The video I mentioned last night.

That's an awesome photo, PG.

May 8, the Iceland volcano produced a fountain that was 300-400 meters high (about 1000-1300 feet).

Here's the video positioned to start at the beginning of the huge fountain...

ETA: This live video is looking quite active now (at 6:50pm EDT)...

ETA. a pity that the video has been taken from public view. My guess the author got a good deal with a news agency. The clip did shows the exact rare moments as the lava tipped over the dam and the following minutes as the flow stared to increase and flow down into the valley below.

The Iceland volcano has been filling up the upper valley plateau over the past months. There was an attempt to build up a dam of approx 4 meters high to try and redirect the lave to an area where the flow downwards would be more favourable. The lava just has topped over the dam and is now flowing down a narrow ravine towards the sea. On this path it will severly disrupt some infrastructure in the coming weeks.

Thanks for posting those videos. I've been watching the volcano off and on, but I missed the dam breaking.

I didn't remember that Africa also has some active volcanoes
At least 15 die in lava flows after volcano erupts in Democratic Republic of Congo
More than 500 homes have been destroyed by the lava that has poured into villages, officials and survivors say

Associated Press
Sun 23 May 2021 21.05 BST

At least 15 people died when torrents of lava poured into villages after dark in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, destroying more than 500 homes, officials and survivors said on Sunday.

The eruption of Mount Nyiragongo on Saturday night sent about 5,000 people fleeing from the city of Goma across the nearby border into Rwanda, while another 25,000 others sought refuge to the north-west in Sake, the UN children’s agency said on Sunday.

More than 170 children were still feared missing and Unicef officials said they were organising transit centres to help unaccompanied children in the wake of the disaster.

Goma ultimately was largely spared the mass destruction it suffered the last time the volcano erupted in 2002. Hundreds died then and more than 100,000 people were left homeless. But in outlying villages closer to the volcano, Sunday was marked by grief and uncertainty.

They've had to move people farther away. The easy trail is closed. I've got pretty high expectations that I will see it at night gushing pretty high up in the sky in August.

Here is an interactive 3D model of the iceland volcano recently posted by the Icelandic Museum of Natural History. It is already behind the actual developments in the past 24 hours. The lava is now progressing rather rapidly across the small dry lake bed on its way to the sea...

Here is a live stream of the advancing lava crossing the lake bed...

Note: over the last week the lava flow was very intense as seen at the top of the vulcano. It seems that all this lava was deposited in the valley under the existing crust. The videos of the last couple of days did show how the dark crust suddenly started to split up and glowing lave appeared. Looked like a city at night in aerial view, roads brightly lit up and dark buildings.

Awesome! I had thought no chance I would see it in August, but it's really moving fast. Maybe it will be somewhere more visible without a major trek to see it. Then again, it's a volcano; it will do what it has to do, not what I'd like it to do.

Thanks for all the posts.
