Is anyone else having trouble logging into twitter? It kept telling me my password was wrong. Worried I'd been hacked, I changed my password after having a code emailed to me. It said the password change was successful but it still won't let me in, now saying there's unusual activity on my account.

I've been temporarily banned before and twitter send me an email to tell me so I don't think it's that.

Not for me. I'm still getting this message, no matter how many times I enter my user name.
There was unusual login activity on your account. To help keep your account safe, please enter your phone number or username to verify it’s you.
And that's after I updated my password, which it confirmed I changed. I may have to start from scratch.

Hang on a bit longer. The outages went back up around noon but are going back down now. At least they appear to working on it.

Xinjiang: Twitter closes thousands of China state-linked accounts spreading propaganda
Content was often ‘embarrassingly’ produced and pumped out via repurposed accounts, analysts say

Helen Davidson

Twitter has shut down thousands of state-linked accounts in China that seek to counter evidence of human rights abuses in Xinjiang, as part of what experts called an “embarrassingly” produced propaganda operation.

The operations used photos and images, shell and potentially automated accounts, and fake Uyghur profiles, to disseminate state propaganda and fake testimonials about their happy lives in the region, seeking to dispel evidence of a years-long campaign of oppression, with mass internments, re-education programs, and allegations of forced labour and sterilisation.

The networks were found to share themes and content, but often used repurposed accounts dedicated to pornography or Korean soap operas with little engagement except when they were amplified by Chinese diplomats and officials. Twitter is banned inside China but officials frequently operate accounts overseas.

According to analysts at thinktank the Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI), the content from the 2,160 accounts that Twitter closed down was often “embarrassingly” produced but provided a level of “implausible deniability” which muddied the waters around the issue.

The accounts linked to Chinese operations were in two sets, the largest being a network of 2,048 accounts amplifying the Chinese Communist party’s narratives related to Xinjiang, and the second set of 112 accounts connected to “Changyu Culture,” a private company that ASPI said appeared to be contracted by the Xinjiang regional authority to create videos of Uyghurs supporting the government.

Elon Musk is now the largest Twitter shareholder, setting up a showdown
His 9.2 percent stake in the company sets up a confrontation with advocates for restricting harmful accounts

By Elizabeth Dwoskin, Faiz Siddiqui and Taylor Telford
Yesterday at 8:33 a.m. EDT|Updated today at 10:45 p.m. EDT

SAN FRANCISCO — Elon Musk became the largest shareholder of Twitter on Monday, setting the platform up for a potential political showdown over its efforts to limit harmful content, efforts the firebrand Tesla chief executive has indicated that he sees hastening a turn toward censorship.

His surprise investment, which comes days after questioning the company’s commitment to free speech and suggesting he might start his own social platform, sent Twitter stock soaring. While it was not immediately clear what role Musk plans to play, analysts speculated he may try for an activist restructuring that could change the way Twitter polices its platform as well as who it banishes.

Some inside Twitter worry Musk may push Twitter in a libertarian direction, away from blocking or restricting accounts that cause social harm, according to people familiar with internal conversations who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe sensitive matters.

Just days after Twitter banned former president Donald Trump in the wake of the Capitol insurrection, Musk wrote on Twitter that “a lot of people are going to be super unhappy with West Coast high tech as the de facto arbiter of free speech.”

Some Twitter employees and experts fear Musk’s involvement could also push the company further into chaos after years of investor activism and the sudden departure of former chief executive Jack Dorsey. The company is already at a critical juncture ahead of the 2022 midterm elections that will determine control of Congress, when it will have to police related misinformation that could help sway votes.

Musk has a 9.2 percent stake in the social media company, which was disclosed in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing and sent shares up 27 percent. His stake, worth nearly $2.9 billion based on the closing price of Twitter on Monday, now dwarfs that of Dorsey, who owns a 2.3 percent stake. Musk tweeted, “Oh hi lol,” greeting users of the social media app where he makes many of his most erratic pronouncements, including news about Tesla, where he heads the company. Musk seemed to realize the potential of his influence almost immediately. By Monday evening, he launched a Twitter poll asking users whether they would like an edit button — a longtime bone of contention among users and the app’s leadership.

Just a quick reminder about who the people are who are happy about Musk gaining influence with Twitter. Musk is a bad dude. This is a bad thing.

Remember when Musk called Senator Elizabeth Warren "Senator Karen" for suggesting that he should pay some income taxes? Good times.
