Fresno Bee
Prosecutor Janz announces he’ll challenge Nunes for his seat in Congress

A violent-crimes prosecutor with the Fresno County District Attorney’s office is planning to challenge incumbent Rep. Devin Nunes in California’s 22nd Congressional District election in 2018.

Andrew Janz, 33, is launching his campaign Tuesday, touting his prosecutorial credentials and his nearly lifelong connections to the Valley – and criticizing Nunes for his close ties to President Donald Trump and concerns over Nunes’ actions related to an investigation of Russian interference in last year’s presidential election.

“I’m not a politician; I’ve never considered running for Congress until recently,” Janz told The Bee on Monday. “Most of the stuff in local and national media has pushed me to get involved,” he added, referring to a House Ethics Committee investigation into whether Nunes – chairman of the House Intelligence Committee – mishandled classified information related to the House Intelligence Committee’s Russia probe.

“I deal with confidential information on a daily basis,” Janz said. “I’m in a profession that’s all about ethics.”

Politico has an article about the sudden interest in Andrew Janz, who is challenging Nunes:
The controversy surrounding Nunes’ turn in the national spotlight has sparked a wave of interest in Janz’s long-shot campaign, powered by deep hostility toward Nunes’ role in the effort to delegitimize the federal probe into whether Russia infiltrated President Donald Trump’s campaign team.

Janz, a previously little-known Fresno prosecutor, reports he’s been deluged by donations and media attention. Last week, the congressman’s hometown paper, the Fresno Bee, headlined a scathing editorial under the headline, “Rep. Devin Nunes, Trump’s stooge, attacks FBI.”
:snippity:
“We’re looking really good, thanks to him,’’ Janz told POLITICO, just hours after the memo’s Friday release. “I think we took in $100,000 between today and yesterday.”

Nunes creates own media outlet to deliver ‘news, sports, and analysis’

Rep. Devin Nunes's (D-Calif.) campaign has created its own news site, which claims to put out "the best of US, California, and Central Valley news, sports, and analysis.”

The site, called "The California Republican," is paid for by Nunes's campaign committee, Politico reported.

The website features a variety of articles, including "Understanding the process behind #ReleaseTheMemo" and "CNN busted for peddling fake news AGAIN!"

According to Politico, the website was registered by a Fresno-area communications consultant, Alex Tavlian. The company has been paid $7,773 from Nunes's campaign since July for "advertising; digital advertising management." ...

The website says on its Facebook page it is a "Media/News company." It currently has about 3,600 likes on Facebook.

Dem: It's 'pretty funny' Nunes is paying for 'alternative news' site to attack me

Rep. Ted Lieu (D-Calif.) mocked Rep. Devin Nunes, saying the California Republican is paying for an "alternative news" site to attack him.

This is pretty funny. Rep @DevinNunes is now PAYING for a fake 'alternative news' site to...attack folks like me," Lieu tweeted.
Hey Devin, feel free to call me names because I'm cool like that," he added.
But at least I actually read underlying documents before writing memos based on those documents.

Nunes's campaign has created its own news site, which claims to put out "the best of US, California, and Central Valley news, sports, and analysis.” The site, called "The California Republican," is paid for by Nunes's campaign committee, Politico reported.

One of the blurbs on the site is headlined: “Dem CA Rep roasted on CNN, proceeds to make a fool of himself.”< snip>

Devin Nunes' media site down after reported 'attack' on server

An online media outlet funded by Rep. Devin Nunes’ (R-Calif.) campaign appeared to be down on Sunday afternoon after what the site called “heavy traffic and an attack on our servers.”

“The California Republican,” the name of the site, posted on its Facebook page that those trying to reach the site may encounter an error message.

As of late Sunday afternoon, the link to the site’s home page redirects back to the outlet’s Facebook page, and links to articles redirect to a broken Facebook link.

Politico reported earlier Sunday that the Nunes campaign has paid nearly $8,000 to a Fresno-area communications consultant since last July for the site. "The California Republican" is listed as a "Media/News" Company."
Anthony Ratekin, Nunes’ chief of staff, declined to comment to Politico about the site. <SNIP>

Bloomberg
Devin Nunes's Safe Seat Is Looking Less Safe

The congressman's pro-Trump zeal is helping Democrat Andrew Janz raise funds. ...

The local Democratic organization has “a long track record of not getting Democrats elected to office,” Heather Greven, Janz’s campaign manager, pointed out.

The bad news for Janz is that the incumbent Republican congressman in this district beat his 2016 opponent by 35 percentage points. The good news is that the congressman is Devin Nunes, who for millions of Democrats across the country has become the face of Republican capitulation to a corrupt presidency. A lot of Democrats would like to see Nunes ousted. ...

