Raconteur and Governor Paul LePage was the toast of the town at yesterday's Republican State Convention.
Maine’s Republican governor says it’s hard to understand workers “from Bulgaria” and workers from India are “the worst ones.”

The governor said Saturday that foreign workers are being used in restaurants after he criticized a referendum proposal to raise Maine’s minimum wage to $12. He says he’s disappointed his alternative proposal to hike the wage to $10 didn’t get traction. He described Indians as “lovely people but you’ve got to have an interpreter.”

LePage is known for making controversial remarks. In this case, he was chuckling as he spoke at the state party convention. He joked that his wife is going to get a job as a waitress for supplemental income.

He also had a crude remark about President Barack Obama, saying Obama stands for “one big-ass mistake, America.”

Governor LePage adopted a shelter dog. Even that is controversial, because he's a jerk.

Did Maine Gov. Paul LePage Steal A Lady’s Dog? We Are Just Asking Questions!
http://wonkette.com/601582/did-maine-go ... a2GWzqK.99
Looks like Maine Governor Paul LePage decided to take a day off from hoping heroin addicts die of overdoses and setting up camp deep inside Donald Trump’s butt, to do a thing much less terrible than usual — adopt a shelter dog!

Except that, because he is Paul LePage, he even adopted a shelter dog in a jerky way, by breaking the very rules of the shelter itself and basically stealing a lady’s dog, kind of. TO THE TORCHES!

The Greater Androscoggin Human Society gave LePage a Jack Russell terrier mix that was not supposed to be available for adoption until the next day. “The governor walks in your front door and it sort of shifts things a little,” said Donna Kincer, the shelter’s development director/rule breaker.

The shelter is pretty ok with the situation, believing it will bring them good publicity.

Alas, this broke the heart of one Heath Arsenault, a woman who played by the rules and had intended to wait in line to adopt the dog the next day when he became officially became available for adoption — and had even taken off work in order to be the first there. She had intended to adopt the dog to help her cope emotionally after a recent sexual assault, and “was attached to the hope that things could start getting better” once he was in her life.

HBO's 'Last Week Tonight' features LePage in satirical segment
Published on May 15, 2016
"This week's person who somehow got elected, Paul LePage, Governor of Maine," the segment started. "The state that has been overseeing a non-stop lobster genocide since 1820. Since coming to power five years ago, brash Tea Party backed conservative has been busy, mostly fighting with his state's legislature, to which he's issued a record number of vetoes more than 400 and counting."

The 4-minute-long segment featured several clips, including several from WMTW News 8.

LePage won the 2010 gubernatorial election with nearly 40 percent of the vote. He was reelected in 2014 with nearly 50 percent of the vote.

According to new reports Gov LePage's wife has HAD to take a job as a waitress at McSeagull's to make ends meet.

In the meantime, LePage is trying hard to rid Maine of food stamps (i.e., the SNAP Program). His latest bitch? Food stamps can be used to buy sugary drinks like Coke.

Never a real believer in scientific nutrition, LePage simply hates, HATES poor folks who receive any form of public assistance. I honestly think he is the least compassionate person I have ever watched in public office.

Just a generally nasty piece of work all 'round. I think there is a lot of dog in the manger there for some reason.

Yet he draws a salary from the government, and pretty much doesn't do anything for it.

Watching from not very far away, he really hasn't done anything to help Mainers.. who have a lot of things they really need help on..

sigh..

Well, actually, he wastes a lot of time, causes Maine a great deal of expense and incredible embarrassment with his ill considered, ill advised, and more often than not illegal actions as far as state government is concerned. he wasted buckets of money on appeals of vetos he screwed up and lost in court to the legislature among other things. So I suspect that all things considered, he has been a considerable expense to the state of Maine well above and beyond his salary.

LePage Leaves Unhinged Voicemail For 'C**ksucker' Rep.: 'Prove I'm Racist!'

http://talkingpointsmemo.com/livewire/p ... ign=buffer
“Mr. Gattine, this is Gov. Paul Richard LePage,” a recording of the message begins. “I would like to talk to you about your comments about my being a racist, you cocksucker.”

“I want to talk to you. I want you to prove that I’m a racist. I’ve spent my life helping black people and you little son-of-a-bitch, socialist cocksucker,” the governor continued. “You … I need you to, just friggin. I want you to record this and make it public because I am after you. Thank you.”

The governor left the expletive-laden message on Thursday morning, after a reporter asked him to respond to critics who have called him racist. LePage asked the reporter who'd called him racist, and while the journalist mentioned he had talked with Gattine, he didn’t say that Gattine specifically called LePage racist, The Portland Press Herald reported.

The governor later called the same news crew to his home to continuing slamming Gattine as “a snot-nosed little guy” that he would love to challenge to an old-fashioned duel.

It's a fascinating question, isn't it?

His first term election was easy to explain: A fairly popular "moderate" ran as an independent which split the sane vote and allowed LePage to win with thirty-something percent. AFAIC, his re-election to a second term is a more troubling. Once again, there was a three-way race and I'd throw in that his Democratic opponent (former Congressman Mike Michaud) ran a lackluster campaign. Still, these factors don't fully explain how LePage increased his share of the vote to over 50%.

In hindsight, I think this should have been seen as a warning sign to take Trump's fascist candidacy seriously. Unfortunately, I'm afraid there really are enough angry, uneducated white guys these days to provide a ready-made alt-right base for whoever's spewing hate and fear the loudest.

In an editorial today the Portland Press Herald attempted an apology to America:
Dear America: Maine here. Please forgive us – we made a terrible mistake. We managed to elect and re-elect a governor who is unfit for high office.

He has a gruff exterior and blunt way of talking that some of us find refreshing, but he has shown again and again that he governs by grudge, and uses his power to beat up on people who cannot fight back.

You probably heard about the latest episode. He was asked about the toxic racial environment that he created in the state with insensitive statements about people of color. The questioner, an entrepreneur from New York, wondered how he could ever bring a business here. The question was an opportunity for the governor to undo some of the damage that he has caused by giving members of minority groups around the country the impression that Maine is a white state where no one else is welcome.

:snippity:

Instead, the governor repeated one of his worst libels: That Maine’s drug crisis is the fault of black and brown transient thugs who come here not only to sell their poison but also to take advantage of “white Maine women.” It’s a matter of fact that heroin comes to Maine from other states – they don’t produce it here – but the governor is adamant about identifying the drug runners by race, leaving it to his audience to fill in the blanks of why that might matter.

LePage says he is considering resignation, apologizes
“I’m looking at all options,” the Republican governor said while appearing on WVOM, a Bangor talk radio station. “I think some things I’ve been asked to do are beyond my ability. I’m not going to say that I’m not going to finish it. I’m not saying that I am going to finish it.”

He later said, “If I’ve lost my ability to help Maine people, maybe it’s time to move on.”

I bet he comes out in the next 48 hours and tells us that he's heard from thousands of his constituents, telling him to stay on.

No chance he resigns. This is just one of a litany of ridiculously horrid moments from Gov. LePage. He'll say he was begged to stay.
