Ah. I had not paid any attention to this, so when the announcement was made of its failure I thought maybe it was more than this. thanks!bob wrote: ↑Mon Nov 20, 2023 4:14 pmBasically, yes. Most likely done so the issues later can be raised in a federal habeas corpus petition.
Literally any loser can file in SCOTUS. This was just a routine denial of one of the approximately 10,000 cert. petitions SCOTUS receives annually.Surprised it got that far.

Chauvin OD’d on Fentanyl. Stabbing is an approved correctional officer technique. Steven Crowder let someone stab him and it had no effect.poplove wrote: ↑Fri Nov 24, 2023 9:29 pm Ex-officer Derek Chauvin, convicted in George Floyd’s killing, stabbed in prison, AP source says

I have nothing for Chauvin but prisoners should be safe.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Minnesota’s attorney general on Saturday denounced a prison attack on Derek Chauvin, saying the former Minneapolis police officer convicted of murdering George Floyd should be able to serve his sentence without fear of violence.

You think there should be a selection panel and rigorous interviews to ensure that only well-behaved convicts are permitted to reside in prisons? No riff-raff!pipistrelle wrote: ↑Sat Nov 25, 2023 8:39 pm

I agree that violence in prison is a serious issue. My response, though, was actually reacting more to what the AG said in the article. His phrasing just rubbed me the wrong way.pipistrelle wrote: ↑Sat Nov 25, 2023 8:39 pmNot arguing that, but violence in prison is a disgrace.Kriselda Gray wrote: ↑Sat Nov 25, 2023 7:08 pmGeorge Floyd should have been able to go out without fear of violence, too.pipistrelle wrote: ↑Sat Nov 25, 2023 3:15 pm I have nothing for Chauvin but prisoners should be safe.

Agreed. Equally disgraceful are the sly, nudge nudge, wink wink comments approving of sexual assault that one sees. Even, to our shame, on here on rare occasions.pipistrelle wrote: ↑Sat Nov 25, 2023 8:39 pmNot arguing that, but violence in prison is a disgrace.Kriselda Gray wrote: ↑Sat Nov 25, 2023 7:08 pmGeorge Floyd should have been able to go out without fear of violence, too.pipistrelle wrote: ↑Sat Nov 25, 2023 3:15 pm I have nothing for Chauvin but prisoners should be safe.

People do tend to forget that prisoners are wards of the state in the same way orphans at state-run orphanages are, and yet we let one set of wards of the state be abused in ways we would not countenance for the other. There's a tendency to forget that the 'social contract' by which we take people prisoner and lock them away for punishment and (one hopes) rehabilitation includes the bargain that the state *will* do its level best to keep them alive, healthy, and safe during the time in which we take away their freedom. It's the same attitude (though in a darker vein) that says that teachers (for example) sign up for shitty conditions when they sign up for their jobs, forgetting that the social contract works both ways.

And the truth shall ever come uppermost,
And justice shall be done.

If he survives, they will probably have to move him to a supermax facility where they don't ever come out of the cell more than 1 at a time.

Ben: of course there's that duty of care but prisons are packed with bad people so bad events are almost inevitable absent an inhumane regime of segregation and lockdown.
I think Fogfolk understand and respect that duty of care … but that doesn't block that tingle of schadenfreude when an evildoer is fed his karmic desserts.
We are decent but we aren't angels. Chauvin deserves and gets no sympathy, murdering asshole that he is. Even though it shouldn't happen.

See, I read this as clear sarcasm -- DIF is saying "if they can make up all this crap to excuse Floyd's death, I'll go over the top on excusing Chauvin's stabbing."
