I agree. I don’t mean to be insensitive, but the plural/singular thing really bothers me. IOW do you say “they is” when talking about one person?

I don't understand pronouns either, but I don't understand why people buy Chrysler products, why they eat sushi, why they play pickle ball, or why they think Portlandia is funny. Hey - a rose growing in the wrong place is a weed no matter what Shakespeare thinks.

ETA: I admit that I struggle with this one. I don't mind at all that there are people that consider themselves non binary and want to be identified as such. It's just that I'm old enough that this just sounds grammatically incorrect to my brain and causes me to pause. I'm also likely to use "he" or "she" depending on how a person looks, until I'm corrected. I'm not at all resistant to the idea but my brain is having some trouble adapting.
It wasn't a big transition for me because I already used they over he/she extensively to avoid misgendering people. Which I did. Misgender someone. Once. :oopsy:

Subject to correction by those more knowledgeable, my impression is that the rule in European languages is generally that the verb form matches the pronoun rather than the semantic subject. So "they are".
Off Topic
The pronouns thing intrigues me because its proponents are arguing how first person A talking to second person B should third reference person C - it's about 3rd person pronouns. But by definition the subject individual is not in those conversations!

If it were about 2nd person pronouns and agreement of gendered adjectives, it would be more immediate and pressing: "hey, don't talk to me like that!" But English around the world generally uses "you" regardless of the status of the second person, unless it's a formal high status occasion, "Your Highness", "Your Honor", etc., which is very marked.

But English doesn't have tu/vous (Fr), du/Sie (Ge), du/de (Dk,No), tu/usted (Es). Scandinavian languages rarely use the formal form (? pedantically I guess all forms are tautologically formal, but y'all know what I mean!) and it sounds weird to hear. Former Queen Margrethe II of Denmark worked as a designer away from her royal role and when asked how she should be addressed replied along the lines of "please just use 'du' when you talk to me, but use 'De' when you talk to the queen"!

I don't say "they is," I say "they are" for a singular person. FWIW.

"Pat is my friend. They are a pretty cool person."

Is what I would say if I didn't know for sure a) the gender of Pat, b) the preferred pronouns for Pat.

In church, somebody is more important than him and stronger than him. He can't be having that.
