Leaked audio reveals Councilmember Nury Martinez making racist comments, Mike Bonin calls for her removal

According to the [Los Angeles] Times, Martinez along with Councilmembers Gil Cedillo, Kevin de León, and L.A. County Federation of Labor President Ron Herrera were present on the call where they also discussed Councilman Mark Ridley-Thomas who had been indicted on charges of federal corruption.

The Times reviewed the recording and reported that Martinez allegedly referred to Bonin's son who is Black as "ese changuito," which translates from Spanish to English as "that little monkey."

The Times also reported that Martinez appeared to also discuss Bonin's child's behavior during a parade. The parade as referenced appears to have occurred around 2017. She allegedly said on the call, "[t]hey're raising him like a little white kid. I was like, this kid needs a beatdown. Let me take him around the corner and then I'll bring him back."

Since the Times' report dropped, both Martinez and de León have received criticism from Los Angeles political and legal leaders.

Oooohhhhh.....I could FILL this thread with the antics of our local council. From calling each other numbnuts to accusing the mayor of being a drug dealer to almost coming to blows at council meetings. The mayor has sued the council, the council has sued the mayor, the mayor lost one suit and appealed, he's fixing to lose another one and the city council caved on a $4.8 million contract so we can have garbage pickup next week. It's a goat circus with balloons.

The board of supervisors is even worse. They have each other escorted out of meetings by the sheriff's officers and threaten each other with ass whoopings. Never a dull day in local politics.

L.A. City Council's Kevin de León says he won't resign

Los Angeles Councilmember Kevin de León will not resign despite the fallout of leaked audio in which he and two other councilmembers made racist remarks, he told Univision in an interview broadcast Wednesday night.

The big picture: De León and councilmember Gil Cedillo have resisted calls to step down from President Biden and others for participating in a discussion with anti-Black and anti-Indigenous comments, particularly after former council president Nury Martinez resigned last week.

De León and Cedillo have both apologized and were removed from their committee chairmanships and assignments last week.

"No, I will not resign, because there is a lot of work ahead," he said. "There’s a lot of work in trying to handle the crises that are taking place in the district: the [COVID-19] infections, unemployment, the threat of evictions and the humanitarian crisis of homelessness."

LA police investigating if racist recording of city council members was taped illegally

The uproar began with the release nearly two weeks ago of a previously unknown recording of a 2021 private meeting involving Martinez and Councilmen Kevin de León and Gil Cedillo, *

“The department has initiated a criminal investigation into an allegation of eavesdropping,” Los Angeles Police Chief Michel Moore said Tuesday during a media availability in response to a question from The Associated Press.

The group, all Latino Democrats, was captured on the recording scheming to protect their political clout in the redrawing of council districts during an hourlong, closed-door meeting that was laced with bigoted comments. They used racist language to mock colleagues — as well as one councilman's young Black son — while they planned to protect Latino political strength in council districts.

It’s not known who made the tape, or why.

Under California law, all parties must consent to the recording of a private conversation or phone call. Otherwise, the person who made the recording could face criminal and civil penalties. The state's wiretapping statutes are among the strongest in the nation and allow the “injured party” — the person being recorded without their permission — to sue.
*The meeting was held in the federation offices.

Example:

My boss for a while, when I was the customer service manager for a small software company in 2001 or so, had a recording he made of his wife and her (female) lover in which they outright plotted to murder him during the course of the divorce proceedings. He was unable to use the recording for any purpose during the divorce, and he damned near got charged criminally for his trouble. Of course, the two ladies were not in any kind of trouble. It was an illegal recording!

See, that just doesn't seem right. I mean, I get why it happened because of how the law was written, but you'd think they'd have thought to leave an exception in the law that would make tapes plotting a crime at least admissible against the plotters, even if the person who recorded it would still get in trouble.

Hamilton County — who again has the highest number of veterans in the region — has a total of six people in its Veterans Service Office.