California’s 22nd district, despite a Hispanic plurality and a nonwhite majority, is nowhere near a top target for Democrats in Washington, however. Nunes, who grew up in an affluent farm family, was first elected in 2002 and has been easily re-elected since. He has loads of money: At the end of 2017 his campaign reported $3.8 million in cash on hand, enough to flood the district, which contains only one television market, Fresno, along with small towns and farmland. ...

Janz launched his campaign last April, and raised about a quarter million dollars in all of 2017. That’s not bad for a newbie. Since February 2, however, the date when Trump released a memo written by Nunes’s staff with the goal of undermining the Russia investigation, Janz has raised an additional $510,000, according to Greven. It’s still a long-shot campaign. But it looks slightly different than it did a few months ago. ...

He’s not the only Democrat running in the race. But he seems to be the one who figured out how to capitalize on fear of Trump and loathing of Nunes. If a national Democratic wave election does take shape, there will be odd congressional districts that unexpectedly flip to the Democrats in November. The 22nd district of California probably won’t be one. But it could be.

NBC News
Russia probe descends on Nunes’ re-election, threatens to upend midterms

WASHINGTON — Not long ago, Devin Nunes was an obscure Republican congressman accustomed to running for re-election essentially unopposed as he quietly ascended the ranks in Washington.

But his starring role in one of the defining sagas of the Donald Trump presidency has provoked a real threat back home. His work defending the White House from questions about Russian meddling in U.S. elections has made Nunes a vulnerable target in the midterms, even though Trump won his central California district by 10 percentage points.

A local prosecutor, Democrat Andrew Janz, is on track to raise $1 million this quarter after raking in more money online than any Democrat in the country, except for Conor Lamb, who won the recent special election in Pennsylvania.

"My opponent is front and center in all of this, and so we really believe that removing this man from office is a national imperative," Janz told NBC News. "This is the only way to get to the bottom of what happened in 2016 and to make sure that Russia's involvement in our elections never happens again."

Fresno Bee
Rep. Devin Nunes is no longer ‘safe’ in his race for re-election, forecaster says

The race for congressional District 22, held by longtime GOP incumbent Devin Nunes, has been downgraded from “safely Republican” to “likely Republican” by a closely watched political forecasting website run by the University of Virginia’s Center for Politics.

Sabato’s Crystal Ball, run by University of Virginia’s Center for Politics, cited the enormous amount of money raised by Democratic challenger Andrew Janz as one factor making the race more competitive. ...

District 22 is a historically Republican district, the Crystal Ball noted, although one where Donald Trump did worse in 2016 than Mitt Romney did in 2012. It runs from Tulare County north to Clovis and parts of Fresno.

The website predicts Democrats have a 50-50 chance to win enough seats to take control of the House.

SAN FRANCISCO — House Intelligence chair Rep. Devin Nunes of California has become a GOP hero and a Fox News regular in his role as the president’s congressional pit bull on the Russia investigation. But a new Democratic ad campaign aims to unseat him by suggesting that he’s advancing his own stardom in Washington while neglecting his real job of representing his constituents back home in California’s Central Valley.

“Enough with the Inspector Clouseau routine,’’ says former Democratic Rep. Ellen Tauscher, who co-founded Fight Back California, the independent expenditure campaign which Monday will launch the unveiling of “Three Billboards Against Devin Nunes outside Fresno, California” — a takeoff on the recent popular movie, “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.”

Instead of investing time and energy in what appears to be an effort to undermine the House Russia investigation, says Tauscher, who served as Under Secretary of State for arms control in the Obama Administration, “maybe he could explain to his constituents why he hasn’t had a town hall.’’

“Or how about he starts to pay attention to the China trade issue that is impacting his district?” she said.

In an interview with local paper, Rep. Devin Nunes, R-Tulare, was asked if he planned to host any local forums or town hall meetings. "Your paper is a joke to even bring these issues up or raise these issues," Nunes responded. http://www.fresnobee.com/news/local/art ... rylink=cpyhttp://www.fresnobee.com/news/local/art ... 59539.html

Tulare County farmer asking court to make Devin Nunes stop calling himself one, too

Several residents within California’s 22nd Congressional District filed a petition in Sacramento Superior Court on Thursday morning, asking the court to remove “farmer” from Rep. Devin Nunes’ description on California ballots.

The petition was filed on behalf of Paul Buxman, a Dinuba stone fruit farmer, as well as Daniel O’Connell and Hope Nisly, whose occupations are not listed. O’Connell is an active advocate for local farmers and is the executive director of the Central Valley Partnership.

