Sen. Sherrod Brown received an extra property tax credit and racked up penalties for late payments
Responding to questions from NBC News, Brown's campaign said he repaid an Ohio county for tax breaks he wasn't entitled to and paid a late fee on another property he owns.

CLEVELAND — Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, for years claimed an owner-occupancy tax credit at two properties, public records show — a potential violation of the state’s rules governing such incentives.

Brown and his wife, journalist Connie Schultz, also were late paying the tax bill on their Cleveland house at least seven times since purchasing it in 2013, missing a payment deadline as recently as February, according to documents kept by the Cuyahoga County treasurer. At one point in 2015, the county labeled them as delinquent after they failed for months to pay a nearly $1,200 bill.

Responding to questions from NBC News, Brown and Schultz this week paid a $390 penalty stemming from their most recent late payment. Brown also repaid Franklin County, where he owns a condo in Columbus, for occupancy credits he should not have received, his campaign manager, Rachel Petri, said Wednesday. She did not say what caused the errors.

“They made a mistake, have taken care of it, and paid Franklin County,” Petri said.

Brown will no longer accept the owner-occupancy credit on the Columbus property, according to his campaign. Jennifer Lockrey, a spokesperson for the Franklin County auditor, confirmed that the credit has been removed. The county's treasurer, Cheryl Brooks Sullivan, confirmed that a $616 payment was made Tuesday.

Lockrey noted that sometimes such errors are attributable to paperwork done by title companies.

"It’s not an unusual occurrence for owners of more than one property," Lockrey said.

The tax issues come to light as Brown, who chairs the Senate’s Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee, prepares for a tough re-election bid in 2024. And they echo stories that have dogged his past campaigns. In 2012, The Plain Dealer of Cleveland reported on tax delinquencies involving a condo Brown owned in Washington, D.C.

“I misplaced the bill and I paid it as soon as I found out,” Brown said at the time, according to the newspaper. “I paid a penalty for being late, and it won’t happen again.”

Menendez Investigation Is Said to Involve Questions About Luxury Gifts
Senator Robert Menendez, Democrat of New Jersey, has said he is confident the inquiry will “end up in absolutely nothing.”

Federal prosecutors and the F.B.I. are investigating whether Senator Robert Menendez or his wife received unreported gifts of a luxury car and an apartment in Washington from a halal meat company that is also the focus of a criminal inquiry, two people with knowledge of the matter said on Thursday.

The investigation into Mr. Menendez, a Democrat who is the senior senator from New Jersey, is linked to a government search of the meat company’s offices and the home of its president, according to a lawyer who met with prosecutors.

The search followed the Egyptian government’s decision in 2019 to make the company, IS EG Halal of Edgewater, N.J., the sole authorized importer of halal meat into the country from anywhere in the world. The U.S. Department of Agriculture warned that the abrupt change could drive meat prices for Egypt’s 90 million Muslims higher and disrupt the market.

Mr. Menendez, the chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, has said that he was willing to assist investigators and a spokesman has maintained that the senator is confident the inquiry “will be successfully closed.”

DALLAS (CBSNewsTexas.com) -- Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson is becoming a Republican, he announced in a Wall Street Journal article appearing on an Op-Ed page Friday morning. Johnson is in his second and final term as mayor, after receiving more than 98% of the vote in his reelection campaign last year.

Before becoming mayor in 2019, Johnson served five terms in the Texas House of Representatives as a Democrat, representing a district that includes South Dallas and parts of Oak Cliff and Pleasant Grove.

In the op-ed, Johnson argues that cities benefit from law and order and fiscal conservatism, which he says Democratic mayors in other major cities are overlooking.

Sen. John Fetterman (D-Penn.) called for Sen. Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) to resign from the Senate on Saturday, making him the first senator to call for his resignation.

“Senator Menendez should resign,” Fetterman said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter. “He’s entitled to the presumption of innocence, but he cannot continue to wield influence over national policy, especially given the serious and specific nature of the allegations.”

Yeah right. With Santos still serving? And tfg under four separate indictments? And we’re going to go after Menendez to resign? They’re all criminals anyway.

To be fair, that's the argument that some drag out to wave away prosecuting. I think we ought not use it and thereby give it respect.

Menendez needs to go. Franken's fall was justified and swift. Menendez's needs to be just as swift. The public needs to see the difference between the D's and the R's.

He may be facing bribery charges and calls for his resignation from more than half of his Senate Democratic colleagues. But donors can still hit the links and dine with Sen. Bob Menendez at a luxurious beachside hotel – for a price.

A political action committee tied to Menendez is hosting donors in two weeks for an evening reception with the senator and his chief of staff at the Ritz-Carlton hotel at Dorado Beach in Puerto Rico – a move likely to prompt Democratic fears that the embattled senator will try to hang onto his seat despite his criminal charges.

On Thursday, just as Menendez went behind closed doors to inform Senate Democrats he would not resign and proclaimed his innocence, a representative with the New Jersey Democrat’s leadership PAC wrote to donors that the event was still on, according to a copy of the invitation obtained by CNN.

The message confirmed that the mid-October retreat, hosted by the New Millennium PAC, was still happening “in light of recent events.”

As part of the two-day event: A Friday evening welcome reception with Menendez at the Ritz, followed by a Saturday morning golf outing with the senator on the East Course, a championship-level course with views of the ocean and lush greens and fairways. There’s lunch with the senator’s chief of staff that day followed by a farewell reception with the senator in the evening.

He and Santos should take it on tour. They'd make quite the burlesque show, Menendenz as the barker and Kitara Ravache as the entertainment.
