The Russian press is calling the Singapore summit a "PR success" & "victory" for Kim Jong-un. One paper warns that Trump's "exaggerated self-belief in his powers of negotiation" puts the US president "at risk of manipulation by his negotiating partners."

Well, the Russians would know all about that. ;)

:yeah: Pretty much the only people that don't have Trump completely figured out are Trump and his voters. Everyone else knows exactly how to manipulate and get the best of Trump. How he ever managed to convince anyone of his negotiating prowess is beyond me. I guess repetition really does work among people who have no incentive to check facts.

Eh, the democrats do not seem to have figured it out, or I guess they could have just decided the utility for tweaking him was greater, but I do not have much faith in the democratic leadership being that saavy.

It's not surprising that Trump and Kim Jong-un get along so well: they're the same person. Venal. Petty. Selfish. Born into privilege, educated at high-end schools, never acquired a skill other than bullying, never solved a problem by anything other than eliminating everyone in their way.

So I don't think either of them took advantage of the other. They met, reached a vague and meaningless agreement, then went home and told everybody what they wanted them to believe. This probably works fine for both of them, especially Trump, who won't be pressed too hard about any lack of compliance on his adversary's part. But since Kim announced the lessening of sanctions - which I still think is a damning admission - the North Korean people might expect that to materialize.

But people float small balloons with memory sticks, cell phones and similar items (possibly including small radios?) over the border for the North Koreans. The memory sticks contain a mix of stuff, including popular entertainment and news items, I think.

Foreign cell coverage is available near the border, and obviously some North Koreans have family and friends in South Korea. So there might be more samizdat style knowledge of the outside world than is immediately obvious.
You are correct. There's a long history of this sort of thing:

http://freekorea.us/2011/02/25/open-sou ... NL3HU.dpbs
The most common conduit is North Korean traders who frequently travel to China. They store the pictures and videos on USB memory sticks and bring them out with them. “In February last year we developed ‘stealth’ USBs and distributed hundreds of them in the North,” said Kim Heung-kwang of defector group North Korea Intellectuals Solidarity.

Kim said when customs officials check the USBs on their computers, they look empty with “0 byte” appearing on the monitors. But after a certain period of time the content is automatically restored. “The stealth USBs appear to contain nothing when they are sent to North Korea and can easily pass through screening,” Kim said. “But South Korean dramas, news or other content are restored later.”

Although most North Koreans have no Internet access, they get information about the outside world through USBs, CDs or DVDs.
So not only do North Koreans have the means to view material transferred via USB, they have developed sophisticated methods for getting it past the border guards. By the way, that story is from 2011.

She talks about the underground culture in NK, mostly with the younger generation:

It was an achievement for Trump to meet with a leader who has wanted nothing more than to be legitimized by being seen having a meeting with the "leader" of the free world? These people have no capacity for critical thinking whatsoever. A meeting is an achievement. The bar is so low at this point all the next Democratic president will have to do is have a pulse.

Mike Pompeo loses temper when asked about North Korean disarmament
Thu 14 Jun 2018 https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/201 ... ill-happen

On returning to the US from his historic meeting with Kim, the first ever between US and North Korean leaders, Trump declared in a tweet: “There is no longer a nuclear threat from North Korea.”

The president blamed the media for scepticism over what had been achieved in Singapore. “They are fighting hard to downplay the deal with North Korea. 500 days ago they would have “begged” for this deal – looked like war would break out,” Trump said. “Our country’s biggest enemy is the fake news so easily promulgated by fools!”
:snippity:
Before the Singapore summit, the Trump administration, and Pompeo in particular, insisted the US would demand more rigorous terms, specifically “complete, verifiable, irreversible disarmament” (CVID), which is favoured by arms control experts to reduce wiggle-room in negotiations.
But when he was asked why the words “verifiable” and “irreversible” were not in the joint statement, he argued the two terms were encompassed in the single word “complete”: “You could argue semantics, but let me assure you that it’s in the document,” Pompeo said.

When asked again how disarmament would be verified, Pompeo replied: “There’s a long way to go, there’s much to think about, but don’t say silly things.

“No, don’t, don’t,” he continued in face of the questioning. “It’s not productive. It’s not productive to do that, to say silly things. It’s just – it’s unhelpful.

“It’s unhelpful for your readers, your listeners, for the world,” Pompeo said. “It doesn’t remotely reflect the American position or the understandings that the North Koreans have either.”

Wrong my friend, the bar is only that law for Republicans. For Democrats, and especially Democratic women, they have to be superheroes.

Was he wrong to salute or even return the salute of a foreign officer that we are still at war with...

Was he wrong to return the salute for the reasons the protocol officer(s) briefed him not to... :mememe:

Was he wrong to salute indoors... :coffeescreen: (Caveat - some salutes by US military services are done indoors. #45 WAS NOT reporting to N. Korean officer, nor was he being paid by this officer, hell - trumpy ain't even in the military!)

Was he EVEN wrong knowing that THE ONLY TIME he should return a salute is when he is getting on or off Marine One or Air Force One...#CadetBoneSpurs was just plain a$$ wrong... :madguy:

Even with all of that, #45 should have known that this N Korean officer HAD TO SWEAR AN OATH to defeat the United States for the greater part of all his military life, and have done some terrible things toward the US to just be where he was in Singapore!

Trump, your phooobahh did not make america great (again). It slide us ever past the slippery slope of international laughing stock!!!

Not the birthday gift Trump wanted today

North Korean state media just debuted new behind the scene footage of the Trump-Kim Summit, showing Trump saluting a North Korean General

15:18 - 14 Jun 2018
How stupid was that :brickwallsmall: The general was giving his hand for a greeting. It would have been for the general to salute first if ever. This was not the WH Marine guards to reply with a salute while they stand to attention next to the helicopter. Bone spurs must still be missing the boot camp for his skipped Vietnam engagement.

optimusprime - Trump is, sadly, "in the military." He's Commander in Chief.

When I was a draft lawyer I marvelled at the selective service regulations. POTUS was exempt because he was CinC. VPOTUS was not exempt from being drafted (unless he was too old, which they all were).

The NK general did salute first. Trump gave him a blank stare and the general put his hand out for a handshake. Then Trump did the salute.

Sterngard, we can split hairs just about post for post...let me clarify: Military = those who are subject to the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ). The CinC is not, for there is no convening authority for charging the CinC with "conduct unbecoming" or UCMJ Article 92: "Failure to Obey Order or Regulation" Also, the CinC does not have a pay scale payable through DFAS.
