Going over Jim Croce's "Operator"

I love big band music and Irish folk tunes, which, contrary to my kids' opinion, were not new when I was a young'un.

I totally see that young uns can sometimes connect with older generations of music. One of my friends has 3 kids (all now grown). The youngest kid was very into 60s and 50s music-- none of the then current stuff (late 80s and 90s). Maybe he was just an aberration.

My 10yo busted out singing Aerosmith’s Dream On this weekend. Not the first time something like that has happened. They sneak old songs in on his YouTube videos, video games, and at school sometimes. We’ve started actively trying to encourage this by listening to the Beatles station in the car and whatnot.

I play music. When Maybeson 1.0 was 19 (born in 1980) he said, “OMG I just heard this awesome song you ought to learn on the guitar. It’s by a group called Pink Floyd, or something like that. And it’s called wish you were here.”

“Oh,” I said. “You mean this?”

That is a gorgeous song on the guitar, though. Kids got decent taste

I am a firm believer that each generation should have its own music.

And it's good to know the music of other generations and times, too also.

I still like the music of my generation.

People try to put us down, just because we get around.

Sorry if ive told this before but... talking about younger generations appreciating a previous generations music always reminds me of my own blunder in 6th grade (mid-70s.) Some kids were talking about the Beatles and how great they were, when I piped up and informed them I didn't see what the big deal was, they just sounded like a cheap imitation of Paul McCartney and Wings to me.

Mr. Gray once was watching something that used Bob Dylan's "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" and couldn't understand why they had to go and remake it since the original version by Guns 'n' Rose's was so much better.

A kid in an 18th Century German school hears a song O Jesulein Süß, O Jesulein Mild by Samuel Scheidt (baptised 3 November 1587 – 24 March 1654), and complains it is just a cheap knockoff of O Jesulein Süß, O Jesulein Mild by Johann Sebastian Bach (31 March [O.S. 21 March] 1685 – 28 July 1750).

Back in 1975, when I was dating my wife, the movie Tommy had just been released. My girlfriend/wife's younger brother would not believe me that Elton John had not written the song "Pinball Wizard" and the other music in the movie. I don't remember if he had ever even heard of The Who.

In the 60s, my mom would sometimes hear the music that was on the radio in my room, or she would let me select the station on the car radio. It was amazing to me that some of the contemporary songs that were popular she already knew because they were from the 30s or 40s. She'd start singing the lyrics along with the artists. I didn't know that "Sloop John B" or "Heart and Soul" had been recorded decades earlier by others. Only the arrangements were different.

My dad, on the other hand, only listened to sports on the radio. Or Perry Como.

My mother-in-law was one who was always up on any generation of music her kids went through. She knew whatever was popular, no matter when.

My own favorite has always been big band music from the 30-40s. Not my generation, but still the best for me. Glenn Miller , but others, too.

My son was exposed to Andres Segovia and Frank Zappa at an early age. I'm pleased he's stuck with the good stuff.

Firstborn Son was born in '81, but loved rock since the age of 1. His favorite performer was Paul Simon. He had a Paul Simon album with "Love Me Like Rock" on it. That's the song he chose for our mother- son dance at his wedding.

The day Carrie Fisher married Paul Simon was a major day in his young life. He loved Star Wars which he pronounced "Dar Doors". Princess Leia marrying Paul Simon was fabulous!

We are the ones who must watch while you entertain.

Yes, it was. Carrie Fisher had mental health problems which were undiagnosed at the time. She was abandoned by her father when he left her mother, Debbie Reynolds, for Elizabeth Taylor when Taylor was widowed.
