Nah. It's nice enough. Big county with low population. Less than one person per square mile country. Palmer moved from sheriff to county commissioner - from LEO to politician. So, he's locked in his retirement.

It's absolutely beautiful in Grant County

I took occasion to drive across part of the county during a trip about 18 months ago. It was along a route that cuts pretty much dead-center through Oregon. That morning we left Madras and ended up not far from Juntura. We took a route that passed through Post and other towns and eventually crossed the north end of Malheur Forest joining 395 around Seneca.

Amazing country

But I will say this. Reasonable or not, knowing who the Sheriff was, I was very nervous when I was driving in Grant County.

I recommmend a trip through the middle of Oregon to anyone who is able, at least once in your lifetime. Just know there is a lot of "middle" to Oregon, so plan wisely

There is definitely a lot of middle in Oregon, and I have grown used to trips out there taking literally all day to drive. So much so, that when I go back east, my internal trip timer is thrown out of whack. Oregon - one page in the map book - ten hour drive corner to corner. Massachusetts - one page in the map book - an hour drive at best corner to corner - your car barely gets up to highway speed, and you have to take your foot off the gas because you're already there. But, just as beautiful (at least to my eye).

Tough decision this morning but it's time to move on.
Thank you all who have entrusted me with the duties and responsibilities of being your Sheriff for the last 19 years.
I look forward in working with our County Court as they (we) transition a new Sheriff for Grant County.
After close to 35 years as a deputy, patrolman and as a Sheriff, it's time to hang up the gear and find a new gig.
To all my supporters and people who have encouraged me and entrusted me....Thank you.

Why now? Did he misspell “grift”? (“gig”)

Wonder if there was blowback from his recent advice to domestic abusers to try to get their conviction(s) expunged so they could buy guns.

Nahhh.. that would appeal to his base..

Possibility of footage of him by accidently supporting sensible law enforcement would be more likely to cause him to resign..

More likely - his has been caught embezzeling or abusing people and he is resigning as part of a deal.

There is "stuff", which is totally not verified, on twitter that he is facing a lawsuit about something (I checked the OR court site and nothing filed since the Oregonian lawsuit).

Palmer did not give a reason why he planned to resign his office in a few months, but he was heard to utter under his breath that he'd had enough.

"He'd had enough.."

Lying, cheating, stealing and supporting criminals and domestic terrorists...

He is probably well qualified for a position in Donnie's Cabinet.

Stuff coming out about (maybe) the reasons for Sheriff Rosey's resignation.
County pays more than $18,000 for five-month administrative leave
Officials decline to discuss sheriff's deputy situation

Her husband works as a deputy sheriff and is on leave also. It gets curiouser and curiouser.

Grant County sheriff, deputy botched arrest in 'egregious abuse of power'
Updated Jun 12, 2016

JOHN DAY -- A deputy protected his relatives from blame in a random shooting by arresting the 911 caller who reported it, resulting in a foul-up that raises fresh questions about embattled Grant County Sheriff Glenn Palmer.

The district attorney didn't pursue a case, instead rebuking Palmer and his deputy. The county quietly paid the caller $12,000 from its insurer to fend off a lawsuit.

"This incident is the most egregious abuse of power I have ever seen," said attorney Edie Rogoway, who represented the arrested man.
In the shooting case, Palmer approved the arrest and later promoted the deputy to undersheriff, his second-in-command. This is the latest in a series of questionable actions by Palmer to come to public attention in recent months. He faces 10 complaints that he violated standards for police officers. The complaints, including two from John Day city officials, list accusations that Palmer put the county at risk through of his association with the militants, that he's a law enforcement "security leak" and that he has improperly deployed civilian deputies.

Palmer and Undersheriff Zach Mobley didn't return telephone messages or respond to written questions. On Friday, Mobley's attorney didn't address the questions but wrote that "Mobley's reputation is very important to him personally, and also is vital to his ability to work in his profession."

Wow. That story is vile.

In short, some relatives of his left their 10-year-olds with loaded guns, and they were shooting them in all directions. So to cover it up, they arrested the guy who called 911 to report it.

Grant County Sheriff's Office Deputy Arrested By State Police
Oregon State Police arrested a Grant County Sheriff’s Office deputy Monday on suspicion of child neglect, attempted adult rape and assault.

In a written release, OSP said it received a request to investigate Deputy Tyler Smith on Friday. Criminal charges had not yet been filed by the Grant County District Attorney’s Office as of Monday afternoon.

Smith has been on administrative leave at least two weeks, according to an Aug. 28 email from Grant County District Attorney Jim Carpenter.

Carpenter could not immediately be reached for comment. Grant County Sheriff Glenn Palmer hung up without speaking when reached for comment on his cellphone Monday.
