I agree. I would love to see a federal law saying that a primary election for any national office (House, Senate, Pres, VPres) could not be held more than 90 days before the general election. We should have a single, national primary day. I'm waiting for some state to declare their primary for the 2028 election to be the day after the the 2024 election.

Actually, I'd like to see primaries eliminated.

Furthermore, the FEC should not accept declarations of candidacy more than 12 months before the general election. Maybe 6 months.

These two measures might also reduce the amount of money in elections. One of the reasons so much money is needed is that the election cycle is so damn long. Shorten the cycle, less money is needed. It wouldn't solve the problem completely, but I think it would help.

What peer group? In ability to lie with a straight face and willingness to do so, he has no peers.

He reminds me of the character that Jon Lovitz used to do on SNL, who was a pathalogical liar.

I've always wondered about whether this is so and if so, why. One would think that the parties *could* prevent people from running on their ticket. What am I missing about why they can't or don't?

Illinois Republicans botched four opportunities to stop an avowed Nazi from representing their party in a Chicago-area congressional district. Now they’re paying the price.
I guess it still doesn't explain how the party could not stand up and say "He's not a Republican candidate and can't run with our label." Aren't the parties supposed to be private organizations? Wasn't that the whole logic behind even allowing them to set the rules for primaries because they are not the government and not bound by certain constraints on timing?

But DEMOCRACY!!!

Where I come from there are no "primaries." The candidate is decided by a knife fighting contest internally, and then you get to vote for the candidate that's handed to you by the party. Take it or leave it.

This method has its flaws, pretty big flaws, but I think its better than the primary system you use.

George Santos Says He Helped the Rich Make Deals. Financial Pros Are Skeptical.

Executives who work in the ultrahigh-net-worth and family office markets say the consulting company owned by George Santos would face significant challenges to realize the kind of deal-making success the Republican representative-elect has reported.

Santos, 34, arrived in Washington this week to be sworn in as the representative of a New York congressional district covering parts of Queens and Long Island. But he will begin his term amid a growing scandal after news organizations revealed that Santos falsified parts of his...

George Santos appears to flash white power symbol in House Chambers

As if George Santos hadn’t been dealing with enough scrutiny, the congressman-elect appeared to flash a white power symbol in the House Chambers Thursday.

The Long Island liar unfolded his arms to reveal his left hand making a sideways “OK gesture,” a symbol co-opted by white supremacists, while casting his 10th vote for Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) for House Speaker.

In the penultimate moment of Speaker Vote 15, George was sitting next to Matt Gaetz (and Bobo). At the end when they stood up, George patted Matt's strong manly chest several times. :towel:

I find it delicious that Santos has immediately found his own water level: Boebert, Gaetz, MTQ. It reflects so very...poorly...on them.

Or rather it reveals them for exactly who they are.

As Rickie Lee Jones said, 🎶 They didn’t get any of that bread by being slow in the head 🎶 - so how did such a wealthy district fall for all that shit?

It's possible -- indeed, likely -- that they simply didn't care.

I'd look at voter turnout stats. He may have gotten a majority of a minority because of apathy.

FLASH: Federal Election Commission complaint filed against Rep George Santos (R-NY) in his first week in office

Questions are raised about payments for an apartment, about an “astounding” number of $199.99 campaign expenses (just below $200 reporting threshold)… and whether a foreign influence was part of effort

Any cash transactions made at any financial institution, including banks and casinos, of more than $10,000 per day, must be reported to federal authorities. Such transactions are not illegal, but must be reported. They also must report patterns of transactions, such as withdrawing $9,999 in cash for several days in a row. Its called "structuring" and that IS illegal, if it can be shown that the transactions were done to avoid the $10k reporting threshold.

The FEC needs a rule like that.
