In this photo of Obama, it looks like the same gadget sitting on the credenza behind him, next to the box of Kleenex.

I assumed he'd stacked them up to make a nice pillow for a quick nap at the dedk when the opportunity presents itself, such as during a high level security briefing.

I've seen several photos showing the triangular device as seen in this screen shot just out on the desk from Trump's left hand. His iPhone is just off from his right hand side. What the hell is that little device I wonder? Anyone know what that is?

That's a Crestron touch screen remote from, I believe, about 10 years ago.

I thought the same thing. That, and the best they could do to make him look busy is newspapers? I see Obama is actually writing in a ledger. Of course, it could just be a shopping list, but still.

There is an interesting story about how he had employees purchase every publication and comb through it with a highlighter to find every instance of Trump's name. This was a daily ritual. After highlighting every instance of his name, they would deliver the stack to him so he could get his fleeting and temporary soothing of the ego every morning. They say he never actually read any of the stories, just wafted in the glory of seeing his name in print.

Opinion piece
The White House’s latest Mueller absurdity is shocking. Even for Trump.

By Greg Sargent

It is a useful exercise at times to step back and state clearly what President Trump and the White House are really arguing. We waste so much time chasing little lies that we lose sight of how audaciously, monumentally absurd and profoundly saturated in bad faith their big arguments really are.

Case in point: the current oversight wars, which just escalated once again.

Trump plans to release thousands of migrants in two Democratic strongholds, Florida officials say

By Isaac Stanley-Becker May 17 at 5:48 AM

Florida officials are raising alarm and pressing for details about the purported intention of the Trump administration to send hundreds of immigrants a week to two heavily Democratic counties in South Florida.

Customs and Border Protection has not publicly disclosed its plans. But a partial picture of a new approach to managing a record influx of immigrants at the southern border came into view on Thursday based on the accounts of local leaders in Broward and Palm Beach counties.

Even allies of the president were nonplussed. The state’s Republican governor, Ron DeSantis, joined federal lawmakers from Florida — Republicans and Democrats alike — in questioning the apparent effort to foist the immigration and asylum burden on two local jurisdictions without equipping them with the resources to house, feed, educate and protect new arrivals.

"We want a better plan from our federal government,” Palm Beach County Mayor Mack Bernard, a Haitian-born Democrat, said at a news conference. “We are not a border state.”

As arrests at the border continue to increase — threatening to derail the immigration agenda that has formed the cornerstone of President Trump’s domestic policy — South Florida officials said they have been told to expect the arrival twice a week of 135 asylum seekers, rerouted from the El Paso area. That is equivalent to about 1,000 people per month, divided between the two counties.

Law enforcement briefed on the plans said the arrivals were set to begin within the next two weeks and that no end date had been set. They said they still hoped federal authorities would reverse course.

You just know that these people are still going to have to attend their immigration hearings, which knowing Trump are still going to be in Texas, and when they don't show up he gets to show the stats of how they just disappear, and then round them up and deport them after they lose the case for not showing up.

If anyone knows if they're going to have their cases moved to Florida I'd like to know.

Do we need a thread for trump's pardons? Sounds like more questionable pardons are lining up for Memorial Day, this time soldiers convicted of war crimes. And these guys sound pretty bad.

Also too, I can't help wonder what message this sends to blood-thirsty militia members, not to mention any corrupt Border Patrol agents. I could see them using this to justify mowing down immigrants just because they're immigrants.

Somebody needs to remind the military service members that they cannot rely on following presidents to pardon them and they better follow the rules strictly.

President Donald Trump’s obsession with staying at his own resorts isn’t just costing American taxpayers anymore, it’s straining diplomatic relations. CNN reports that the White House is pushing for a June meeting with Ireland’s head of state take place at the president’s golf course in Doonbeg. The Irish government isn’t pleased:

White House Launches Survey Looking for Tech Industry Anti-Conservative Bias

BY BARBARA ORTUTAY / AP MAY 16, 2019
SAN FRANCISCO — On the heels of President Donald Trump’s repeated assertions claiming anti-conservative bias by tech companies, the White House has launched an online form asking people to share their experiences if they think political partisanship has led them to be silenced by social media sites.

The White House’s official Twitter account tweeted a link to the form Wednesday, saying that “The Trump Administration is fighting for free speech online.” The tweet continues that “no matter your views, if you suspect political bias has caused you to be censored or silenced online, we want to hear about it!”

I didn't (can't) watch it, but, from what I see on twitter, it sounds like his usual temper tantrum and media shaming with the added bonus of informing Pelosi he won't work with her until the democrats stop all their investigations into his corruption (paraphrasing). She really pissed him off this morning when she accused him of a coverup.

Oh, also too, somebody got sent to Kinko's to print out a big poster announcing NO COLLUSION, NO OBSTRUCTION, which was attached to the front of the lectern. Real classy.

(edited to add) Threatening to shut down infrastructure talks because of the investigations sounds like a backfire waiting to happen. Naturally Speaker Pelosi will continue working on the bill and, when passed, McConnell will refuse to take it up on trump's orders. Who's going to take the heat for that?
