2024 Total Solar Eclipse

Do I get extra points for driving a Mitsubishi Eclipse? Absolutely. I hope the weather cooperates. I have been in a 90% area once or twice but never totality. I understand it's a unique experience. Alas, I will just have to watch it on TV. Our fiends in Ohio have a chance. The forecast improv...

I have been following the weather forecast along the path especially NE Ohio. We used to live there and still have a lot of friends. As of now the forecast is mostly cloudy. I could have guessed that. I have never lived in a cloudier place than Canton from October through April.

In high school we weren't allowed to use calculators. In college it was a TI like the resta youse. But the calculator I used at work for 20 years (and still use today when I need to do more than a quick problem with my phone) is the HP 32S II. Me too. I used one at work for about the sam...

I have three different Pickett models. I wish I could get parts. The only parts I've been able to find are used parts on the internet that are in as bad of shape as mine. The folks who had Picketts were always catching up because they worked differently and they were always behind the K&E and P...

I missed the party on the discussion on slide rules and the first scientific calculators. I learned to use a slide rule in freshman engineering class. I bought a used K&E log log decitrig duplex mahogany slide rule. I knew how to use every scale. I could lubricate it and keep it in calibration. ...

I cannot even rotate a PDF with Adobe Reader now

As far as replacements for Microsoft Word and Excel, I've sometimes used Google Docs and Google Sheets for documents I've created on my laptop that I want to also be able to view and edit with my Apple iPhone or iPad. I have dabbled with Google Sheets. One neat thing it will do is import live and h...

So far the forecast for SW Ohio is mostly cloudy skies. I'm going over to the corner to pout. The southern end from the path from Mexico through Texas and into Arkansas looks like it will be mostly overcast. The best forecast is in the Northeast end of the path like Vermont. Gonna be a lot of very ...

Appears the clerk rejected the bond for failing to supply some required financial statements and a few other issues. They can resubmit.

Speaking of cousins.... For most of my life I thought that a cousin of mine was my second cousin. He was actually 3 years older than me and his father, my first cousin, was much older than me by around 20 years. However, I found out my cousin was actually my first cousin, once removed and not a sec...

I happened to have the tv on this morning while I was doing some chores. While waiting for Garland's press conference to start, they had on an analyst to explain a bit about the suit. H/T @Suranis for the additional research. CatholicVote.org is a conservative PAC so it is no surprise the article sugar coats the excommunication and hypocrisy of the Church. To say the excommunication had nothing to do with the molestation is disingenuous. Without the molestation it doesn't happen...

I have to side with Sam on this one. Atheists are a diverse group. Our universal dogma is a lack of dogma and no need for a 'supreme' being to dictate or even inform morality. I find the fairly new meme by theists that "Atheism is a religion" to be amusing. It's meant to be an insult I su...

Okay. Weird. I think it's been on my birthday twice in my life when it's been early, but I don't think it will again in my lifetime. Thanks. My birthday is April 3rd so I recall Easter falling on my birthday at least a few times. It won't happen again until 2067 so I think I have seen the last time...

Why Easter is early this year, I think, although it has been earlier. Actually no, there earlier than normal equinox played no role. According to the Ecclesiastical calendar the Vernal Equinox falls on March 21 regardless of when it really falls. So the earliest Easter can occur is March 22 if the ...

I was surprised to open up this topic and find that at least in the Eastern time zone adding the Leap Day this year pushed the equinox forward into the last hour of March 19th. Of course I had to check out what was going on and it turns out this is the earliest Vernal Equinox in 128 years. The last ...