“I don’t believe (Nunes) has had any income from farming for at least 10 years,” Buxman said. “He has some interest in a few wineries, but he’s distanced himself from those and says he has no involvement in their day-to-day management.”

Buxman, who said he once supported Nunes, said his congressman has forgotten about farmers and thus has no business identifying as one. Buxman listed three things that have gone wrong during Nunes’ congressional tenure: his well has gone dry and he’s lost orchards due to lack of water; his neighbors’ workers have been targeted in ICE audits; and the recent rush of tariffs has ruined the market for his crops.

The legal action was organized and paid for by Democratic super PAC Fight Back California, which also pays for the three billboards targeting Nunes on various issues along Highway 99.

SHUT THE FUCK UP, DEVIN NUNES, YOU'RE ON CANDID CAMERA!

As we said, Nunes was speaking at a fundraiser for the #4 ranked person in the House of Representatives, Cathy McMorris Rodgers, who is a horrible lying asshole and deserves to lose in November. We don't know why she thought adding Devin Nunes to her fundraiser would make it irresistibly sexxxy, but it's possible most of her GOP constituents in the outside-Spokane part of her district are romantically inclined cows.

(In case you haven't caught on yet, Wonkette's running joke about Devin Nunes is that he probably bones cows, ALLEGEDLY.)

The first revelation is that EVEN DEVIN NUNES hates it sometimes when Donald Trump makes a Twitter in his pants. EVEN DEVIN NUNES. And he's a Trump-sucking loser from the stupidest ring of hell, so that must mean the president of the United States is a real senile Twitter motherfucker if EVEN DEVIN NUNES doesn't always like his tweets.

More importantly, though, Nunes admits that (big hypothetical here) if a foreign government stole somebody's emails (can you imagine?) and if that foreign government shared them with somebody's campaign, that would be very bad and also a crime!

We love how he didn't use Russia as an example, considering how Russia stole emails from the DNC and the Hillary Clinton campaign and the Trump campaign sure seems to have conspired with the Russian cut-outs at WikiLeaks -- and maybe with the Kremlin itself! -- to release those emails in such a way that it would be extremely advantageous for them. DNC emails right before the Democratic National Convention? You bet! Hillary campaign chair John Podesta's emails LITERALLY MINUTES after the "Access Hollywood" tape came out, and also after the US government officially fingered Russia for active election interference? Why the fuck not!

Janz reports monster fundraising month, doubles next closest state congressional Democrat
Fresno Democrat Andrew Janz has raised nearly $1 million in the month of July – more than twice the fundraising haul of any Democratic incumbent or challenger in California.

Janz on Tuesday cited the latest filings from ActBlue, which is used to donate to Democratic campaigns online, in claiming the top fundraising spot. He also had the third-best June in the country, behind Beto O’Rourke, a Texas congressman running for U.S. Senate, and Ohio congressional challenger Danny O’Connor.
:snippity:
The month brings Janz’s fundraising total to about $3.8 million. As of June 30, his opponent, Tulare Republican Devin Nunes, had raised more than $7 million in this election cycle.

DEVIN NUNES’S FAMILY FARM IS HIDING A POLITICALLY EXPLOSIVE SECRET
Rep. Devin Nunes is head of the House Intelligence Committee and one of President Trump’s biggest defenders. For years, he’s spun himself as a straight talker whose no-BS values are rooted in his family’s California dairy farm. Late last week, Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) sent constituents in his Central Valley, California, district a curious bit of campaign literature. It wasn’t a typical half-page or full-page mailer, but a 38-page glossy mini-magazine entirely dedicated to lambasting the area’s largest newspaper, the Fresno Bee.

In bold red lettering at the top of several pages, the magazine promises to unveil the “dirty little secrets of the Valley’s propaganda machine.” The cover portrays cartoon bees on a yacht, drunk on Kool-Aid, crashing into a rocky shore. Posters reading “Resist,” “Antifascist,” and “Socialism” bob in the water below.
OK, this is weird. That must have cost a few pennies. Moar:

I highly recommend reading this piece. The headline seems pretty click-baity, but it's a fascinating story. I grew up very near to the Iowa town where Nunes' family moved their dairy farm, and lived there until I graduated college. My parents still live there, so I apparently drive by the Nunes farm every couple months or so when I visit them. Which is to say that I know this area quite well, and the depictions in this article of the people in the area ring true to me. It's a very conservative and very religious area, but people are complex and contradictory. And this article captures it very well.

Republicans face big risks in contested California races as Democrats fight for control of the House

Rep. Devin Nunes of Tulare, the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, has a 53%-45% lead in his race against Andrew Janz, a county prosecutor. Nunes’ role as a defender of Trump has opened a gusher of money for Janz, despite the district’s heavily Republican tilt.
