch his journey into space in July, have been temporarily grounded by the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) while it conducts an investigation into an issue that occurred during the 11 July flight.

“Virgin Galactic may not return the SpaceShipTwo vehicle to flight until the FAA approves the final mishap investigation report or determines the issues related to the mishap do not affect public safety,” the FAA said in a statement to the Guardian on Thursday.

The announcement came shortly after an investigation was initiated into the 11 July incident with Branson’s flight on his own spaceship, which “deviated from its air traffic control clearance” as it was landing back on American soil, according to the FAA.

The Guardian has contacted the Virgin Galactic for comment on this update.

Branson’s flight was surrounded by much fanfare and criticism, with many perceiving it as a symbol of wealth gaps and questioning the carbon footprint of the missions. It came almost at the same time that fellow billionaire Jeff Bezos flew into space in his own craft.

The problem with Branson’s flight arose when a yellow light flashed on the console of the vehicle when it was landing, a sign that the flight was “too shallow and the nose of the ship was insufficiently vertical”, a New Yorker report said on Wednesday.

In a statement to the Guardian, Virgin Galactic denied claims made in the report, terming it a host of “misleading characterizations” of the incident.

“Unity 22 was a safe and successful test flight that adhered to our flight procedures and training protocols,” read the statement. “When the vehicle encountered high-altitude winds which changed the trajectory, the pilots and systems monitored the trajectory to ensure it remained within mission parameters.”

The statement acknowledged that while the flight eventually did divert from its assigned path, it was “a controlled and intentional flight path that allowed Unity 22 to successfully reach space”.

In response to the FAA’s investigation, the company pointed out that it followed its required regulations, such as maintaining its path within the lateral confines, but it did drop below its assigned altitude for one minute and 41 seconds “as a result of the trajectory adjustment”.

A Las Vegas man who berated a flight crew and passengers and growled like a dog on an American Airlines flight Monday from Los Angeles to Salt Lake City has been cited for public intoxication and disorderly conduct.

Video shows the man standing and confronting a flight attendant at the front of the plane. The flight attendant can be heard telling the man to return to his seat and sit down.

Once seated, the man growled like a dog while taking his mask on and off his face, displayed the middle finger and swore at flight attendants, later yelling “God bless America” and screaming “Joe Biden!” according to video taken by fellow passenger Dennis Busch.

Busch also wrote on Facebook that the man verbally targeted an Asian woman, saying she and her companion “didn’t belong here.”

I can't find any reason to fly anywhere. It's too random now, there's WAY too many entitled-acting morons on these flights, it just doesn't seem like a valid form of transport any longer.

I don't understand. The Bill of Rights does not say that one has an unalienable right to fly on airplanes. Why don't the airlines simply ban unruly conduct, and honor each other's bans. And no mask, no flying. It's not rocket science, people. Get the lawyers to write a disclaimer for the airlines: "we reserve the right to ban people for the rest of their life if they threaten the safe operation of the plane." Once there are a few high profile bans, perhaps the problem will improve. And stop serving liquor. (Though I like my little bottle of wine on a flight. If I ever fly again.) Minimum fines will double, starting at $500, and go up to $3,000 for repeat offenders.
There should be NO repeat offenders. The first time someone refuses to wear a mask, they should be escorted from the airport, never to return. Deny listed! If you can't comply with the simple rules, then you should forfeit the privilege of flying.

Chicago Woman Late for Flight Allegedly Made False Bomb Threat at Florida Airport
Matt Masterson | September 8, 2021 1:15 pm

A Chicago woman who arrived late for a scheduled flight allegedly told staff at a Florida airport that there was a bomb inside her checked luggage. The false report was made after she’d been informed she would not be able to get on the plane, officials said.

Marina Verbitsky, 46, was arrested at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport on Monday evening and charged with one count of false reporting concerning planting a bomb, explosive or weapon of mass destruction, officials from the Broward County Sheriff’s Office said in a press release.

The incident occurred at 8:45 p.m. Monday as Verbitsky and others arrived at their gate inside the airport. But after being told the plane had already left the gate and had begun to taxi, Verbitsky allegedly told airport employees there was a bomb inside her checked luggage that had been loaded onto the plane.

Those employees contacted sheriff’s deputies, who arrived at the scene and immediately took Verbitsky into custody. The plane returned to the airport and was evacuated as a bomb squad and detectives from the sheriff’s office began searching for a bomb.

Hay nao, she TOLD them about the bomb, and she even offered to help take the bomb out of her luggage when the plane got back and they could put it in the trash bin. No trouble at all, just bring the plane back for a few minutes and pick me up. :batting:

Delta bans over 1,600 people, urges other airlines to share ‘no fly’ lists
By Stephanie WeaverPublished 1 day ago
NewsFOX TV Digital Team.

ATLANTA - Delta Air Lines has put more than 1,600 people on its "no fly" list in the wake of passengers and staff being harassed on flights amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

In an internal memo obtained and reviewed by FOX Television Stations, the company said it made its decision in an effort to keep crewmembers and customers safe.

"At Delta, we now have more than 1,600 people on our ‘no fly’ list, and we’ve submitted more than 600 banned names to the FAA in 2021 as part of their Special Emphasis Enforcement Program," Delta told all flight attendants Wednesday. "We’ve also asked other airlines to share their ‘no fly’ list to further protect airline employees across the industry – something we know is top of mind for you as well. A list of banned customers doesn’t work as well if that customer can fly with another airline."

