At least 304 dead in Haiti in wake of 7.2-magnitude earthquake
https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/ha ... story.html
This is heartbreaking. And they’re about to get pounded by a tropical storm.PORT AU PRINCE, Haiti — A massive 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck Haiti on Saturday morning, killing hundreds of people and shaking buildings from the neighboring Dominican Republic to Jamaica and Cuba, as the international community confronted the prospect of a major escalation in the humanitarian crisis already facing one of the hemisphere's most deeply troubled nations.
Saturday's quake was stronger, though centered farther from the capital, than the devastating 2010 temblor that killed more than 220,000, prompting foreign governments and aid agencies to prepare for large numbers of dead, injured and homeless. Officials and witnesses reported heavy damage and fatalities dozens of miles from the epicenter, 7.2 miles northeast of Saint-Louis du Sud, where the quake struck at 8:29 a.m. Haiti's civil protection office reported at least 304 people had died — most of them in the hardest-hit southern and western areas — with hundreds more missing and 1,800 injured. The death toll is expected to rise amid reports that some neighborhoods had been razed.
Government officials, relief agencies and representatives from the United Nations were still assessing the damage, including via reconnaissance flights over the southern and western parts of the country, as a wave of aftershocks continued to hit Haiti. But the sheer force of the temblor and a climbing death toll suggest a devastating new tragedy in the Western Hemisphere’s poorest nation, which has lurched from crisis to crisis for years.
The disaster struck about a month after the assassination of the president, leaving a hobbled interim government in charge of a country so wracked by gang violence and a collapsing rule of law that observers have dubbed it the Somalia of the Caribbean.

Haiti Quake Toll Leaps to Nearly 2,000 Dead as Rain Pelts Survivors
The new casualty figures from Saturday’s quake, including 10,000 injured, come as victims struggled with a storm deluge that could complicate relief efforts.
By Anatoly Kurmanaev and Constant Méheut
Aug. 17, 2021
PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — The death and injury tolls leapt by many hundreds on Tuesday from the weekend earthquake in Haiti’s southern peninsula, as survivors soaked from Tropical Storm Grace struggled to keep safe in makeshift shelters.
Haiti’s National Emergency Operations Center said that as of Tuesday evening the number of dead totaled at least 1,941, with 9,900 injured, compared with the official tallies of about 1,400 dead and 7,000 injured reported 24 hours earlier.
The sharp increases, while not unexpected, pointed to the slow effort to recover victims of the 7.2 quake on Saturday, which affected roughly 1.5 million people in an area about 80 miles west of Port-au-Prince, the capital.
The rain brought by the storm had largely stopped on Tuesday, and many people in afflicted areas were out looking for loved ones, scavenging for supplies and trying to get aid from humanitarian groups, whose efforts were being hampered by severe flooding across the country. Many had sought refuge in the few public buildings spared by the quake.

To the people walking on new lava, please stop doing that. If you break the wafer thin crust and step into the lava river that flows underneath the surface, nobody will come and save you. Search and rescue teams have been instructed not to put themselves in danger so if you get stuck out there, you're on your own. And being on your own while slowly dying in agonizing pain is probably not a fun way to go.
Think of your loved ones and stop this nonsense.

Re: Earthquakes and/or Volcanoes
The True Haiti Earthquake Death Toll Is Much Worse than Early Official Counts
A tool built by the U.S. Geological Survey suggests that the number of fatalities may range from 10,000 to 100,000 or more
By Sara Reardon on August 19, 2021
Haiti is still rebuilding from the massive earthquake that struck 11 years ago, as well as dealing with the fallout of its president’s assassination in July. So the island nation was ill-prepared for the magnitude 7.2 earthquake that hit its western region on August 14. At the time of publication, the official death toll hovers around 2,000, although for the first few critical days after the quake, media reports listed a death toll in the hundreds.
But the true number of deaths is probably at least five to 50 times that number, according to a scientific model from the U.S. Geological Survey. Its tool, known as Prompt Assessment of Global Earthquakes for Response (PAGER), automatically combines information about an earthquake with demographic and other data from the affected region to model the likely scale of the disaster, including deaths and economic impact.
PAGER, which was launched in 2007, does not predict the exact number of fatalities. Rather it estimates the probability that the number lies within a certain range. For the recent earthquake in Haiti, PAGER gives a 35 percent chance that between 10,000 and 100,000 people have died and a 32 percent chance that the death toll will top 100,000.
This earthquake was probably less deadly than the one that hit Haiti in 2010, for which PAGER correctly predicted more than 100,000 deaths. The tool also estimates a 66 percent chance that the cost of damage for this year’s quake lies between $100 million and $10 billion. For comparison, the 2010 earthquake cost between $7 billion and $14 billion

Why does Haiti have so many earthquakes? Here’s what to know
BY DON SWEENEY AND SYRA ORTIZ-BLANES

A magnitude 7.2 earthquake shook Haiti on Aug. 14, causing damage to buildings and infrastructure. Footage streamed via Facebook Live by One Show Pam shows damaged buildings in Les Cayes, Haiti. BY ONE SHOW PAM VIA STORYFUL
For centuries, earthquakes have shaken Haiti, now reeling from a 7.2-magnitude tremor that struck early Saturday. Why are quakes so prevalent on the island nation?
The island of Hispaniola, home to both Haiti and the Dominican Republic, straddles four tectonic plates in the Caribbean ocean, Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology said.
Earthquakes occur along the boundaries of these tectonic plates, which make up the Earth’s crust. These borders are called faults.
Haiti lies at the intersection of the Caribbean Plate and the Gonâve, Hispaniola, and North Hispaniola microplates, the institutions said.
And it’s “caught in the crunch” between the Caribbean and North America plates, where sudden releases of energy in the crust as the two plates grind together cause earthquakes.

Magnitude 7.0 quake strikes Mexico -USGS
Buildings shook in Mexico City on Tuesday night, sending people running into the street as a powerful earthquake struck southwest of the country near the resort of Acapulco.
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said a 7.0 magnitude quake struck 11 miles (17.7 km) northeast of Acapulco, Guerrero.
Civil Protection Authorities of Guerrero state said the quake, initially measured by the USGS at a magnitude of 7.4, caused rock falls and landslides onto roads.
The quake also did damage to buildings in Acapulco, a Reuters witness said.
Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum said there were no immediate reports of serious damage in the capital.
In the Roma Sur neighborhood of Mexico City, lights went off and scared residents rushed out, some wearing little more than pajamas, a Reuters witness said. Residents hurdled together in the rain, holding young children or pets, too worried to return to their homes in the dark.
"It was terrible. It really reminds me of the 1985 quake every time something like this happens," said Yesmin Rizk, a 70-year-old Roma Sur resident.
The USGS said the quake was very shallow, only 7.8 miles (12.5 km) below the surface, which would have amplified the shaking effect.

Iceland Update
A huge change has happened since last viewing. The main vent of former glory still stands but the lave no longer fills and overtops. Instead the upsurge is on one side of the wall and it has blown a hole into it. Lava spurts out of the side of the original cone, well visible, while on the inside only seen on drone footage. In addition on the upper valey floor there are at least two further lave spurts, though unclear if the magma is coming directly from the deep or is diverted from the original cone thru lava channels.
