Chinatown merchants blame fears over coronavirus for drastic decline in business
HONOLULU, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) - Businesses in Honolulu’s Chinatown are reporting a drastic drop in sales ― as Chinatowns across the U.S. have turned into virtual ghost towns because of irrational fears of infection.

Shop owners say growing concerns over COVID-19, also known as the coronavirus, are keeping customers away ― and it’s been like that several weeks.
I hate this hysterical panic. People at their worst.

Mainland China-

:snippity:
I've been out at sea, fortunately on a ship that did not have anyone who had the corona virus (although I did have more than my fair share of Coronas). So I haven't been keeping up with this thread. What does "cure" mean in this context? Is there actually a "cure" for this (or any) virus?
In this context "cure" means the patient recovered and tests as being free of the virus. Just like getting over a cold or the flu. These days there are drugs that are effective against some viruses. Examples are Tami-flu, Zanamivir and interferon.

Coronavirus patient evacuated from China quarantined in San Antonio

https://abc13.com/health/coronavirus-pa ... o/5927743/
A patient with coronavirus is quarantined in San Antonio, making this the 15th case of the disease in the United States.

The person is in federal quarantine at the Air Force Base, Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the patient returned to the United States on a State Department-chartered flight that arrived on Feb.7.

This is the first person under quarantine at JBSA-Lackland to test positive for coronavirus.

2. Per the quarantined evacuee, this area is known at The Inn. It’s the designated medical area for quarantined evacuees. Previously crews had been wearing only face masks, gloves, and eye protection. Again, still waiting for info from CDC. #nbc7

JCB to cut UK production as coronavirus hits supply chain

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/business/20 ... shortages/
JCB is cutting production due to anticipated component shortages from Chinese suppliers affected by the coronavirus outbreak.

Overtime is being suspended and about 4,000 workers will start a shorter working week from Monday.

The measures will see the introduction of a 34-hour week for UK factory employees until further notice, although JCB employees will be paid for a 39-hour week and will bank the hours, working them back later in the year.

Chief operating officer Mark Turner said: "The disruption to the component supply chain in the UK comes at a time when demand for JCB products is very strong, so while this course of action is very unfortunate, it is absolutely necessary to protect the business and our skill base.

Live updates: Coronavirus cases surge again in China; more than 1,700 medical workers infected

Shibani Mahtani, Miriam Berger and Adam Taylor
Feb. 14, 2020 at 9:12 p.m. GMT+1

China again reported a big jump in coronavirus cases Friday after changing its methodology for diagnosing and counting infections, denting hopes that the deadly outbreak could be petering out.

With an additional 5,000 reported Friday, the number of cases in mainland China has now surged past 63,000, and the economic fallout is mounting. The latest casualties are flower sellers in the country, some of whom have seen their sales fall up to 95 percent on Valentine’s Day.

More places in Hubei province, the epicenter of the outbreak, are enacting “wartime” measures, such as sealing off residential complexes and allowing only essential vehicles on the roads. Authorities in Yunmeng county, where the new steps kicked in Friday morning, said that anyone attempting to breach the lockdown “at compounds, buildings or road connections” would be detained.

Africa has its first confirmed case of coronavirus.

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/02/14/worl ... virus.html
The first coronavirus case on the African continent was reported in Egypt on Saturday when the Egyptian health ministry reported that an infected person had been placed in isolation in a hospital.

In a statement, the ministry said the patient was a foreigner but did not specify a nationality. The World Health Organization in Egypt said on Twitter that the person was carrying the virus but had not shown any symptoms.

Several African countries have stepped up screening at airports and other ports of entry in recent weeks over fears that nations with weak health care systems, especially those already battling diseases like malaria and ebola, are particularly vulnerable.

Sixteen countries have the capacity to test for the coronavirus and another 20 will come online by Feb. 20, Dr. John Nkengasong, director of Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, told reporters in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, on Friday.

Coronavirus: UK conference attendees warned over case

https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-51503292
The person, who has not been identified, was at the UK Bus Summit at the QEII Conference Centre last week.

Two Labour MPs who were also at the conference said they were well but cancelling public engagements until 20 February as a precaution.

:snippity:

MP Lilian Greenwood - a former chair of the transport select committee - spoke at the 6 February conference in Westminster, which was attended by about 250 people from the bus and transport industry.

:snippity:

Her colleague Alex Sobel, MP for Leeds North West, told BBC News he only found out through a journalist about the positive test and was "concerned" other attendees may still be unaware.

Why the coronavirus outbreak might be much bigger than we know

https://www.vox.com/2020/2/14/21134473/ ... s-pandemic
In a remarkably calm and candid tone, Singapore’s prime minister acknowledged something difficult: The new coronavirus disease, Covid-19, was likely spreading in his country, even among people who have never been to China.

“In the last few days,” Lee Hsien Loong said on February 8 in a Facebook video, “we’ve seen some cases which cannot be traced to the source of infection. These worried us because it showed that the virus is probably already circulating in our own population.” If the virus is even more widespread, he added, “it’s futile to try to trace every contact.” Instead of trying to contain the disease, health officials in Singapore will have to accept that it’s gone everywhere and shift to mitigating its impact.

With Singapore’s proximity and close ties to China, it is uniquely exposed to Covid-19. (To date, it has recorded 67 cases of the new coronavirus disease — one of the highest tallies outside mainland China — and no deaths.)

