Not necessarily. If someone is giving substantial cooperation that is still ongoing as the sentencing date is about to arrive, the parties can write a joint motion to the judge asking for an adjournment to allow more time for the defendant to assist the government with whatever else he's helping with. That happened a bunch in the MIke Flynn case, including a sentencing hearing getting underway and the judge nearly passing sentence and then adjourning to allow Flynn more time to cooperate. (That worked out well.)

However, this isn't the Mike Flynn case. While we may see a joint motion for a brief adjournment before sentencing, I don't think there's going to be a ton of that. They need Greenberg to corroborate dates and details, but that shouldn't take all that long.

As Joel Greenberg stood inside a federal courtroom pleading guilty as part of a cooperation deal with prosecutors, a plane flying outside towed a banner with an ominous message to a prominent ally of the former Seminole County tax collector: “Tick tock Matt Gaetz.”


“Are you pleading guilty because you are guilty?” Magistrate Judge Leslie R. Hoffman asked Greenberg.

“I am,” he replied.


He could be sentenced to at least 12 years in prison. Greenberg will be required to register as a sex offender when he is released, according to the plea agreement.

Hoffman said Greenberg’s sentencing by District Judge Gregory A. Presnell would likely be set within 75 days. The magistrate judge warned Greenberg that Presnell does not have to accept prosecutors’ sentencing recommendations. Greenberg has 14 days to file an objection to his plea deal.

Greenberg’s attorney, Fritz Scheller, said after the hearing that the U.S. Attorney’s Office had done a “very thorough job” in building its case. Greenberg he said, is “on the path of redemption, rehabilitation and he has a great deal of remorse.”

Greenberg’s cooperation with federal authorities will be a factor in his sentence, and prosecutors could also seek a sentence reduction later if he continues to cooperate after sentencing.

The agreement specifies that Greenberg will have to cooperate with any investigation by prosecutors.

It has been reported that federal authorities are looking into whether Gaetz, a Panhandle congressman and friend of Greenberg’s, had sex with the same 17-year-old Greenberg was accused of trafficking or paid for sex and travel with escorts.

Gaetz has said several times that he has never paid for sex or had sex as an adult with someone underage. Gaetz’s name does not appear in Greenberg’s plea deal.

Greenberg had been meeting with federal prosecutors since last November. If the information he presents is useful and of “substantial assistance” to them, prosecutors will recommend a lower prison sentence, according to the agreement.

So, Greenberg has been cooperating with prosecutors since Nov. That's not good for Gaetz. Iirc Gaetz learned of the investigation into him last Dec.

Greenberg's lawyer's comment about the investigation being "very thorough" grabbed my attention. Greenberg has everything to gain by continuing to cooperate with federal prosecutors. Being a sex offender in any prison is hell. My understanding is that it's worse in federal prisons.

Joe Ellicott, a friend and associate of both Gaetz and Joel Greenburg has been subpoenaed by a grand jury.

The subpoena, which was issued on Dec. 28, says the grand jury is investigating alleged crimes "involving commercial sex acts with adult and minor women, as well as obstruction of justice." It is looking to obtain any communications, documents, recordings and payments the subpoena's recipient had with Ellicott, Gaetz and Greenberg since the start of 2016.

Greenberg admitted this week as part of his plea deal that he recruited women for commercial sex acts and paid them more than $70,000 between 2016 and 2018. He also said he paid at least one underage girl to have sex with him and other men and introduced the underage girl to others who also "engaged in commercial sex acts."

Greenberg screenshotted a lot of the text messages of these conversations and dailybeast got some from "big joe". There was fear the young girl would expose their sex ring.

Gaetz associate Joel Greenberg was already under investigation when he had a private exchange with his one-time sports radio co-host, “Big Joe” Ellicott. In that exchange, conducted over the encrypted messaging app Signal and obtained by The Daily Beast, Ellicott expressed fear that others in their group of friends faced legal jeopardy for having sex with a 17-year-old girl.


Ellicott wrote that a mutual friend, a woman who figures prominently in Greenberg‘s Venmo transactions, “knew [the minor] was underage the whole time, had sex with her, and they both went [to] see other guys.”

Ellicott, who is Venmo friends with Gaetz and a number of women in the alleged sex ring, also acknowledged that “for other guys she brought ___ along to see, that could be trafficking,” using a nickname for the former teen. The Daily Beast has independently verified the young woman’s identity but is withholding her name.

The Signal messages were set to disappear after 30 seconds, but Greenberg—as he’d done with vanishing communications between himself and Roger Stone—screenshotted the message.

Also, I'm hoping that they're taking their time so they can roll up as many of these scumbags as they can get. I'll be sad if the only one arrested is Gaetz.