Reasons for individuals facing a ban from the airline include harassment of staff and not complying with Delta's mask requirements.

Airlines have full discretion to ban passengers who violate their policies. The company’s internal no-fly list is different than the federal no-fly list, which is part of the U.S. government’s Terrorist Screening Database and prohibits anyone who "may pose a threat to civil aviation or national security" from boarding a commercial aircraft.

Generally, in order to be placed on the federal list, the government must have information that the person presents "a threat of committing terrorism" to the aircraft or the U.S. homeland or U.S. facilities.

The FAA said this week that airlines have reported 4,385 events involving rowdy passengers this year, with 73% of them involving passengers who refuse to wear face masks, which are required on flights by federal rule.

This week Hawaiian Airline had 2 incidents within less than 24 hours. A flight attendant was walking down the aisle to collect trash when a passenger jumped up and punched the flight attendant in the chest & head. Also, a plane two hours in the air on the way to Seattle had to turn back to Honolulu because a passenger refused to wear a mask and caused a "disturbance."

There are frequent incidents caused by people wearing their face mask improperly, such as under the nose, aggravating the other passengers.

So far, there doesn't seem to be a loss of cabin staff, but the employees are using their paid leave more frequently.

'Absolutely outrageous': Ryanair passengers who received Covid refunds banned from flying
RYANAIR has barred passengers with Covid refunds from travelling with the airlines again, unless they return the money.

Low-cost airline Ryanair barred the passengers who received refunds from flights affected by Covid unless they return the money - in some cases days before travel, MoneySavingExpert revealed.

Some Ryanair passengers who booked flights this year were told by the airline that they could only fly if they gave back the refund.

MSE spoke to three holidaymakers who were told they could not fly again until they returned the money. The refunded amounts were between £400 to £630.

Affected passengers reportedly received their original refunds from their credit card company via the 'chargeback' process, after Ryanair first refused to give the money back.

The affected holidaymakers initially booked Ryanair flights for summer 2020. The flights weren't cancelled but they chose not to travel due to Government advising them not to visit those destinations.

Flight diverted.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/transpor ... nt-attack/
The flight attendant apparently bumped the passenger while moving through the first-class cabin, according to Julie Hedrick, president of the Association of Professional Flight Attendants, which represents those who fly for American Airlines. The flight attendant apologized, but the passenger left his seat, confronted her as she stood in the aircraft’s galley, then punched her in the face, Hedrick said.

Unruly passengers are straining the system for keeping passengers safe in the sky

Hedrick said the flight attendant was taken to a hospital for treatment of broken bones in her face. She was later released.

The incident echoed one from earlier this year in which a Southwest Airlines flight attendant lost several teeth after a passenger allegedly punched her in the face. The attacks come on the heels of an increase in incidents in which passengers have shouted obscenities, pushed and shoved flight attendants, harassed other passengers or even attempted to open the cockpit door.

Hedrick said problem passengers are not a new phenomenon, but recent incidents have put flight attendants increasingly on edge. The Federal Aviation Administration, which is charged with enforcing rules on airplanes, has seen a sixfold increase over two years in its investigations of unruly passengers.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics ... den-chant/
Southwest Airlines is conducting an internal investigation after one of its pilots reportedly said a phrase used in right-wing circles as a stand-in for swearing at President Biden over the plane’s public address system — apologizing to customers and insisting it does not condone employees sharing personal political opinions while on the job.

The airline faced turbulence on social media over the weekend after an Associated Press journalist was on a flight from Houston to Albuquerque on Friday when she heard the pilot use the phrase “let’s go Brandon,” writing that it brought on “audible gasps from some passengers.” Audio of the pilot’s greeting, which The Washington Post could not independently verify, was separately circulating widely on social media.

:snippity:

The phrase has been used as a “code” by conservative critics of the president since a chant of “F--- Joe Biden!” broke out among a crowd at Alabama’s Talladega Superspeedway in early October. An NBC Sports reporter, who was interviewing NASCAR driver Brandon Brown live on air at the time, said “You can hear the chants from the crowd, ‘Let’s go Brandon!’”

That incident went viral, as some Trump supporters claimed journalists sought to censor anti-Biden sentiment, and since then many Republicans have used the phrase as a “G-rated substitute for its more vulgar three-word cousin,” the Associated Press reported. :snippity:

American Airlines cancels more flights; total tops 2,300

https://www.reuters.com/business/aerosp ... ce=twitter
Weather and staffing-led turbulence stretched into a fourth day for American Airlines (AAL.O), with the top U.S. carrier cancelling more flights on Monday to push the total number to nearly 2,300.

The airline said it canceled 340 flights, or 6% of its total planned flights on Monday, as of 11 a.m. ET.

Staffing shortages have hit American Airlines, Southwest Airlines Co (LUV.N) and Spirit Airlines Inc (SAVE.N) in particular, as they ramp up flights ahead of the holiday season but face problems finding enough pilots and flight attendants.

"Flight Attendant staffing at American is strained and reflects what is happening across the industry as we continue to deal with pandemic-related issues," flight attendants' union APFA said.