But global health experts increasingly warn that more countries may already have — or will likely see — what Singapore has: broader spread of this new disease within their borders, or “community transmission,” in public health speak.

Whoa. Just got an email from my contact at IBM saying it’s canceling participation at #RSAC this year because of the coronavirus (COVID-19). The decision was made out of an “abundance of caution.”
Computer security conference. Last year 42,000 people attended from around the world. A Full Conference Pass costs $1,795–$2,895, depending on when you purchase it.

RSA Conference 2020 USA will take place February 24 – 28, 2020.

RSA Conference is held in San Francisco, CA, at the Moscone Center.

Maybank Championship postponed due to Covid-19

http://pargolf.my/2020/02/15/maybank-ch ... -covid-19/
This year’s Maybank Championship, slated to take place at Saujana Golf & Country Club on April 16-19, has been postponed due to the Covid-19 outbreak.

The postponement of the event was announced by the two sanctioning tours, the Asian Tour and European Tour, yesterday. The following week’s Volvo China Open has also been postponed.

:snippity:

A statement on the websites of both tours noted: “The Asian Tour and European Tour accepted a request from title sponsor and promoter Maybank to postpone the Maybank Championship. Discussions are ongoing with all parties looking into the possibility of rescheduling the tournament later this season.”

Datuk Abdul Farid Alias, Group President & CEO of Maybank, said: “The decision to postpone the Maybank Championship was made after intense deliberation and careful consideration in the interest of all the players, visitors, working teams and partners.

Barcelona -

https://www.theverge.com/2020/2/12/2112 ... -statement

The world’s biggest phone show has been canceled due to coronavirus concerns

The world’s biggest phone show, Mobile World Congress, is no longer taking place this year. After coronavirus threatened to throw MWC into chaos, the GSM Association (GSMA), which organizes the show, has now canceled it. It comes after more than a week of exhibitors and companies pulling out of MWC.

In a statement, GSMA CEO John Hoffman said the coronavirus outbreak has made it “impossible” to hold the event. MWC was scheduled to take place in Barcelona between February 24th and the 27th.

“With due regard to the safe and healthy environment in Barcelona and the host country today, the GSMA has cancelled MWC Barcelona 2020 because the global concern regarding the coronavirus outbreak, travel concern and other circumstances, make it impossible for the GSMA to hold the event. The Host City Parties respect and understand this decision. The GSMA and the Host City Parties will continue to be working in unison and supporting each other for MWC Barcelona 2021 and future editions. Our sympathies at this time are with those affected in China, and all around the world.”

US to evacuate Americans on cruise ship quarantined in Japan from coronavirus outbreak

https://www.cnn.com/2020/02/15/politics ... index.html
The US embassy in Tokyo on Saturday sent an email to Americans on board the Diamond Princess cruise ship detailing plans for a voluntary evacuation for US citizens and their immediate family from the ship to take place Sunday evening local time.

:snippity:

Over 3,600 people, including 428 Americans, have been stuck on the cruise ship docked in Yokohama since February 4 in what has become the largest outbreak of the virus outside of mainland China. At least 24 Americans are among the 219 people infected with coronavirus aboard the Diamond Princess cruise.

The email from the US embassy, obtained by CNN from a passenger onboard the ship, says that the US government "recommends, out of an abundance of caution, that US citizens disembark and return to the United States for further monitoring."

Those who choose to return to the United States on the charter aircraft will be required to undergo another 14 days of quarantine. "We understand this is frustrating and an adjustment, but these measures are consistent with the careful policies we have instituted to limit the potential spread of the disease," the email reads.

I think I read that some of the Americans are thinking of staying on the ship as they would not be quarantined for as long if they stay on the ship. Quarantine would start all over if they return to US. I'd probably be ready to leave if I were on that ship.

The ships make interesting news, but there are usually about 250-300 cruise ships at one time around the planet, so they are not really any worse than any other place in tight quarters. Very few are making the news.

Because of my husband's recent heart surgery, we had to cancel a cruise next week from Buenos Aires to Santiago. This virus would in no way have stopped us from going.

Except that on this ship the passengers are told to remain in their cabins. Some cabins will barely exeed the size of a prison cell.

I know that. I'd go crazy if I were in an inside cabin, but I wouldn't be in one. On our last cruise, we went by some inside cabins that were being cleaned as we were leaving. I'd go crazy inside one of those even if not quarantined. I have sympathy for the people in an inside cabin who were stuck in them for weeks at a time. Nothing about being quarantined has any appeal any place.

Another cancellation.

Facebook cancels global marketing summit because of COVID-19 concerns

https://www.marketwatch.com/story/faceb ... sSecondary
Facebook Inc. FB, +0.49% is the latest tech company to pull the plug on an event because of COVID-19. "Our priority is the health and safety of our teams, so out of an abundance of caution, we cancelled our Global Marketing Summit due to evolving public health risks related to coronavirus," a Facebook spokesman said in an email to MarketWatch late Friday. The marketing summit was to take place this week in San Francisco. Previously, Facebook dropped out of Mobile World Congress, one of the largest and best-known telecommunications conferences in the world, for the same reason, leading to the show's cancellation. Among other companies to drop out of MWC out of health concerns were AT&T Inc. T, -0.16%, Intel Corp. INTC, -0.25%, Sony Corp. SNE, -1.11%, and Amazon.com Inc. [s:AMZN]. Late Friday, International Business Machines Corp. IBM, -2.34% said it was skipping the RSA security conference in San Francisco later this month because of COVID-19.
