Okay, yes, that is VERY weird. All the backup band members are cardboard cutouts, which is weird enough. (Why would the camera pan the cutouts? Strange.) Then I realized that they are ALL pictures of Mason Williams playing the various instruments.

I remember the tune well when it came out in the summer of 1968. I admired it. Mason Williams did a number of interesting things. I really liked the "Them" poems ("How 'bout them moose-goosers", etc.) And the Mason Williams' "Reading Matter".

I knew he had quite an ego, but this is off the scale.

Whole lot of cloning going on. ;)

I remember seeing Mason Williams performing this on The Smothers Brothers Show.

In the original LP recording Mason Williams played both the 6 string and 12 string guitar parts via overdubbing.

Me too.

Here's a great cover version of "Classical Gas".

And if you liked that Tommy Emmanuel version, here's another variation:

Its just stage setting, and almost certainly not his doing.

This is the instrumental version of "lip-syncing". He is playing just enough to make it look real, but the actual sound is off the released single.

There were very few actual live performances on TV of any band on any show. The record companies wouldn't allow it in case something went wrong. The Ed Sullivan show was just about the only show that had the power to get it done.

Tommy Emmanuel is the best! I’ve seen him live a bunch of times.

Yeah, watched it. Meh. :? That was it? It's already over? -- re-entry now. :smoking:

How much does it cost to buy a ticket on this thing? I think an amusement park is a much better value.

It's essentially lipsync over the studio recording.

There's no mic on his guitar, and the orchestra isn't actually present.

Ted? That movie was made by the inept Ron Maxwell, Southern apologist and low-mediocre movie director. Turner only provided the money.

Not so good sir!!! :fingerwag: He also was an "actor" in it, managing to get a speaking part with Robert Duvall
