Re: Racism in America Becoming Fashionable Again

If our goal is to change the underlying factors, I am not sure that this young woman having her life completely torn apart serves that goal. Who said that? Re: Racism in America Becoming Fashionable Again

W4, I pretty much agree...she was a racist idiot. More importantly, as I think was pointed out upthread, in court testimony this type of 911 call is played, and the obvious "distress" in the caller's voice is emphasized as proof that the caller was in real fear for their life. However, in this case,...

Re: Racism in America Becoming Fashionable Again

I get it. We disagree. But (you knew there was a "but"- haha), some (perhaps rightly) think the way to analyze this is by observing that these two people are of different races. I look at it as they are both human. "Woke" culture picks up on the abuses as if race is all that matters. What if she cam...

Re: Section 230 - Safe Harbor - Social Media Executive Order?

I think it is noteworthy of what topic Twitter stepped in on. Surely thousands of 45's tweets deserved fact checking "commentary"? And, many have been outside Twitter's normal TOS. They chose to speak to voting--and they inferred it was a global policy. In my opinion, Trump was laying the groundwork...

Re: Coronavirus racial distribution of cases

There are many variables to untangle. First, as noted, is access to healthcare and disparities there. Secondly, the percentage of those who are working in high-risk "essential" professions is disproportionately people of color. Third, cultural differences. For instance, Hispanics working in the meat...

Re: Racism in America Becoming Fashionable Again

Thanks for the thoughtful comment. It certainly is a mixed bag and there isn't a perfect means of resolving issues with this many passionate tendrils. Bringing such actions into the discussion is exactly what I recommended- I didn't say, "This is exactly how life should be and nothing happened that ...

Meh... No one died, no one got hurt. Oh wait, a woman's career was destroyed. I'm just instinctually against knee-jerk "torches and pitchforks--" social "justice". It very often gets it wrong. There are courts and legal systems. If he felt he was wronged and needed to be made whole, he could have us...

Fortunately, that's probably an erroneous comparison. I'll see what the comments are--from what I recall, SarsCov2 has error checking which slows the drift that exists with the cold. You're correct to note there are many components of cigarette smoke, but there is reason to single out nicotine. It has well documented effects on the cholinergic pathways. Whatever anyone's opinion is, I look forward to seeing the study results. The logic is sound and it would be irresponsible to n...

"we should all where masks..." Yabbut.... Compliance with that idea is already dismal. I was mulling around (while I worked on the garden) why this was? Would it be that not seeing facial expressions is part of it? Would a face shield (the simple, thin, clear plastic sheets that some wear) could be ...

I hadn't seen a couple of the models in that ensemble. The UT Austin model is interesting as it uses mobile phone GPS data to determine actual levels of social distancing independent of local or state guidance. Almost all of them seem to assume that current levels of social distancing will continue-...

What’s Up With Ivermectin? glutamate-gated chloride channels, which vertebrates don’t even have, although it can also bind to other ligand-gated chloride channels at higher concentrations. It’s really just an accident of pharmacology that it doesn’t cause more problems – it’s very toxic to a number...

The latest CDC projections are dismal. The daily death rate continues to climb.
This is well worth scanning. It's not easy to copy/paste from.

I can't speak to the non-Amarillo meat plants (except the situation might be similar), but most of the Amarillo workers are bussed in--an hour each way--and likely many live together. So, the context of the disease spread is likely more than just workplace interactions.

To me, that variable is interesting, but inconclusive. It is a good proxy measure for the effectiveness of Non-Pharmaceutical Interventions like social distancing, closures, hand washing etc., But the innate transmissibility without those NPI's will return to being a greater than 1 logarithmic numbe...
