Thank you, Richard. Absolutely, this thread should begin with those we've already lost who meant so much to us.

... and thank you, SueDB for starting the new thread.

Yeah Foggy, no pressure here because us Obots are so alive & well, living the good life with families & friends who love us, unlike the haters we deal with. I thought that Loretta Fuddy might be remembered here though. Her legacy will be remembered here in Hawaii in the way it should because of the good she did & no one of any consequence here even knows about Birthers, let alone cares about them.

I had a thought though about the the fact that Orly's latest friend in HI, the nutjob who happens to live on MOLOKAI??? [About 8K people live on that island & I won't take the time to look up the guy's name] but... HMMM?? Did he & Orly kill Dr Fuddy??

We will never know because the conspiracy is so vast. May God help us all/

SueDB was a big part of this board for years and his unique voice is greatly missed. He was tough and funny and smart and cranky. He had a wide range of knowledge and interests. He loved his wife. He was a good guy. RIP SueDB.

raicha said it so well, I won't attempt something on my own. I considered Bill a special cyber friend. As well as guiding me when I finally joined Twitter, he and Realist introduced me to TFB. We DM-ed a fair amount. I'm missing him. :( :( :(

For everyone's information, many of us have honored Bill in the Rest in Peace general thread.

We'll miss his wit and his smarts, and yes, we'll miss his crankiness too. :brokenheart:

I am so saddened by this. It reminds me how we had talked about having a meetup next, accessible to our NW contingent. I will miss SueB so much. I remember when he let me know that he was a Guy named Sue, not! So many years ago. I am so sad.

It also reminds me to not forget that TFB has been a source of real friendship, in addition to pondering, pontificating and kvetching. Lucky for us.

This ain't right! Fogbow without SueDB? How is that possible? :crying: :crying: He was supposed to be getting better. Damn! Cancer pisses me off! :madguy:
:crying: :crying: :crying:

This is some stuff I had wanted to say when SueDB told us about his cancer but couldn't find an appropriate way to do so (i.e. one that would have helped him in his fight), but now seems like a good time to talk about how to stop this from happening again. Every time cancer takes someone I care about, as if to demand my surrender, I think of the words of my favorite hero of the Revolution, Thomas Jefferson:

"I have not yet begun to fight."

Cancer may have won this round, but it has yet to face a full broadside. I don't intend to get mad TRL, I intend to get even.

Cancer is just another bully that would be powerless if we simply understood ourselves better. Our bodies are incredibly deadly cancer fighting machines, it's only when some cancer gets lucky and takes out a part of our defense mechanism (or is helped by a sapper -- some sort of chemical or radiation) that it poses a threat. Too, also, like any cowardly bully, when it's threatened it hides behind our own defenses to protect it from external attempts to poison it or burn it out.

SueDB took drugs to help him deal with his Crohn's disease. An unfortunate side effect of these drugs was that they blocked a part of his cancer defense mechanism (I can't find the thread where he talked about this, but the drug inhibited a protein that was named something like tumor necrosis factor). As a result, the chemotherapy wasn't enough to beat back the cancer to the point where his body could keep it under control.

Another way of looking at it is that enough of the cancer cells were protected by his body's defense mechanisms that they were able to keep a foothold. One possible way to deal with this is to find a way to turn off the mechanisms that stop cells from dividing while their DNA is damaged*. This would effect cancer cells preferentially because they are always dividing while other cells would generally have time for the damage to be repaired before they entered the division cycle.

* Chemo and radiation kill cancer cells by causing massive DNA damage which results in catastrophic mitosis if the cells try to divide.

In other words, it would make the treatment more effective -- maybe enough to make sure the patient lives long enough to die of something else. Which would effectively be a cure for cancer (a real cure for cancer is a whole bunch of other problems, not just one). I'm sorry I couldn't do anything to help Bill, but I believe we can develop the tools to allow patients to win the fight inside their body and make it so that while many people may still die WITH cancer, no one dies OF cancer anymore.

Bill may have lost his battle (as we all will one day), but I think the strength, courage, and dignity he showed in his fight to live are far more important. I think it's the job of medical science to level the playing field so that traits like these are decisive. Because I think that giving people a fighting chance in a fair "court" is, to me, the essence of what it means to

SUE THE BASTARDS!

Rest in peace old friend. We're still fighting for you.

I'm so sad to hear this.

I had just asked about him in one of our private groups like a week ago.

:(

May the four winds blow you safely home. <3
